(Holidays) 4thJuly_fireworksStagnaro.jpgIndependence Day, July 4, 2011

What a ride! I'm so thankful for all the work our founding fathers did way back in the 18th century to get our very successful form of government off the ground.  They traveled all over the East Coast on horseback  --no autos, trains, airplanes, computers, ipads, smart phones, Facebook, etc. Amazing!

It was a sacrifice that took years and although we continue to evolve,  sometimes with harmonious and sometimes discordant interactions, we still reap the benefits today of a constitution that enables both liberty and responsibility for us fortunate citizens.  Happy Birthday America!

(Site Photos) MyTomatoPlantsJune2011.jpgMany communities are gethering for official celebrations with parades, picnics, bbq's and even fireworks.  Although the economy has slowed down the legal fireworks shows, ingenuity prevails and there will be explosive displays along the beaches.   Have a good time with your family plans!

We're pumping up our presence on Facebook with more frequent event posts.  We hope you will LIKE us so you can get new, important, fun calendar posts faster than our weekly newsletter.  If you like getting the newsletter, please tell your friends to register for it!

While out and about I overheard disparaging remarks about the rain.  I was fine with it because my tomatoes were protected from this abundance of water.

The Supreme Court affirmed the First Amendment right of children to purchase video games of their choice.  Guess what!  That puts it totally in our parent laps to guide our children wisely.  Just in case you allow your children to play them, we bring you some "expert" opinions and ideas.  I vote for equal time for books and outdoor activities!

Enjoy the long weekend, Parmalee

  The Headlines Were Dramatic!

Supreme Court: 'Video Games Qualify for First Amendment Protection'  In a 7-2 decision with an opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court effectively declared on Monday that video games can be afforded the same constitutional protections as visual art, film, music and other forms of expression.  continued>>> Techland

(Site Photos) VideoGames_Zuma.jpgBe a Gamer, Save the World, Videogames make players feel like their best selves. Why not give them real problems to solve?   We often think of immersive computer and videogames-like "FarmVille," "Guitar Hero" and "World of Warcraft"-as "escapist," a kind of passive retreat from reality. Many critics consider such games a mind-numbing waste of time, if not a corrupting influence. But the truth about games is very nearly the opposite. In today's society, they consistently fulfill genuine human needs that the real world fails to satisfy. More than that, they may prove to be a key resource for solving some of our most pressing real-world problems. continued>>> Wall Street Journal

Effects of Violent Video Games Proved by Research Study   A research study on the effects of violent video games has shown an increase of aggression. This is caused by playing a violent video game, and when a player keeps thinking about the game, the potential for aggression can last for as long as 24 hours or even more. continued>>>

Violent Video Games: Myths, Facts, and Unanswered Questions   Studies provide converging evidence that exposure to media violence is a significant risk factor for aggressive and violent behavior.

(Icons/Graphics) GameTimefromWSJ.jpg10 Benefits Of Video Games  Gaming both video and computer has become more than a fad, it is a part of life. First generation video game players have now become adult and carry their passion to adulthood. Parents and teachers worry about games having negative effects on children and a great deal has been written about games leading to violent behavior and addiction. However, all is not negative about gaming, studies by leading researchers have shown that video and computer games have many benefits: read all 10 benefits>>> by Timothy Rudon

Benefits of Video Games for Gifted Children    Many news reports on video games are quite negative, suggesting that the games can lead to any number of bad behaviors, including violence. However, video games can actually have a number of benefits for gifted children, for all children.

One benefit of playing video games is that they teach strategy and decision-making skills, which are important skills to have in today's competitive world. Even those games which seem to be nothing but violence (like Grand Theft Auto) teach those skills. In fact, it seems to be the challenge of finding the right strategies that make these games appealing, not the violence.  continued>>> By Carol Bainbridge, About.com Guide

Study: Active Video Games Are Good For Kids  Two new studies may provide some ammo for kids that want to get more time in front of the Wii or Kinect. According to researchers at Brigham Young University and University of Massachusetts, "exergaming" for 10 minutes can result in a workout as stimulating as walking three miles on a treadmill. continued>>> By Marc Perton

  Suki Blogs: Sugar Fixation

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgWe were standing in line on the Staten Island Ferry, New York City, land of great street food, and all my daughter wanted was a soda.

How did this happen?

My kids know the lecture: There are three reasons the American population has gotten so fat. One is screentime, which leads to lack of exercise. We took care of that one very early by cutting out all TV watching in our house. These days, we're so used to it, we forget to watch TV! Reason two is packaged food full of processed ingredients. In this case, we all love to cook and eat really great, healthy food, so the only problem we have to watch is my daughter's love of crackers. The third reason is soda.

So there we were, standing in line behind a young man well on his way down the road to obesity, and she's asking for a soda. I can't remember the day it started, but it probably went something like this. She asked for a Snapple. I really wanted a Snapple. Darn it, occasionally a woman deserves a big hit of sugar and caffeine in the middle of a hectic day. So I said, OK.

She's the sort of kid who watches for weakness in any structure, then pounces. She found a crack, and she dug a finger in.  continued>>>>

Daily Citron with Viva: Simple Uses for Old Papers

(Icons/Graphics) LemonGirl.jpgMy family's gotten into the recycling routine at home- we recycle paper, plastic, cans, plastic bags, and yard trimmings. It's hardly a feat to be proud of because it's so easy- our city's recycling service picks up all of these materials from our curb each week, with minimal sorting required of us.

Reusing materials (the more environmentally friendly alternative, since it avoids the energy consumption involved in recycling) has not been our strength, and I'm trying to work on that. Reusing obviously takes a little more effort and creativity that simply tossing an empty soda can into a recycling bin.

Here are three simple ways to reuse old paper such as old bills, draft documents we don't need anymore, and credit card offer letters:  continued >>>>
