  We remember and honor...

(0 A May 2019) MemorialDayCemetery2019.jpgMemorial Day weekend is very personal for too many of us as we recall with fond memories loved ones who gave their lives to preserve our freedoms. Visiting famous cemeteries with their seemingly endless rows of white crosses or quiet cemeteries in nearly every small town across America evokes an awesome image of young lives lost too soon, relatives not known well enough and families (0 A May 2019) MemorialDay_MomandSon5.jpgleft with an ache that never quite goes away. Let us remember, honor and celebrate with our families on Memorial Day.

Anticipating a move generates both excitement at the prospect of a next adventure and nostalgia over leaving a well-loved old home." Read about a big move for one of Santa Cruz' iconic institutions, Gateway School.

I've watched California's educational culture evolve: maturing private schools, the introduction and growth of charter schools, cyclical changes in public school rankings and more recently a very strong movement to home schooling. Education is one area where California citizens have vibrantly insisted on local input. They have consistently fostered CHOICE and sought to improve options. In my humble opinion, where there is quality, it is owed to the LOCAL support of teachers, administrators and parents for setting high standards.

Please share our newsletter with new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events!

Have a memorial weekend with family and friends!  Parmalee

  On the Move!

(0 A May 2019) Gatewayentrytocampus.jpgGateway School Moves to a New Campus

This summer, Gateway School, Santa Cruz's largest and longest-established K-8 independent school will pick up its books, tables and art supplies, and move a couple of miles along West Cliff Drive to take up residence at the newly refurbished former Natural Bridges campus on Swift Street.

This is big change for Gateway. Although the school has moved several times in its 48 year history, it has made its home in the rented building (0 A May 2019) Gateway_AerialPhoto.jpgbehind the (non-affiliated) church of Oblates of St Joseph for the last 28 years. So much of Santa Cruz thinks of Gateway as connected with that particular site.

As preparations get underway for the final Graduation and Step Up Ceremony at the existing campus on June 6th, the community has a palpable sense of excitement about the next chapter in the school's story. Families, students and faculty contributed ideas for the design of the new campus which are being brought to life by professional designers, landscape architects, and (0 A May 2019) GatewayElementaryDiningPlaza-1.jpgcontractors, including Barry Swenson Builders, SSA Landscape Architects, and Stripe Design. Three-dimensional visualizations and overhead plans are proudly displayed amongst colorful student art in the school's lobby mounted for the annual Art Tour.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for a unique public-private partnership that benefits all children in Santa Cruz," Head of School Dr. Zachary Roberts says. "Gateway is moving to a site with much more space and opportunities for our innovative program to thrive. Santa Cruz City Schools will have the now-vacant campus occupied and their bottom line increased with our annual rent. And for the community, that empty space brought back to life with caring tenants."

In almost every way, the Natural Bridges campus is bigger than the school's current site. It has 10,000 square feet more indoor space, including five additional classrooms and two large indoor areas that can (0 A May 2019) GatewayPodC02.jpgbe used for whole-school assemblies. It also has four more bathrooms than the current campus and is fully ADA accessible.

Gateway is investing close to a million dollars in improvements into the site. From building new, separate playgrounds for the Kindergarteners and elementary students, to installing flooring, lighting, and data/electrical systems, the school is doing its part to ensure the space is well designed and ready for students in September.

Gateway takes pride in having professional faculty teaching in all areas of their specialist programs.  The Music, Elementary Spanish and Life Lab Garden science teachers are all excited to have dedicated indoor teaching spaces for the first time. The fabrication lab and maker space (fondly called the Discovery Center, or Disco) will double in size, as will the Art Room. And the school's P.E. teachers are especially excited that the new campus includes a gym, which has just had the floors replaced.

(0 A May 2019) GatewayPodA.jpgClassrooms at the new campus are arranged in two "pods' each with a central, flexible space. Lower School and Upper School teachers have looked forward to the way these flex spaces will facilitate the  collaborative and project-based learning areas of the program. Hannah Wikse, Assistant Head of School, noted that "Interdisciplinary projects are an important part of our curriculum. It will be fantastic to enable students to break out for small group work, multi-grade projects and enquiry-based learning."

(0 A May 2019) Gatewaygarden.jpgGateway is known for its award-winning Life Lab garden where children get their hands dirty as they learn environmental science surrounded by hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies. Caprice Potter created the existing Life Lab, one of the very first in Santa Cruz and a model for many which have followed, and has nurtured the plants as well as the hearts and minds of the children who tend them for over twenty years.  Currently working closely with the landscape architects as work commences on the school's new garden classroom, Potter says "They have helped us translate our ideas into beautiful plans and drawings that made our ideas visible, and that's helped our community respond with incredible enthusiasm and also philanthropy to support this project. SSA also helped us navigate the complex process of building out the infrastructure in the right way, from civil engineering to construction drawings."

Gateway School has been one of Santa Cruz's premier independent progressive K-8 schools since 1970. Gateway School's mission is to inspire children to lead lives of purpose and compassion through scholarship and citizenship.  Learn more at www.gatewaysc.org.
