(Graphics) Volunteersign.jpgGiving time is coming, although it seems to be giving time all year.  Some families have a rich tradition of giving and others have decided they want to get going on giving back. There is much need and there are  many ways to give, time, gifts, donatons.  We feature the Adopt-A-Family program.  You may want to work with Toys 4 Tots.  Visit the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center for many opportunities to serve.

It's today! The Central Coast Independent Schools of California are hosting their annual  School Fair.  This is a great way to chat informally with representatives from a variety of schools.  Find out if their values mesh with yours.  Ask about their curricula and scholarship availability.  Come with your questions.  There's a free raffle for some great educational prizes: tickets to plays, vouchers for summer camps and programsWe shall be there.  Please come by and say "Hi!"

Holiday events are coming in. Remember you can isolate events by category and date. We've selected Nov.1- Dec 12 "Holidays" using the Search feature on our Events Calendar.

Enjoy the weekend, Parmalee

This School Fair is for all  parents who value the quality of education, are curious and like to be informed about innovative programs and options.  Please join us and encourage friends to visit, explore and chat with representatives from these many fine independent schools at the Central Coast Independent School Fair.  It's free and open to all.  It's a great time-saver to be able to explore choices.  One of them could be a good fit for your family.

  Adopt-A-Family Holiday Project

(Graphics) VolunteerHands.jpgA Message from the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center

As our days grow shorter, many of us shift our thoughts to sharing the joy of the holiday season.

Unfortunately,  an unprecedented number of local families are struggling with poverty, disabilities, abandonment, or severe economic strain and the holidays can be a worrisome time.

These families  struggle to meet their basic needs and may go without enough food and warm clothing, let alone toys or other holiday gifts.

TO ADOPT:  Phone lines are open Nov 5-Dec 13th-  Santa Cruz:  831-427-5075 Mon- Fri 10am- 4pm  Watsonville: 831-722-2364 Mon-Thurs 10am- 4pm

ADOPT A FAMILY Businesses, individuals, and families can adopt a family of any size. Adopters are asked to provide family packages which include food gift certificates, clothing for the family, a gift for each child, and household items like blankets, towels, or sheets.

VOLUNTEER AS AN ELF  Volunteer opportunities abound  to support the project.  VIEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

TAKE A STAR  Do you only have time to get one gift? Simply pick up a star from our participating local businesses, purchase the gift, and return it to the business. Stars will be available at participating Wells Fargo Branches throughout Santa Cruz County starting in Mid-November. Locations and pick-up times coming soon.

DONATE GIFT CERTIFICATES  Gift certificates from any grocery store, shoe store, bookstore or department store let our families choose exactly what they need for the holidays. This season due to current economic strains we have a large number of teens to be adopted and teens in particular, appreciate movie passes, certificates from music stores or clothing store certificates. Certificates can be dropped off at the Santa Cruz or Watsonville Office.

Join the fun. Volunteer to help the Annual Interactive Toy Train Exhibit at MAH

(Special Event Images / Graphics) TrainExhibit1.jpgComing soon and looking for train loving volunteers to help kids man the controls - Toy Trains at the MAH

Join us for a rotating cavalcade of  operating toy trains from the 1920s to the 21st century. Watch a massive standard gauge steam engine from the 1920s start up-headlight flashing, drive wheels spinning, smoke flowing from the smoke stack and of course a mighty whistle.

On another track, see a remote controlled modern production of an O gauge diesel with all the latest electronic features. Hear the roar as the diesel starts up, the blast of the mighty horn, the squeal of the brakes at the train slows for a curve and the chatter between the engineer and the control tower. Toy trains have come a long way over the last century, but new or old, the emphasis is on fun!

The exhibit is opens Friday December 21st 5-9pm through Saturday January 5th.

Volunteers should call Eric at 408-674-2573 or email him.  Teen volunteers are welcome!  Choose a day and an afternoon or morning time.
