(Special Event Images / Graphics) RussianEducation.jpgI think this article has profound lessons for us both as parents and citizens of America.  It confirmed some concepts I've come to believe in over the years.  How about you?

by Clifford J. Levy, NY Times September 15, 2011

"The phone rang, and my stomach clenched when I heard her voice. "Daddy? I want to go home," said my 8-year-old daughter, Arden. Two hours earlier, I dropped Arden and her two siblings off at their new school in a squat building in a forest of Soviet-era apartment blocks on Krasnoarmeyskaya (Red Army) Street in Moscow. They hugged me goodbye, clinging a little too long, and as I rode the metro to my office, I said a kind of silent prayer to myself that they would get through the day without falling apart." continued>>>>

13th Annual Santa Cruz County Fall Bike to Work and School Day 2011

(Photos General) Biketoschool_boy.jpgThursday, October 6th

"Bike-to-Work strives to get you hooked on bicycling as transportation. Ecology Action provides incentives, free breakfasts, peer encouragement, and lots of great prizes. We believe that if you try replacing a car trip with bicycling you will experience the true merits of this self-propelled movement - exercise, fresh air, free parking, and none of the hassles of driving.

Congestion, Gridlock, and traffic jams continue to be a growing problem on Santa Cruz roadways. Bike-to-Work is an inexpensive, healthy, and fun means to alleviate gridlock and reduce air pollution." Ecology Action

* Stop by on one of the many breakfast sites on Thursday, October 6th from 6:30am - 9:30am to pick up a free delicious, healthy breakfast!

* Click on the "Breakfast Sites" to find the breakfast site that works for you.

  Children and Money

By Paul Richard, Executive Director - Institute of Consumer Financial Education

For Parents and Grandparents, "Money Skills Kit", 18 Ways To Teach Children or Grandchildren The Value of Money

Money gives people - both young and older - decision-making opportunities. Everyday spending decisions can have a far greater negative impact on your children's financial future (and yours also) than any investment decisions they (or you) may ever make. Educating, motivating and empowering your children to become regular savers and investors will enable them to keep more of the money they earn and do more with the money they keep!

1) As soon as children can count, introduce them to money. Take an active role because repetition and observing others are the two methods they learn by.

2) Communicate with children, as they grow, about your values concerning money and how to save it, make it grow, and most importantly how to spend it wisely.

3) Help children also learn the difference between needs, wants and wishes. This will prepare them for making good spending decisions in the future.

4) Set goals. Setting goals is a fundamental concept to help young people learn the value of money and also how to save. People, young or old, rarely hit targets they don't have. Nearly every toy or other item children ask their parents to get for them can become the object of a goal setting session. Benefits of saving to achieve the goal is an important aspect and provides built-in motivation. Goal setting for good grades, toys or savings, helps children learn to become responsible for their own futures.

  Restaurant Week october 5-12

Two of our sponsors are participating in Santa Restaurant Week in which area restaurants are offering special deals!  We thought it would be interesting to learn a little about the sometimes mysterious chef in the kitchen who makes it all happen!

Casablanca Inn & Bistro - Chef Job Carder Tyrolean  Restaurant - Chef Greg Magnussen
(Photos General) JobCarder.jpgJob Carder started his culinary career in a small Texas and Louisiana style barbecue house called Little Lou's in Santa Cruz, CA while still in college. He went on to work at a family owned Northern Italian restaurant called Bienvenuto Trattoria, where he gained a true understanding of the cuisine and of the different styles of regional Italian cooking.

He moved back to his hometown of Los Angeles, with the goal of honing his talents in classic and contemporary French cooking and set forth to continue his culinary training in some of the city's finest kitchens, spending over 5 years working his way up hierarchy of chef positions within the Patina Group restaurants and catering, honing his talents in every area of the professional kitchen from butchering to desserts.

When not in the kitchen, Carder enjoys most of all spending time with his children, Raine (7) and Ronin (5)-"I want to give them something they can be proud of the same way I am so proud of what my grandfather has done," says Carder.

Chef Greg Magnussen makes your Bavarian heart sing with his very popular Bavarian and German cooking at the Tyrolean Inn Restaurant in Ben Lomond CA. With the Tyrolean for over 20 years, Chef Greg had a fantastic learning experience at the Cliff house where the menu was eclectic -everything from Greek to Californian seafood to Chinese- before coming to the Tyrolean.

Beginning with hamburgers as a teenager, Greg learned from chefs at the Hollins House, the University Club in Los Gatos, the Miramar and Moonshadows. Along the way he has assembled a fabulous collection of cookbooks from around the world.

What does he do on his day off? You got it! He reads cookbooks and tries new recipes!

Welcome Back Monarchs Day - Oct. 9, 10-4

(Ads) WelcomeBackMonarchs_SantaCruzParent.jpg

Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, funded the repair of, and restored access to, the Boardwalk Trail at Natural Bridges State Beach. The boardwalk trail was closed due to severe damage that occurred during a storm last winter. The repaired boardwalk will be available for use by visitors at this year's annual "Welcome Back Monarchs Day" event which celebrates the annual return of Monarch Butterflies to Natural Bridges State Beach.

The theme of this year's event is "The Expressions & Impressions of Natural Bridges" and will feature a variety of family-friendly activities including live music, kids games, art and crafts, face-painting, an all-ages parade, nature walks, and local superheroes Monarch Man and Monarch Woman. Visitors can also learn about local natural history in the Visitor Center and support park educational programs by shopping in the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks ParkStore.

Food will be available for purchase, with proceeds to go directly to the Natural Bridges State Beach education program.

For more about Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, visit www.ThatsMyPark.org or call (831) 429-1840 x102.
