  Camp is fun, and...

(0 April 2018) SCSoccer_Hi5s.jpgNo envy now, well just a little perhaps...  Your kids will have a wonderful camp experience and you have the joy of giving!

Whether in the back yard, an overnight camp or day camp, camping is a wonderful adventure we can give our children.

When we look at the variety of camps and summer classes we think fondly of the summers of our youth and just a little wistfully wish we were kids once more. It's  time to start filling out those registration forms and signing up for swim lessons.

Camp is about experiencing something new, creating memories and making new friends. Most day camps are offered on a weekly basis and some offer a daily rate. Many offer scholarships. Children as young as 3 can enjoy half day and full day programs and teens can find day, overnight camps, counselor in training (CIT) programs.

(2 Buttons) Button_A-ZSummerCamps.jpgFor ALL CAMPS in our county go online to our A-Z SUMMER CAMP DIRECTORY to find detailed descriptions and contact information.

If you know of a camp we have missed, let us know! Click on the camp ads below to reach their websites and you will be delighted with the quality programs available.

Enjoy a little family camping too.  Start with the backyard or our local state parks. Be sure to celebrate The Great American Campout in June in your own backyard!

We added more festivals and summer fun!

Have fun planning a great summer! Parmalee

Because of Camp

Camp provides children with the opportunity to connect with nature, to participate in human powered activities, and to benefit from personal and primary relationships. Because of Camp...® so much is possible.

At camp, when children make new friends, explore the world around them, and learn that "I can" is much more powerful than "I can't", magic happens. In an environment created just for them, children learn real life skills, develop self-esteem, and gain a sense of independence and community. Whether children are playing, exploring nature, conquering new heights, or becoming part of a camp family, they are creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Happy Campers Protect Wildlife

The National Wildlife Federation's Great American Campout is a summer-long celebration of camping as a way to connect with nature and wildlife.

Take the pledge to camp-in your backyard, your neighborhood, your local parks, state parks, and national parks, cabins, RVs, treehouses ... you name it!-and be a part of our nationwide event! Everyone should get outside at least once this summer and connect with nature and wildlife. The body, mind, and spirit benefits from outdoor play are well-documented and numerous and create a lasting connection to nature and wildlife that will help you have a happier, healthier family. It's a fact: nature makes you nicer.

National Wildlife Federation's Great American Campout is also part of Great Outdoors Month® in June, a month designated to highlight the many kinds of outdoor activities that strengthen our bonds with nature. The National Wildlife Federation celebrates everyone who's getting outdoors and camping on Great American Campout day on June 23rd-and we encourage you to re-live the camping experience all summer long.

(0 April 2018) Jill_RunningChildren.jpgChoosing the Best Summer Camp For Your Overweight or Obese Child

by Jill Troderman, NC, March 2018

Summer is supposed to be a fun time of year for kids. But for children who are heavy, overweight and obese it is often the most dreaded time of year. Swimming, climbing, and running around can be embarrassing for children carrying extra weight on their bodies. Even eating in-group settings may be awkward for them if they feel that they are labeled and judged for being the "fat" kid at the table. Because, unfortunately many kids with overweight/obesity have shame and negative self-images around self image.

Still true, overweight and obesity is a serious health condition that is way more complicated than how a person feels about their physical appearances. Let's face it. Overweight and obesity in children is higher than it has ever been in history with 1:3 kids suffering with weight issues.

According to Wellspring Camps, Health and Wellness Camps for Children, Teens, Young Adults, and Families, "Overweight children are likely to become more and more overweight, and that nearly 90% of overweight teens will become obese adults."

The good news is, summer can be the absolute perfect time to jump start a fun and effective health program that focuses on achieve a healthy weight with the goal of long term success with a positive self esteem that proves to be effective in long term health. Continue reading>>>

Child Protection Improvements Act Becomes Law

March 26, 2018

On Friday, March 23, President Trump signed the omnibus spending package, which included provisions for the Child Protection Improvements Act (CPIA). The new law enables organizations serving vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities to conduct fast, accurate, and affordable FBI background checks on prospective volunteers and employees. Currently, more than one-third of states do not have access to FBI background checks. Read more>>>

continued.. Camps, Summer and Weight Challenges

Parents may wonder if a "weight loss or fat camp" is a good fit for their kid over summer, or would a "regular camp" be better?

Let's be clear right here. We are not condoning the outdated fat camp model. Those do not work.

(0 April 2018) Jill_EatingAppleandCarrot.jpgBetter choices are health and wellness focused summer camps that immerse the child into a traditional style camp with all the campy stuff like horse back riding, swimming, climbing, arts and crafts, sports, games plus added gems of offering cooking classes, nutrition education, and support from skilled experts and wellness professionals. Often these camps have a medical or clinical element to foster proper weight loss with guided supervision.

Kids that are overweight or obese may be more comfortable being around others dealing with a common struggle. A study published in the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity shows that children between the ages of 9 and 18 that attend weight loss camps "suggests improvement in body image and self-esteem as well. "

Most of all, kids attending summer sleep away camps had marked improvement in self-esteem, a reduction in body fat as measured by BMI, and ultimately found out a way to live a better quality of life.

What you want your child to get out of a weight loss camp

Health focused camps will promote emotional and behavioral skills, mindfulness techniques, positive social interactions, positive body image and a healthy relationship to healthy foods and eating.

Avoid camps with strict dieting, calorie goals or limits, or food deprivation. Those strategies are ineffective and are not sustainable ways to live or view eating and diet.

All kids deserve to have a great summer where they can relax, have fun, meet new friends, be active, and healthy. So choose a camp that looks inspiring and has a program that supports gradual weight loss goals, offers quality food, and has a good reputation that you and your child will feel great about.

Weight Loss Camps:

  • Camp Pocono Trails
  • Wellsprings - California, Wisconsin & Florida
  • Camp Pennbrook for Girls - Pennsylvania
