(A A Oct 2016) Halloween_CarynJamesLinden.jpgNo wonder children love Halloween.  Imagining themselves as another character is a natural for children!  I hope their costumes are sturdy enough to last at least a month of play!

"Bring two pencils, a composition book and abundant, natural curiosity" to science classes with Irvin Lindsey.  Many of you recall that your children's excitement about science began with a series of science classes with Irvin.  Now Irvin, master science teacher, brings his active, hands-on physics, chemistry and life & earth sciences to Louden Nelson and the Boys and Girls Club of Live Oak.  In these classes your children will be imbued with essential concepts and higher level thinking skills through special activities.  Don't be envious.  They are sure to share their excitement and new knowledge around the dinner table.

(A A Oct 2016) Eric14LittleBoy.jpgFriday 3:30-8pm Must Do:  Go to the Fern Creek Garden Railroad Open House where you can see an entire front and backyard devoted to trains.  Talk with hosts Eric and Trevor about all things train.  Enjoy! Your family will not be disappointed.

  Book: The Sound of Silence

(A A Oct 2016) TheSoundofSilence.jpg"Do you have a favorite sound?" little Yoshio asks. The musician answers, "The most beautiful sound is the sound of ma, of silence."

But Yoshio lives in Tokyo, Japan: a giant, noisy, busy city. He hears shoes squishing through puddles, trains whooshing, cars beeping, and families laughing. Tokyo is like a symphony hall!

Where is silence?

Join Yoshio on his journey through the hustle and bustle of the city to find the most beautiful sound of all.  Read more>>>>

  Positive Discipline Tip: Listening Skills

Teacher & Parenting Tools: LISTENING SKILLS The Positive Discipline Association, which leads the national and international PD movement, is sending out Positive Discipline Tools every Monday now. And, there will be tools for both parents and teachers (app available too)!

PDCR is happy to share the Positive  Discipline Tool this week, "Listen". Children will listen to you AFTER they feel listened to.  Here are tips for improving your listening skills with children.
Listen for Parents Many parents complain that their children don't listen, yet few parents really listen to their children.

Parents tend to do the following:
React and Correct: Don't talk to me that way. Why can't you be more positive, grateful, or respectful? You shouldn't feel that way. Why can't you be different-more like your sister or brother?

Fix or Rescue: Maybe if you would do this ____, then____. (Maybe if you would be friendlier, then you would have more friends.) I'll talk to your teacher (or your friend's mother). Don't feel bad.
Full Parent Tool on Listening.

Listen for Teachers
We have heard students say that it doesn't do any good to talk because adults don't listen-they just lecture. Could this be true? And if so, why? We will make some guesses.
Most adults think it is their job to teach, and that the best way to teach is to lecture. Too often we don't notice that we are creating resistance instead of appreciation. Or, many of us don't listen because we are too busy defending or explaining our point of view.

  Suki: Looking Past the Thorns

Suki Wessling

(A A Oct 2016) SukiRose.jpgAll parents with adult children say it: Enjoy your kids, because they'll be gone before you know it.

All parents in the throes of diapers, tantrums, school choices, and the craziness of early teens think it: This will never end.

And then it does.

My older child is 17, and I can assure you that it's gone by in the blink of an eye. At the same time, it seemed to pass very, very slowly. But there's been an unexpected beauty as we move into our last school year with two kids at home: College applications.

Now you're thinking: She's really lost it. College applications? Beauty? All that stress of having teenagers has gotten to her.

Actually, I've found...Read the rest>>>>
