  Dancing Into Thanksgiving

(Photos General) JeanGorrindo.jpgWith a caller like Jean Gorindo coming into town, it's time to dust off your dancing shoes and take the family out for a night of dancing, even, or especially if, you "don't dance".  Contra dancers are mighty casual, so dress for comfort.  Swirly skirts are fun! What a great way to start the weekend and burn a few calories before Thanksgiving.  Experienced Contra dancers guarantee that the kids will sleep in after a night of dancing!  Beginners are welcome.  You may just want to make family dancing a habit!

So many friends tell me that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday.  It's a wonderful time for connecting with family and friends.  Irene van der Zande of Kidpower shares ways to make the holidays go well.  Enjoy!

Suki gets thoughtfully and deeply into differences in child-rearing cultures. Be sure to read her entire blog.  Local Steve Shapiro of Tuition Solutions Now offers some good articles for parents who need to be thinking about how to pay for college.  Is that not parents of all ages?!

Thank you for your interest in our newsletter. Please, drop us a line anytime and recommend us to a friend

Have a lovely fall weekend with your family, Parmalee

Irene at KidPower Shares Tips for Making Holidays Go Well

..."Special time" does NOT require perfect dinners, expensive gifts, fancy clothes, agreement about everything, doing things the way they've always been done, or flawless homes. Unrealistic expectations, rigid standards, and poor boundaries can cause enormous stress that breaks relationships down instead of building them up.

(Photos General) FamilyDinner3.jpgWhat makes time together special DOES include listening with compassion, appreciative communications rather than critical ones, accepting differences, managing problems with grace and humor, allowing space when needed, setting powerful and respectful boundaries when needed, and adapting traditions to work well for everyone.

Here are some of our most popular Kidpower articles to help you and your family have more fun and fewer problems during this special time of year.

Suki: Parenting in a Striving Culture

(Photos General) SukiWessling2013.jpgThe challenge

I have been honored to have my blog featured for some years now in the Santa Cruz Parent newsletter. Parmalee always links to such interesting information and asks such insightful questions. This week, she posed this one:

I listened to an Australian mother recount her adventures in learning how parents in different cultures raise children. Especially interesting was her visit to a Fiji Island where an elderly grandmother was raising 9 assorted child relatives while the parents were off working and sending money home. She sat inside her one room house watching tv while the children played outside, settling their squabbles themselves, never asking or expecting an adult to intervene. At night they shared a couple of mattresses. I figure that's at least 4 or 5 to a mattress. Now you wouldn't find that approach in Santa Cruz where we tend to hover, guide and structure a little more. Is there a message in here?

This is one I just can't let go, as it touches on a subject near and dear to my heart: the effects of modern culture on our health, happiness, and success.

I hear it from all sides: People want to adopt another culture's food, religion, or child-rearing because their own seems so inadequate.

We're strivers

Striving for a better life is one of the fundamental reasons for humans' success. In always trying to find something better, humans have done wonderful things. We have created lives in places like the U.S. that are devoid of any of the fight for survival that traditionally was part of the human experience, and still is in many places in this world.

But contemporary Americans have this urge to think that amidst our success we've missed out on some fundamental key to health and happiness.  Read more>>>

 Contra Dancing

Santa Cruz Dance

Contra dancing for beginners and experienced dancers
Friday11/21, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm
Ages: 7+ Admission Fees: $12

Music by THE HILLBILLIES FROM MARS, with Jean Gorrindo calling

Please join us Friday, November 21st at 7:00pm at the MCSC for a fun evening of contra dancing!

Admission donation is $12, with a discount for members and students.

The Hillbillies from Mars have been rocking the contra dance scene in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1982.  They combine their love and dedication to Celtic and American traditional fiddle music with a healthy dose of their own "folk roots" of rock 'n' roll, swing, Latin and African beats, forging a new tradition of dance music.

(Photos General) ContraDance_LotsofPeople.jpgDances will be called by Jean Gorrindo.  Jean hails from Los Osos near San Luis Obispo, and calls dances all over the US.  Her strong teaching and musical skills, combined with her musical and rhythmic vocal quality, help her deliver dances that are flowing, challenging, and fun!

Arrive by 6:40 for an introductory workshop, or by 6:00 if you can help set up.  If you can stay afterward to help clean up, that would be awesome!

(Photos General) ContraDance_withBaby.jpgFeel free to bring friends, family, neighbors, or just yourself.  Please bring soft-soled, non-marking shoes to help protect the floor and your feet, and a water bottle to help you stay hydrated.

There will be a snack potluck at about 8:30 - if you have snacks to share, please bring them.

This is an all-ages event.  Bring your joyful enthusiasm along with a sensibility toward care and consideration for your fellow dancers.  Please minimize your use of artificial fragrances at these events because some of our dancers are affected by these chemicals, which makes it hard for them to dance.
