  New Website Coming

(Ads) ParentClickLaunch.jpgIn January we are rolling out a new website with enhanced bells and whistles for you! A few offerings are  more social networking features, easier navigation, video uploading and the option to post comments (positive) on local businesses and events.

You received an e-newsletter this week from Parent Click about the launch.  You may not have realized that SantaCruzParent.com, along with other sister sites, is affiliated with Parent Click.  Santa Cruz Parent is one of the flagship sites, and one of the fastest growing, among the sister sites in providing a quality local online family resource that connects families and community organizations --both profits and non-profits.

It was great to see a full house at the Rio for a documentary/opinion movie about education.  For me, seeing Race to Nowhere, confirmed the truth of the old adage "Less is more".  Less homework leads to more learning, happier students and families --happier teachers too.  Less governmental control and red tape from far-away entities is more conducive to empowering local creativity, innovation and joy in learning.  Just take a look at the diverse philosophies in local private schools, charter schools, home schooling and public schools.  Each program has its own unique philosophy.  Ultimately the quality of our children's education is up to us parents.  With such a wide array of programs, parents can make the best choices for their children.  Perhaps Santa Cruz parents and educators will decide to make our county a "homework free zone" or offer homework free days or weeks or ?  Bring the homework discussion to your child's school.

Suki offers her personal analysis of the movie and relates it to our local culture.  An interesting article, Spending Less for Better Education, caught my attention.  What a concept.

(Icons/Graphics) Camp_HolidayCampBaseball.jpgCheck out the THANKSGIVING and WINTER CAMP opportunities.  There's everything from soccer to art to theater and more.   Keep checking the calendar, as holiday fairs and events are being posted daily.

Jody's Fresh Prep Kitchens delivers now.  Order your favorite dinners online and they arrive on your doorstep between 4 and 6 pm.  We just tried the tamale pie --yum!

Have a great weekend, Parmalee

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgThe other night I joined a boisterous, energized crowd at the Rio Theater to see the second of two films about education making waves these days. (See my review of the first, Waiting for Superman. I'm going to attempt to avoid a compare/contrast of these two radically different films here; hopefully I'll get to that soon.)

Race to Nowhere is tailor made for Santa Cruz. The audience loved it, alternately cheering and sighing (and sometimes a bit of crying) for kids suffering from the high stakes of our current educational system. You'd think that Race to Nowhere was just preaching to the choir in Santa Cruz, a city/county chock full of alternative educational opportunities. But the comment time afterwards made it clear that the film's message is one we could pay a lot more attention to here.

Race to Nowhere was made by a mom, Vicki Abeles, whose daughter was hospitalized due to the stress of her middle school education. Abeles realized that her daughter's experience was not only not unique, but that it was becoming more and more common. Faced with pressure to succeed from kindergarten or even before, kids are stressed out and anxious. But far from being stressed by an education that demands that they grow and learn, they are being stressed out by an education that constantly demands busy work with few real applications in their future lives  Read more...
