(A Buttons) Button_Weekend.jpgThis is one of those weekends there are more events than we can fit into the newsletter so be sure to also click on "The Weekend".

Let's catch up with the spirit of last week's Constitution Day and check in with our amazing, flexible, powerful document which puts "we the people" in charge of our government, not kings, dictators or the"political" professionals in charge of us.

A presidential race year is a good time to renew our knowledge of the constitution plus a little history about its birth, and it needn't be boring! If the political climate then in any way resembled today's raucus discourse, it's a miracle a consensus was reached! "The U.S. Constitution was written in 1787 by a group of 55 men with one purpose and many different personalities." (No time to waste complaining that it was all men working on it, as that was the cultural norm then.)  The beauty of our constitution is its provisions for peaceful change as our culture and mores evolve.  In the late 1700's no other nation had created a governing document that placed power in the hands of the people.  Bone up on the constitution and its history and then ask the children what they know about it.

Remember those days of finding someone to sit with in the lunchroom? Now we ache for our children. It's hard navigating the tween and teen years especially if you're not one of the "cool" kids.  A teen has developed an app that helps students find lunch buddies with a side benefit of decreasing bullying. This is beautiful!

You decided to keep our child out of preschool for now but you are seeing changes and wondering if he'/he might benefit from two or three (or more eventually).  The Children's Cottage in Aptos has recently changed from a preschool/daycare program to a classic Montessori preschool, so now has a few openings.  Director Judy McMillan welcomes your visit.

(A Buttons) Button_Weekend.jpgPlease recommend our newsletter to new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events! We cannot fit them all into this newsletter.  There are more on the online calendar.

Enjoy your weekend with the family! Parmalee

On this site, constitutional experts interact with each other to explore the Constitution's history and what it means today. For each provision of the Constitution, scholars of different perspectives discuss what they agree upon, and what they disagree about. These experts were selected with the guidance of leaders of two prominent constitutional law organizations-The American Constitution Society and The Federalist Society. This project is sponsored by a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

Christine: Sleep and Repetition Help Learning

Sleep learning is a very popular learning technique. Many students will go to bed and set audio so they can learn over night. That technique doesn't have much proof but sleeping after learning does seem to help long-term recall.

Studies have shown that sleeping after learning helps data retention. Data repetition also helps learning. A new study steps into the discussion.  This study combined both techniques to see if using both would make a difference.

Adults were given French-Swahili word pairs to learn. They worked in two sessions, 12 hours apart. One group had a morning and evening session. Another group had an evening and morning session. The group that slept in-between sessions had significantly better retention and a shorter re-learning time. They were re-tested after a week and 6 months later. In all cases, the group who had a sleep session between repetitive learning sessions remembered more groups and re-learned the groups faster.

This study seems to indicate that interleaving multiple study sessions with sleep sessions will be better for tests. I wish I had known this in college. .

  Sit With Us

by Elyse Wanshel Associate Editor, Good News, The Huffington Post

(A A Sep 16) SitWithUs.jpg"Sit With Us" helps students who have difficulty finding a place to sit locate a welcoming group in the lunchroom.

The app allows students to designate themselves as "ambassadors," thereby inviting others to join them. Ambassadors can then post "open lunch" events, which signal to anyone seeking company that they're invited to join the ambassadors' table.

Natalie Hampton, a 16-year-old from Sherman Oaks, California, is the designer of Sit With Us, which launched on September 9. She was inspired to create it after she ate alone her entire seventh grade year, she told LA Daily News. The situation left Hampton feeling vulnerable and made her a target for bullying.

Hampton, now a junior, is attending a different school and is thriving (A A Sep 16) SitWithUs_Natalie2.jpgsocially. Yet, the memory of sitting alone and being bullied still haunts her, especially since she knows her experience isn't an isolated one.

Hampton told Audie Cornish on NPR's "All Things Considered" that the reason why she felt an app like this was necessary is because it prevents kids from being publicly rejected and being considered social outcasts by their peers.

This way it's very private. It's through the phone. No one else has to know Natalie Hampton on the app

"This way it's very private. It's through the phone. No one else has to know," she explained to Cornish. "And you know that you're not going to be rejected once you get to the table."

Hampton might be on to something even more, especially since she's asking fellow students to take the stand against bullying."
