(2 Buttons) HalloweenEvents.jpgWe're full up with an amazing variety of Halloween and harvest events. I'm sure you can find a few age appropriate events for your children.  We didn't include most adult events as we figured you would be out with the children making sure they have a fun and safe Halloween. After looking over all the fun events, let us know if we missed a good one!

"My parents were not scientists. They knew almost nothing about science. But in introducing me simultaneously to skepticism and to wonder, they taught me the two uneasily cohabiting modes of thought that are central to the scientific method." -Carl Sagan

What a perfect balance for our young, and older, students? My father would read something from the paper at the dinner table and invite us to comment on it.  Often I would say "That's amazing!" whereas one of my brothers most likely would say, "How do you know that's true?" The years have brought us all a more balanced reaction to assertions, in fact nowadays I'm quite skeptical about who said/did what! So please demonstrate skepticism with your children, respectfully of course, because that way generates curiosity and participation.

STEM, STEAM, ART, MUSIC, DRAMA! GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, LITERATURE, ENGLISH, MATH, FOREIGN LANGUAGES et.al. I say ALL! You?

Please recommend our newsletter to new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always the many fun events! Check the online calendar.

Enjoy a fun weekend with family!  Parmalee

"The Fine Art of Baloney Detection"

(0 Oct 2017) BaloneyDetectionKit.jpgIn one chapter of his book, "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection," Sagan laid out his method, proposing what he called "A Baloney Detection Kit," a set of intellectual tools that scientists use to separate wishful thinking from genuine probability. Sagan presents the contents of his kit as "tools for skeptical thinking," which he defines as "the means to construct, and to understand, a reasoned argument and-especially important-to recognize a fallacious or fraudulent argument." You can see his list of all eight tools, slightly abridged, below. These are all in Sagan's words:

  • Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the "facts."
  • Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.
  • Arguments from authority carry little weight - "authorities" have made mistakes in the past. They will do so again in the future. Perhaps a better way to say it is that in science there are no authorities; at most, there are experts.
  • Spin more than one hypothesis. If there's something to be explained, think of all the different ways in which it could be explained. Then think of tests by which you might systematically disprove each of the alternatives.
  • Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours. It's only a way station in the pursuit of knowledge. Ask yourself why you like the idea. Compare it fairly with the alternatives. See if you can find reasons for rejecting it. If you don't, others will.
  • If there's a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) - not just most of them.
  • Occam's Razor. This convenient rule-of-thumb urges us when faced with two hypotheses that explain the data equally well to choose the simpler.
  • Always ask whether the hypothesis can be, at least in principle, falsified.... You must be able to check assertions out. Inveterate skeptics must be given the chance to follow your reasoning, to duplicate your experiments and see if they get the same result.

"Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There's not some trick involved with it. It's pure and it's real. And it moves and it heals and it communicates and does all these incredible things." - Tom Petty

How a British School Improved Its Math Scores without Teaching a Single Math Lesson More

by Robby Berman

Maybe it's just something about the way music exercises our brains, but its effect can be pretty amazing, as Feversham Primary Academy in Bradford, England has recently found. "We were in special measures," headmaster Naveed Indrees tells The Guardian. "We could have gone down the route where we said we need to get results up, we're going to do more English, more maths, more booster classes, but we didn't." Instead, they took a gamble: They added two hours a week of music for every student, and the results have been stunning. Read more>>>>

"Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness." Carl Sagan, from Demon-Haunted World (1995)

STEM Is Our New Religion, But It's Probably a False God

by Robby Berman

It's been a long time since students in the United States have come in anywhere near the top of international educational rankings -as of 2014, the U.S. ranks 14th against other countries in the quality of available education. Read more>>>>>

STEM vs. STEAM: Why The "A" Makes a Difference

By Edudemic Staff

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects are the focal point of popular integrated learning systems. However, voices are calling out for the "A" in "arts" to turn STEM into STEAM. What does the debate involve, and what do educators and students think about it? Read more>>>>

  Conscious Parenting Masterclass

Conscious Parenting Masterclass: Create Happy, Healthy and Successful Children while saving your sanity and having fun doing it!

Do you ever think about becoming more and more the parent you want to be? Do you wish to become a more conscious parent? I want you to meet someone who thinks a lot about conscious parenting and who created this FREE class. Her name is Anelia Lazarova, and she left the corporate world to become a child sleep consultant and founder of Sleeping Babies, Happy Parents, and on the way she became a mom also.

In her daily practice of trying to figure out how to be the best mom she could, she did some things really well and some things not so much. Anelia read numerous books and articles, watched webinars, attended and completed trainings on sleep, parenting, nutrition, activities, education, early development, and brain stimulation. This research process led her to get acquainted with the works of many and various experts in their fields, which inspired her to create an interview series where she interviews 20 wonderful folks who also are looking to support children’s development (including me!). The course starts October 16. Other speakers include Sue Atkins, Randi Rubenstein, Amy Bryant, Holly Homer, Dayna Abraham, and more!

This is for parents who want to develop their own parenting and are challenged with finding the time due to the priorities that come from having a career, children’s needs and other life stresses.

Here is some of what is going to be covered in the VIDEO INTERVIEWS:

  • How to live your amazing family life in harmony, a life where you are always calm and keep things under control
  • How you can use laughter to connect better with your children
  • How to leave your days as a yeller in the dust, focus on the positive, find joy in parenting and delight in your children
  • How to train your children’s taste-buds to enjoy nourishing, nutritionally beneficial foods as early as possible to ensure optimal development and establishment of lifelong healthy eating behaviours
  • How you can entertain your children with simple science experiments and fun activities for the whole family
  • How to handle stressful and extremely difficult situations such as divorce and what’s the best way to tell the children; AND MUCH MORE.

These interviews are REAL, short, and to the point CONVERSATIONS with experts who are well recognised in their field (because we know how busy you are)!

Register here for your free ticket to listen in starting October 16.

I hope you find useful and enjoy my part of this class. I’ll be talking about what happens when children don’t do what you want. And I hope you discover the other interesting speakers too.

Warmly, Steve
