(A Oct) Halloween_CarvedPumpkin_Beautiful2.jpgPumpkin hunting and carving, maze running, choosing Halloween costumes, harvest festivals...It's happening!

For added fun, Hoopla offers free Halloween music for kids!

I confess to enjoying a good storm if I'm safely at home with everything I need to ride it out.  I've hunkered down with snow, ice, thunder, hurricane storms, a serious flood and a windy El Nino drenching. I've pulled off roads because of fog, icy roads, blizzards and sheets of drenching rain. If I never meet a tornado, that's fine with me.

(A Buttons) Button_Weekend.jpgThere's a lot of interest in the coming El Nino! Let's involve the children in the science of it all.  Santa Cruz County has produced El Nino, A Guide for Residents.

Thank you for sending many new families our way. Please, drop us a line anytime and recommend our newsletter to a friend

Enjoy the weekend with your family, Parmalee

Come visit the Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center!

(A Oct) RanchoDelOso_BearExhibit.jpgStop at the renovated Nature and History Center and discover new interactive exhibits, and share the wonders and diversity of the Waddell Valley. Rancho del Oso is in the coastal section of Big Basin Redwoods State Park and is located 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1, on the south side of Waddell Creek.

The Center occupies a ranch-style house and grounds that were once the home of Hulda Hoover McLean, daughter of Theodore Hoover whose brother was President Herbert Hoover. It now consists of an intimate, protected courtyard surrounded by an informative exhibit hall that showcases both the natural and cultural history of the area and a large deck overlooking the Waddell Valley and the Pacific Ocean.

For those interested in birding, botany, intertidal marine life, and riparian habitats, the Waddell Beach and the many Rancho del Oso hiking trails offer superb resources for observation and study. There are equestrian, cycling, and backpacking opportunities available as well. In addition, Waddell Beach is known worldwide as one of the best spots for windsurfing and kite surfing. Regular surfers and boogie boarders also find it an ideal spot to pursue their activities.

Learn about current happenings in the park at the Nature and History Center, and also at the Rancho del Oso Ranger Station.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the park any time. When you visit, please be sure and park in designated areas. Note that dogs are not allowed in any portion of Rancho del Oso.

Number of children with peanut allergies has increased significantly

Dear Mayo Clinic: Why is it that so many kids these days have peanut allergies? I don't remember it being an issue even 20 years ago. Is it something most kids will grow out of? I have heard of children doing a peanut allergy study to "cure" them of their allergy. What does that involve? continued>>>>

Compulsive Texting Takes Toll on Teenagers Does your teenager have a texting problem?

Teenagers use text messaging more than any other mode of communication, so it may be hard to tell.   Christine: The Unexpected Makes You Think

(A Oct) Christine_Halloween.jpgWhen you are at a Halloween party you expect skeletons and ghosts and other scary stuff. If you are suddenly confronted by pink candy hearts you will probably do a double take.

Some researchers looked at this situation and had some interesting results. A situation where everything matches expectations is called "cultural fluency."  People will move somewhat mindlessly though these situation. However if they see something that doesn't fit their mind will wake up. If these people are asked about buying things, they are more likely to buy things if everything fits around...Read more>>>
