(0 A May 2018) Library_DanaMacKenzie.jpgComing soon! Annual chess tournament for ages 6-18 at Aptos Library. This is where Dana, teaches kids how to play chess.  You can imagine how much fun chess with Dana is by this photo of him!

From Dana's website, "As you might guess from the above photo, I am also a chess player. I have been a member of the U.S. Chess Federation since 1971 (the beginning of the "Fischer boom"). I was the state champion of North Carolina in 1985 and 1987, and (0 A May 2018) Library_DanaMacKenzieKitty.jpgearned the National Master title in 1988. In 2006, I joined the team of master teachers at www.chesslecture.com. I record two video lectures a month. Ironically, I find teaching chess to be more satisfying than teaching math was. Perhaps it is because I know that my "students" at ChessLecture are already interested."

We have some very musically talented teens in Santa Cruz.  Their years of lessons and practice have led to some exciting performances this weekend. Read more about the Jazz Honor Band and the Youth Chamber Music Competition.

Sunday catch up with Suki who's singing with Persephone at the Capitola Library Book Sale on Sunday.

According to Suki, "When I was three years old, I sat down at the piano and picked out the melody to a Beethoven piece that was on the radio. My (0 A May 2018) SukiGuitar.jpgpiano teacher mom thought she had a prodigy on her hands. Since that misleadingly brilliant beginning, I have spent my life happily being an amateur musician. I sing choral music, and play guitar and sing jazz and folk. Currently I am performing jazz (guitar and voice) as part of Persephone, a small jazz/pop group.

Think about taking the family kelp pickling this weekend with the Adventure Sports Unlimited folks if you like camaraderie, unique food and fun!

Enjoy the weekend with the family! Parmalee

New Astronomy Program Series and Telescope Check is Out of This World

The Santa Cruz Public Library System (SCPL) is very excited to announce a new program and service designed to educate adults and families about astronomy.

The program, called Reach for the Stars, explores all facets of astronomy at various branch libraries throughout the county. Experienced astronomers, complete beginners, adults, and kids will find this series fun and informative. Topics will vary month-to-month.

SCPL is piloting a new service in conjunction with the Reach for the Stars program series, where borrowers will be able to check out a telescope with their library card. The telescopes will be subject to the same rules as most library materials, except they will not be renewable. There a limited number of telescopes available for checkout, but they can be requested and put on hold. This new service will be available beginning May 16th.

According to Library Director Susan Nemitz, "This is a great example of 21st century library service, where the library isn't just providing books so people learn passively about a topic. We deliver programs for hands-on learning, we connect people with experts and each other, and provide tools for people to create new experiences for themselves- in this case with check-out-able telescopes."

CONTEST! SCPL is also inviting the public to name the telescopes during a naming contest between May 16th and May 31st. Anyone may enter the contest by submitting up to 3 name suggestions either in person at any branch library or via Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter by tagging us @santacruzpl and using the hashtag #ReachfortheStars.

Introduction to telescopes and stargazing: Downtown Santa Cruz, 224 Church St., Tuesday May 15, 6:30-8:30pm

Star Types and light Pollution: Boulder Creek, 13390 West Park Ave., Tuesday June 26, 6:30-8:30pm

Comets and Asteroids: Aptos, 7695 Soquel Dr., Tuesday July 17, 6:30-8:30pm

(0 A May 2018) JazzHonorBand.jpgKuumbwa Jazz Honor Band, May 17, 7:00 pm

The Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band represents the best of the best high-school student musicians from Santa Cruz and neighboring counties. Hand-picked by their band directors, these talented young ambassadors of jazz pass a rigorous audition to earn their position in the Honor Band. During weekly rehearsals at Kuumbwa, they study advanced jazz theory, arranging, improvisation, and learn valuable life skills in teamwork and critical thinking. Under the direction of Terrel Eaton, the band gains vital performing experience at special events and festivals throughout the school year, culminating in a special headline performance at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center.

To book the Honor Band for a concert or private event, or for more information about the Kuumbwa Jazz education programs, please contact, Brian Fitzgerald.
