Endangered Species Weekend

(0 May 2017) Zoo_BlackRhino.jpg

Did you know SF Zoo has dozens of threatened and endangered animals? We're celebrating all of them and raising awareness.

May 19-May 21

What do black rhinos, tigers, and lowland gorillas have in common? They're all endangered species and animals you can find at SF Zoo!  Did you know SF Zoo has dozens of threatened and endangered animals? We're celebrating all of them and raising awareness about Endangered Species Day (Friday, May 19) from Friday-Sunday. Conservation is at the heart of the Zoo's mission and you're invited to learn the importance of protecting endangered species as well as everyday actions you can take to help protect them.

(0 May 2017) Zoo_Tiger.jpgThere are many opportunities to learn about conservation at the Zoo!

Print the "Endangered Species Resource Guide" (coming soon) with a listing of endangered animals at SF Zoo and go around to visit them all.  Stop and listen to Keeper Talks taking place throughout the day.  Learn through touch and ask questions of an expert at one of the many biofacts stations displaying animal bones, skulls, furs and more.

(0 May 2017) Zoo_Chimp.jpgPick up endangered species informational cards with animal fun facts.

The Amazing Dinosaur Found (Accidentally) by Miners in Canada

(0 May 2017) Nodosaur2.jpgKnown as a nodosaur, this 110 million-year-old, armored plant-eater is the best preserved fossil of its kind ever found.

Stunning Discovery: Some 110 million years ago, this armored plant-eater lumbered through what is now western Canada, until a flooded river swept it into open sea. The dinosaur's undersea burial preserved its armor in exquisite detail. Its skull still bears tile-like plates and a gray patina of fossilized skins. Read more>>>

Get Ready Now for the Annual Garage Sale

(0 May 2017) GarageSale_2017.jpgResidents of Santa Cruz and Live Oak are invited to join the 18th annual City of Santa Cruz Garage Sale Weekend, June 3-4, by hosting a sale on one or both days. The annual event promotes local reuse, repair and resale opportunities.

The City sponsored event offers free promotion of residents' sales and free garage sale kits providing incentive to do some spring cleaning and allow discards to have a second life. There is also that extra cash and extra space generated by selling unneeded items including clothes, toys and dishware.

Residents who host garage sales may register online to be included as part of the Garage Sale Treasure Map. The map, which is smartphone and tablet compatible, is designed to help shoppers locate sales or search for specific items.

Upon registering, residents may order a garage sale kit which contains bright yellow street signs, labels for pricing items and a booklet of helpful tips. Kits will be mailed out promptly.

The City will promote Garage Sale Weekend in local newspapers, online and through the University of California, Santa Cruz, to help boost garage sale attendance.

Residents may sign up to host a garage sale or find more information at www.cityofsantacruz.com/garagesales.
