  About Testing

(AAA Aug 2015) ConstitutionWethePeople.jpg

Today is Constitution Day!  Tonight's dinner conversation should be fun.  Ask the children what they know about our constitution because all schools that receive federal aid are mandated to discuss the constitution today.

Test scores for SC County schools came out (AAA Aug 2015) TestTaking.jpgtwo weeks ago.  As a group they weren't all that great, "Less than 50 percent of Santa Cruz County students met English and math standards in the state's newest test..."

An explanation given for the less than stellar scores was "...a move from a pen and paper test in the past to one that's digital and requires computer literacy... -a whole new test based on a whole new set of standards."  Serendipitously Annie Murphy Paul's recent two blogs discussed test taking, so I share with you, parents and teachers alike, some recent information on test taking.

Annie's research led me to some provocative articles on education.  I hope you will read and reflect on them and if one or more resonates with you, share with a friend, teacher or principal, not as a criticism, but in the spirit of questing for excellence, "I found this article interesting.  Are we doing this in our school?"

Reader comments are often as interesting and informative as author articles, especially when a teacher shares, "Glad a scientific study validated what I've been doing successfully for years."

(A Buttons) Button_Weekend.jpgThe fair is in full swing.  Children and adults throughout the county have entered all manner of contests.  Be sure to check the fair schedules so you don't miss a favorite entertainer.

Thank you for sending many new families our way. Please, drop us a line anytime and recommend our newsletter to a friend

Enjoy the weekend with your family, Parmalee

Annie: Improving students with every test

by Annie Murphy Paul

What if every test students take included an exercise intended to help them grow as learners and as people?

I've been thinking about this question ever since I read an academic paper published earlier this year, titled "Mind-Set Interventions Are a Scalable Treatment for Academic Underachievement." The research reported in this paper was conducted by a group at Stanford University called PERTS, which stands for Project for Education Research That Scales. PERTS conducts research on how students can become "more passionate, resilient, and successful learners," and then partners with schools and other organizations to bring this research to large numbers of young people.

In their most recent publication, the PERTS team, led by Dave Paunesku, evaluated the impact of two online modules they had designed. The modules were these: Read more>>>>

  Suki: The Joy of Blogging

(AAA_Feb 2015) Suki2015.jpg... One of the hardest things about writing is doing it when you don’t have any real reason to do it. That’s what a lot of “school writing” is like: you’re supposed to work hard on a piece of writing, but probably no one but your teacher is going to read it! It’s really fun and inspiring to have an audience, and a blog is an easy way to find an audience. Also, your blog might help other people get interested in what you like.

I started blogging in 2009 and quickly discovered I loved it! Here are some reasons to love blogging:
