  Independence and Responsibility

(A June) 4thJuly_Girls-dancing.jpgMy friend thinks America is all about guns.  I think we're about independence.  We still dance together.  That's America!  This weekend we celebrate America's Birthday.

Several years ago I overheard a snippet of conversation that has stayed with me: "...our founding fathers were "privileged, wealthy, old, white men" who wrote a constitution to benefit themselves." I've since learned more about the sacrifices they made over many years, health, personal time and wealth among others.  They were among our first patriots.

Over 239 years our constitution has weathered well and clarified and afforded rights for many different classes, races, cultures, ages and other identifiers.  What a framework!  I say "Whether you like it as it is or you would change it, work within the framework to support it or make changes.  It provides for that.  Being a citizen of America is an awesome privilege.  Every one of my friends who are first generation immigrants keeps telling me that. Thank you founding fathers for our Constitution!"  With it comes responsibility.  Now is a good time to renew our knowledge of constitution and share it with the children!"

  Teen Safety Academy

Santa Cruz Police Department's Teen Public Safety Academy

(A June) TeenPublicSafetyAcademy.jpgThe summer Teen Academy courses developed by the Santa Cruz Police Department provide a phenomenal opportunity to Santa Cruz teenagers who are considering serving their community in careers in either law enforcement or public safety, and those who are interested in learning public safety skills and more about their community from the public servant perspective.

In the one-week* course participants gain an understanding of what it takes to become a law enforcement officer, firefighter, 911 dispatcher, and emergency responder through direct observation and participation.

Beginning with physical training each morning promptly at 8 o'clock, the day will focus upon learning various procedures and skills that will include:

  • Police investigations procedures
  • Understanding Traffic Section responsibilities of the SCPD
  • Learning about Current Gang identification, culture and colors
  • Identifying narcotics, drug paraphernalia and illegal drug usage
  • A field trip to 911 Dispatch to learn about dispatcher requirements and to observe the call center in action
  • Observing a Police K-9 demonstration
  •  An entire day with the SC Fire Department in which teens will: train and obtain CPR certification; receive fire extinguisher training, hose and water flow experience, technical rescue equipment (rescue techniques), ropes and knots, and knowledge of specialized equipment.
  • Participation in controlled vehicle pursuit and high risk vehicle stop
  • Learning and practicing ESU tactical and clear building techniques

Classes are limited to 20 participants enabling teens to meet and engage with officers and various public servants directly. Questions directed to officers who are presenting are encouraged, as are discussions.

Classes run for one week, July 11-15, 25-29 & Aug 8-12, Monday - Friday, from 8 am - 4 pm.

Graduation will be on Friday at 3:30 pm, and family members are invited to attend!

The United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation

by Jonathan Hennessey (Author), Aaron McConnell (Illustrator)

Our leaders swear to uphold it, our military to defend it. It is the blueprint for the shape and function of government itself and what defines Americans as Americans. But how many of us truly know our Constitution?

(A June) Book_USConstitution.jpgThe United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation uses the art of illustrated storytelling to breathe life into our nation's cornerstone principles. Simply put, it is the most enjoyable and groundbreaking way to read the governing document of the United States. Spirited and visually witty, it roves article by article, amendment by amendment, to get at the meaning, background, and enduring relevance of the law of the land.

What revolutionary ideas made the Constitution's authors dare to cast off centuries of rule by kings and queens? Why do we have an electoral college rather than a popular vote for president and vice president? How did a document that once sanctioned slavery, denied voting rights to women, and turned a blind eye to state governments running roughshod over the liberties of minorities transform into a bulwark of protection for all?

The United States Constitution answers all of these questions. Sure to surprise, challenge, and provoke, it is hands down the most memorable introduction to America's founding document.

TV Historical Drama: Legends and Lies,The Patriots

(A June) Patriots_BenFranklin.jpgI've been watching Legends and Lies: The Patriots on tv.  "This 10-part series dispels the exaggerations and falsehoods which have developed over the years, shedding new light on iconic characters and their stories. Legends & Lies cuts through the myths and brings untold truths to the screen for the first time."

(A June) Patriots_Boy.jpgIt's a dramatized documentary about the era in our history when a powerful swell of sentiment among disparate groups of citizens (highly educated, merchants, laborers, etc.) for breaking with British rule and taxation without representation led to ultimately winning the Revolutionary War and founding of our American nation.  A vignette within the story clarified one man's struggle with opposing ideas.   Benjamin Franklin's evolution from royalist sympathizer (ruling class) to supporter of independence demonstrated mankind's continuous reach for freedom.  Over the 239 years since 1776 our way of life under the rule of law structured by our constitution has provided for increased freedoms, often contentiously, but relatively smoothly compared with other nations.

  A Good Read: Callings

Stories of passion, courage, and commitment, following individuals as they pursue the work they were born to do, from StoryCorps founder Dave Isay

(A June) Book_Callings.jpg"In Callings, the Purpose and Passion of Work, StoryCorps founder Dave Isay presents unforgettable stories from people doing what they love. Some found their paths at a very young age, others later in life; some overcame great odds or upturned their lives in order to pursue what matters to them. Many of their stories have never been broadcast or published by StoryCorps until now.

We meet a man from the barrios of Texas whose harrowing experiences in a family of migrant farmers inspired him to become a public defender. We meet a longtime waitress who takes pride in making regulars and newcomers alike feel at home in her Nashville diner. We meet a young man on the South Side of Chicago who became a teacher in order to help at-risk teenagers like the ones who killed his father get on the right track. We meet a woman from Little Rock who helps former inmates gain the skills and confidence they need to rejoin the workforce. Together they demonstrate how work can be about much more than just making a living, that chasing dreams and finding inspiration in unexpected places can transform a vocation into a calling. Their shared sense of passion, honor, and commitment brings deeper meaning and satisfaction to every aspect of their lives.

An essential contribution to the beloved StoryCorps collection, Callings is an inspiring tribute to rewarding work and the American pursuit of happiness."   source: review on Amazon

Callings, The Pursuit and Passion of Work (a StoryCorps book) is not yet in our library database, so be sure to ask for it to be added.  Other books by Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps on NPR, are available.
