If the following excerpt from an article by Paul Tough in the NY Times September 14, 2011 intrigues you....

(Graphics) KeytoSuccess.jpg"...This push on tests," he told me, "is missing out on some serious parts of what it means to be a successful human."

The most critical missing piece, Randolph explained as we sat in his office last fall, is character - those essential traits of mind and habit that were drilled into him at boarding school in England and that also have deep roots in American history. "Whether it's the pioneer in the Conestoga wagon or someone coming here in the 1920s from southern Italy, there was this idea in America that if you worked hard and you showed real grit, that you could be successful," he said. "Strangely, we've now forgotten that. People who have an easy time of things, who get 800s on their SAT's, I worry that those people get feedback that everything they're doing is great. And I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure. When that person suddenly has to face up to a difficult moment, then I think they're screwed, to be honest. I don't think they've grown the capacities to be able to handle that."

Writing - Therapy for the Soul, Help from Pros and Contests

It seems that just writing about writing a few newsletters ago spawned writing workshops, but in reality these excellent writing workshops have been a while in the planning.  Perhaps one of them is for you!

(Logos Event Calendar) PacificChildrensWritersWorkshop_SantaCruzParent.jpgThe annual TEENSPEAK NOVEL WORKSHOP (October 7-9) is a national, inter-generational event that unites top-level New York editors and agents with literary-minded teens, in lively dialogue with adults aiming to publish their first or subsequent novels for teen readers.

TeenSpeak's "parent" program, the Pacific Coast Children's Writers Workshop (established 2003), has received recognition from UCSC Literature Department as well as publishing professionals. A high school alum writes of the event: "Adults cared what I thought about their characters, dialogue, and plot lines. My opinion was valued...I was a sample of the audience that adults hoped to attract with their stories."

We will offer a FULL SCHOLARSHIP to one motivated teen in exchange for an adult relative's work as resident chaperone and director's assistant. This scholarship-tuition, beachfront lodging, most meals, optional faculty feedback on a student's fiction or personal essay-covers the standard $499 registration fee. For a job description and enrollment details, CONTACT Director Nancy Sondel through the website (use the contact form). Light prep recommended. Limited teen openings remain.  DEADLINE to apply: September 19, or until filled!

(Photos General) AmyWirth_SantaCruzParent.jpgAmy Blogs: The Post I Don't Want to Write

I've started this post four times and can't seem to get it written, or get it right. Either I, or a sneaky Boo, accidentally published a few errant sentences last week that slipped from my fingers a few weeks ago. I've written snippets here and there on Google Plus, in Facebook messages to friends, and on replies to other people's problems on message boards. What I haven't done is write about Bean's diagnosis here - it's all still in my head.

The biggest surprise about her "official-after-way-too-much-money-reams-of-forms-and-six-hours-of-testing" diagnosis is that there is a diagnosis.

In that secret place inside my head, way more secret than a Facebook status or the confines of this blog, I really thought the nice neuropsychologist would tell us that Bean is just brilliant and that gifted is not a diagnosis.

This is not what she said. Not by a long shot.

It's September 11th, 2011. Ten years ago we, as a country, were under attack. When it started, we didn't know who or why or what the end result would be. On that day, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. This number doesn't include the hijackers, the heart attack sufferers, the miscarried or those who have died since, as a result of injuries or toxic dust that they encountered that day. ... continued
