Honor Veterans and their families. The men and women who have served our country are a strong part of why we have freedom and choices. As a greater awareness of sacrifices both in service and post service has increased in recent years, more and more individuals and businesses are honoring and saying thank you to vets who chose military service. Many local restaurants offer free meals. The Tyrolean is serving its own adopted group of 20 vets. The San Lorenzo Valley Museum honored veterans with a dinner.
There's a parade in Watsonville. Veterans are invited to march in the Walk of Honor Parade at 10 a.m., down Main Street and East Beach Street, from St. Patrick's Church to the Veterans Memorial Building, where there will be an Hour to Honor Ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. Watch performances by the Vets Tin Can Band at Cooper and Union in Santa Cruz 11-1.
At Lighthouse Point, 10am, join in the dedication of a memorial to commemorate the service of the 54th Coast Artillery, an all black unit stationed at Lighthouse Point during World War II. The ceremony will be attended by two surviving members of the unit as well as other military personnel and will be followed by a documentary film screening at the Vets Hall.
For fun on this rainy Veteran's Day there is a special Veterans Day Skate at the Santa Cruz Roller Palladium 1-3pm. Get Coupon.
"The end is nothing; the road is all," wrote the worldly yet ultimately reclusive and very private novelist, Willa Cather. In a small Nebraska town in the early 1870's she was given and she took, her right to make choices. She was curious, slightly rebellious (at age 12-13 wore boys clothes and a boy haircut), an avid reader, fascinated with opera and adventurous. She went east, wrote, became editor of a popular woman's magazine, traveled abroad and in her 40's began writing her novels about individuals' "road" in the midwest (Oh Pioneer, My Antonia) and west (Death Comes to the Archbishop).
Similarly we strive to provide for our children "the road" that prepares them for their own journey. On Saturday, Michael Olson, local story teller and host of the nationally syndicated talk show, Food Chain Radio, explores with two locals the effects of how we handle chores and allowances.
