  Celebrate Labor Day

(Photos General) Sand-Castle_2014.jpgWe celebrate Labor Day honoring all who labor with relaxing times with the family and choosing a few entertaining weekend events. Friday we can jumpstart the weekend with a free concert at the beach with Papa Doo Run Run or listen to 150 enthusiastic Valley of the Moon fiddlers in a lively celebration of music, song, and dance at the Civic. Four days of activities at the Capitola Begonia Festival are perfect for families, including the Saturday sandcastle building contest. Our local park rangers have prepared many special activities for us.  On Monday splashers and swimmers can spring for the free swim day at Simpkins!

Please recommend our newsletter to new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events! We cannot fit them all into this newsletter.  There are more on the online calendar.

Enjoy your weekend with the family! Parmalee

  Preschool: We Get to Choose!

(A Aug) CarynKitty.jpgAre you "home pre-schooling" or looking for a program that helps your child transition from home to preschool?  We have LOTS of choicesHere are articles offering food for thought.  We suggest visits to local preschools that interest you.  Use your head and heart to make choices best for your unique child and family values.

Preschool Without Walls by Lillian Mongeau

Three-year-old Desi Sorrelgreen's favorite thing about his preschool is "running up hills." His classmate Stelyn Carter, 5, likes to "be quiet and listen to birds - crows, owls and chickadees," as she put it. And for Joshua Doctorow, 4, the best part of preschool just may be the hat he loves to wear to class (black and fuzzy, with flaps that come down over his ears). continued>>>>

German Kindergarten Campouts Test Helicopter Parents by Jessica Holzer

Tilda Geyer got away from her parents on a trip to a lake last summer. She and 10 friends slept in tents, rode horses, picked berries and flew on a rope swing over the water. At night, they sang around a campfire. Tilda was just 4 years old. The campout was for kindergarten. German kindergartens aren't for crybabies. While U.S. preschoolers practice their ABCs, their counterparts in German kindergarten, age 3 to 6, head into the outdoors to learn to get dressed, prepare meals and go to bed-all without their parents. continued>>>>

If Academics-Focused Preschool Is "Crushing Our Kids," What's the Alternative? by Laura Moser

The education world exploded this weekend with the Atlantic's publication of Erika Christakis' "The New Preschool Is Crushing Kids," adapted from the early-childhood expert's soon-to-be published book The Importance of Being Little: What Preschoolers Really Need From Grownups. Christakis' article describes a recently (and radically) altered society where, instead of staying home with mom, "[n]early three-quarters of American 4-year-olds are now in some kind of nonfamily care." And instead of discussing the sound of crunching leaves and exploring the texture of sand, these young kids are bombarded by what Christakis describes in the opening paragraph as: a print-rich environment, every surface festooned with alphabet charts, bar graphs, word walls, instructional posters, classroom rules, calendars, schedules, and motivational platitudes-few of which a 4-year-old can "decode," the contemporary word for what used to be known as reading. continued>>>>

What and HowKids Learn in Preschool  PBS Grade by Grade Learning

The Basics
In preschool, children learn about the world through play. Subject areas aren't separate in their minds or in the classroom. The objects preschoolers find on a nature walk, like feathers, rocks and leaves, might help them figure out math concepts like "big, bigger, and biggest" or motivate them to visit the book corner to find out more about birds. Teachers may introduce children to basic concepts such as shapes, letters, and colors, but preschool is about learning much more than what a circle looks like. It's where children first develop a relationship with learning. continued>>>>>
