(Photos General) SeymourSummer.jpgMarch Membership Madness is "in" at Seymour Center!  It's a great month to visit and become a member by supporting our local educational resources.  Community Free Day is March 9, tomorrow!!

We couldn't resist bringing you this data on what happens to your body after drinking a coke.  It's enough to make one give up the habit.  Anything can become a habit if you practice it for 30 days.

It's healthful to get together with friends.  Don't stay stuck at home or work.  You can find time to put yourself first once in a while!

Are you planning ahead for Spring Break?  Several Spring Break Camps are already listed with us.  Summer Camps are beginning to post also!

Have a great weekend, Parmalee

Have a Healthful Girls Day Out

Adapted from Vitality, January 1, 2012

We enjoy catching up with our friends, whether it's every week, month or just a few times a year. For most of us it seems to revolve around a meal, a cup of coffee or a couple of drinks. It's a great way to catch up on conversation, but it's often not the most healthful practice. Fortunately it's not difficult to transform this get-together into a healthful event.

(Photos General) Yogaclass.jpgTake a yoga class
One of the best ways to stick to a fitness program is to "buddy up" with someone and make sure you go together. Replace calerie-laden lunches with a morning of bending and stretching together. Santa Cruz abounds in yoga facilities. You can expect to pay atound $10 to $20 per class, or much less if you enroll in some type of membership package. Plus the potential health benefits of yoga are plentiful, including less pain, reduced stress and greater flexibility.

Do the local trails
Get-togethers don't have to cost a lot of money either. A good free activity is to go on a mission to explore the local hiking and biking trails. These can be as simple as a casual walk in the forests or make a habit of the walks, gradually increasing the intensity. You could add in some of the lengthier local beaches also or walk the length of West Cliff.

Cook together
There's a reason people congregate around food. It's a traditional time-honored way to gather together and enjoy one another's company. Make it healthy! One option is to cook together at someone's home, then each can take home a portion. Bored with your same old recipes? Have a salad or veggie gathering. Another option is to take a cooking class together. New Leaf offers a variety of classes every month, some free and others nominal cost, all healthful!

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) SpaMoms_2.jpgSpend a morning at the spa
After you have done all the action activities for a while treat yourselves to a spa! Nothing comes close to the experience you and your friends can have at a day spa. While there you can relax away your cares with a soothing facial, massage, foot bath or dozens of other therapies for your mind and body. In general, expect to pay around $100 and up for your morning of luxury, but it's well worth consideration as an occasional treat.

Studies have shown that people with strong social ties, action habits and healthful food practices have fewer occurrences of depression. Go for it. You owe it to yourself and your families. They will appreciate the healthful, invigorated you!

With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what's wrong with our malnourished bodies, it's no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. Food Matters sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide 'sickness industry' and gives people some scientifically verifiable solutions for overcoming illness naturally.

What Happens to Your Body within An hour of Drinking A Coke, et.al.

posted by Nutrition Researchers on October 24, 2007
filed under: Foods that Hurt

Don't drink cola if you want to be healthy. Consuming soft drinks is bad for so many reasons that science cannot even state all the consequences. If you do drink soft drinks, as well as other sugary foods, you need the two products listed at the bottom of this article.

One thing we know for sure is that drinking Coke, as a representative of soft drinks, wreaks havoc on the human organism. What happens? Writer Wade Meredith has shown the quick progression of Coke's assault.

The main problem is sugar. It's an evil that the processed food industry and sugar growers don't want people to know about. Even dietitians, financially supported by sugar growers and sugary product manufacturers, are loathe to tell us the truth.

Don't believe that dietitians are influenced by huge corporate concerns that feed people sugar, drugs and other health-defying ingredients? Go to their official website and check out the sponsors yourself. They are right there in plain sight: http://www.eatright.org/corporatesponsors/

When somebody drinks a Coke watch what happens...

  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don't immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There's plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • 60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • 60 Minutes: The caffeine's diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you'll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • 60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you'll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You've also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

So there you have it, an avalanche of destruction in a single can. Imagine drinking this day after day, week after week. Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener.

Pam: March Comes in Like a Lamb or Two...

(Photos General) PamCarrico.jpgYeah, the saying is that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but I like to create my own reality!

Recently, March came to Peaceful Valley Farm, like a lamb. Two of them, actually. These sweeties come from the amazing folks at Deep Root Ranch, in Watsonville. There, Jean and Bob raise sheep and hogs (as well as chickens, geese, and a few HUGE cows) in the most natural and organic way possible. It's idyllic there, with all the animals roaming around freely, enjoying the green grass and fresh air. We learned that, by strange coincidence, our Olivia-the-pig is the cousin of one of their hogs. Small world, farming.

I really hadn't considered sheep, until my neighbor's Suffolk Sheep started dropping babies recently... continued>>>
