  America the Beautiful, Happy 4th!

(0 July 2017) America-beaUTIFUL.jpgI was driving a country road, tuned into SiriusXM, when Elvis came on singing America the Beautiful.  I sang along with Elvis and choked up at the end; I always do. I grew up singing this beautiful song and introduced it to many children. Friends from Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Kenya have sung it (also Red River Valley) with me while we toured our country's natural wonders. The images it describes are real and beautiful. I've seen them all, mountains purple in the distance, grains waving across fruited plains, shining seas (Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific) and more. I love this country. It is so beautiful and so blessed with its freedom. We may not be perfect but we the people are in charge of our destiny thanks to the courage and wisdom of great patriots, men and women both, in the late 1700's. Happy 4th of July America, Happy Birthday!

(A June) 4thJuly_EventsParties.jpg Have a great 4th celebrating freedom and our heritage. All 4th of July Events are in the Online Calendar.

  Independence Day

(0 July 2017) 4th_us-flag.jpgThe Fourth of July-also known as Independence Day or July 4th-has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution.

On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Movie for the 4th of July Weekend

(0 July 2017) Movie_JohnandAbigail.jpgHere's a quality movie for the 4th of July weekend. It's good.  Don't let the non-Hollywood aspect put you off.

It's suitable for kids. And ladies, don't kid yourself!  While women did not have the vote in the 18th century,  they were plenty powerful and in this marriage Abigail Addams was highly respected for (0 July 2017) 4th_Movie_JohnAdams.jpgher wisdom, contributions, sacrifices and support.

From HBO Films comes this Emmy(R)-winning, seven-part miniseries starring Paul Giamatti as John Adams, the Founding Father and 2nd President of the U.S who played a pivotal role in fostering the American Revolution and building a republic.

"The highly acclaimed HBO miniseries on Founding Father and second President John Adams is fascinating. The series establishes an objective perspective toward Adams that is respectful but also recognizes his flaws. The miniseries is best at portraying the extraordinary relationship between John Adams and his wife of 54 years, Abigail. The series starts in 1770, with each episode taking place a few years apart. So, the audience gets seven different insights into Adams and his effect on America's founding." (a family movie review)

Enjoy!
