  Do what you love...

(0 Mar 2017) LitWits_KidsWhoRead.jpgIt has been an amazing journey for Becky and Jenny, sisters and best friends, who formed LitWits not too long ago. From offering a few workshops with a sprinkling of students to launching the national sale of literature kits for teachers and their students, these two local entrepreneurs are the epitome of (0 Mar 2017) BeckyandJennywithBooks.jpg"Do what you love...", in this case reading great literature and making it come alive for the children who enter their workshops.  Parent or teacher, these kits are for you!

The weather looks perfect for hiking anywhere the wildflowers are out. Take a hike in one of our Santa Cruz County parks!

I review The Secret Life of Fat by Sylvia Tara.  It's an enlightening true science history which offers hope for all who want to be as healthy as possible.

If you are unfamiliar with Santa Cruz' Ben Jammin Holck, you've probably just moved to Santa Cruz. Ben Jammin is active in children's theater and just about anything that involves singing, acting, performing on the stage. He shares a poignant story with us.  Want to support the arts locally?  Your contribution can help provide scholarships for budding actresses and actors who want to get dramatic in Ben Jammin's classes.

Have a sunny weekend,  Parmalee

LitWits gets wonderful stories off the page

(0 Mar 2017) JennyandBecky.jpgLitWits, under the creativity and guidance of Jenny and Becky, gets wonderful stories off the page in real-life, hands-on ways.

"First we do it live, then we pack it up online for teachers everywhere.

First, we put our sensory, straight-from-the-story ideas and materials into practice. We turn great books into immersion workshops for local kids, who arrive having already read the book. For three hours they get to taste, touch, hear, smell, and do what the characters did, while we weave in discussion points and original academic handouts. It's like a field trip inside the book!

Both avid and reluctant readers have a fabulous time, and their knowledge and empathy increase as they experience the book. Best of all, they're inspired to read more.

It's so fun and rewarding - we can't keep the joy to ourselves! So we turn that joy into LitWits Kits, for teachers everywhere to use in class.

(0 Mar 2017) LitWits-Kit-A-WRINKLE-IN-TIME.jpgFor every experiential workshop and LitWits Kit, we've reached straight into the story to come up with:

sensory props:  kids see, hear, smell, and feel what the characters did
BookBites:  kids taste what the characters ate
creative projects:  kids make what a character made
kinetic activities:  kids do what a character did
academic handouts:  kids learn the story's narrative arc, vocabulary, setting, and more
creative writing:  kids write what a character wrote or felt

ALL our unique ideas and materials are packed into every kit - project and activity directions, models, templates, and prompts; academic printables with keys; takeaway topics for discussion; BookBites and prop ideas, audiovisual and information links, and more.  We've saved you countless hours creating fun, memorable, lesson-packed experiences. Check out our gallery for examples of the fun, and visit our store to see all the books we've "done!"

It's amazing how much kids learn while they're "just" having fun. (Read how and why they learn this way, below.) No wonder kids and teachers love to "LitWit"!"

  Forgiveness

by Ben Jammin Holck

(0 Mar 2017) BenJamminwithCats.jpgThree years ago, I met the meth-addict father of one of my students for the first time when he attended a show I directed starring his son. The boy's "single" mother had only managed to afford our program with the aid of a scholarship; and during the show's standing ovation (when the audiences' back was turned), the addict father was seen stealing money from our concession sales. When I confronted him outside, he vehemently denied it, even though his family and I knew he had taken the money. The understandably embarrassed mother could only apologize while the son wept tears of shame over what his father had done.

Much time passed, the son continued to perform in more of my shows, and I never saw the father again. I had all but forgotten the incident until yesterday when I got an unexpected phone call from the boy's father. He told me that he had been clean and sober for the last year and a half and that that he wanted to meet with me and pay back the money he had stolen.

I agreed, and when I saw him, he explained how he had been plagued with guilt over the matter for all these years, that he had never felt worse about anything he had ever done - and that he needed to make things right in the eyes of his son. It was nice to find-out he had a conscience. He thanked me for the guidance I'd given his son and paid back three-fold the money he had stolen.

Locking eyes, I said, "I forgive you". The universe sighed. I said it a second time to make sure he heard me as tears began to form. I said it a third time for effect and we embraced. The best part was, I got to forgive him. Forgiveness - it's really what it's all about : )

Ben Jammin Holck is Artistic Director of Santa Cruz Performing Arts, a nonprofit, charitable organization whose mission is to provide classes, programs, and events where individuals can develop skills in music, dance, and theater, thereby fostering self-esteem and an appreciation of the arts.

Sylvia Tara presents an amazing history on the research on fat interspersed with personal true stories that make research  and personal experiences real.

This is a must read for all of us who struggle with gaining weight, especially women, who gain more easily and lose with greater difficulty and effort than men. It's also good for women who are still a healthful weight but have yet to meet the challenges of menopause and hormonal changes. Not to leave out the men, it also speaks to their specific challenges as they age.

I've read it once and am still going back in an effort to digest the science and apply some of the discoveries to my own journey.
