(Event Calendar Logos) Trolley.jpgFamily field trips are my kind of fun and there are so many places to go right at home!

On a weekday I'm taking guests with children for a trolley ride from downtown to Main Beach.  The kids will play one of those noisy eye-hand pinball coordination games and have a few rides at the Boardwalk.  We'll get the wiggles out with a walk along the beach (Main Beach has sand dollars at the far end, especially if you get there early in the day. Next we'll have lunch at the "new" Casablanca (great cheeseburgers for the kids and salad for me) and catch the trolley back downtown.

On a total beach day we'll go to one of the locals' beaches.  And for sure we shall do one of the state park guided hikes.  By the way if you hike a lot with children, the course "Could You Survive in the Wild?" is offered this Saturday.

Saturday we shall visit the open house at Monterey Bay Aquarium's Research Institute because one of the kids wants to be an oceanographer!  It's only open to the public once a year and they put on an amazing "science fair" with demonstrations for all ages.

If you have teens with spare time and a slightly green thumb interest, the Arboretum can use volunteers on Wednesdays to help make succulent wreaths for the November holiday sale.

So many museums have "free days".  Find them here.  I just discovered the Cartoon Museum There's a Picasso exhibit at the de Young and I've yet to visit the Legion of Honor, all in San Francisco.  I'm good for about one museum per day, so I intend to space these out over the next few months.  I must add the Steinbeck Center to the list because it has a current exhibit on "The Hundred Languages of Children" and the Steinbeck part of the center is one of my favorites, especially the camper in which Steinbeck toured around the country with his dog Charlie.

You are camping out in your backyard this weekend, right? Tent, sleeping bags, a campfire, s'mores, raccoons et.al?  It's National Wildlife Federations' Great American Backyard Campout event.

Enjoy, Parmalee

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgA mom asked me this question:

"What do I do when my passive preschooler's aggressive friend hurts her? We love the friend, but I just don't know what to do in this situation. I don't want to discipline her, but I don't want to make what she did seem right."

I am unusually well-situated to answer this question. My first child was the disciplinarian's dream. As a preschooler, he was never the aggressor, and I was very tempted to think that the parents of the aggressors were doing something wrong.*

*I will add, in the spirit of full disclosure, one exception: On the first day of preschool, our 18-month-old son bit another child hard enough to break the skin. His teacher was a veteran, and she was not at all concerned. "This is a new experience for him. Let's wait and see." It never happened again.

Our daughter, on the other hand... continued>>>>

(Icons/Graphics) LemonGirl.jpgOrdering take-out instead of making dinner at home can be a major drain on income. So, why do I still do it? It's almost always the same culprit- failure to plan ahead. As a working mom I'm frazzled at the end of a work day, so if I haven't already planned out what I'm going to cook, and have all the ingredients stocked, then ordering take-out ends up being the default position.

But, I've gotten a lot better about preventing this, and it's because I've implemented 1) Monthly Meal Planning and 2) Weekly Grocery Shopping. Let me explain: continue >>>>>

 Family Fun on the Trolley

(Event Calendar Logos) DowntownTrolleyMap.jpg(Event Calendar Logos) Trolley.jpg

Visitors and residents will be able to catch a ride on Santa Cruz's colorful replica trolley with real wood benches and wood and brass trim inside and out. It's the best way to get back and forth between the beach and downtown and avoid parking and traffic.

The trolley will run daily during the summer and on weekends in the fall from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, with stops downtown at the historic Del Mar Theater and at the beach near the entrance to the Santa Cruz Wharf.

The trolley will complete its round trip every 15 to 20 minutes and costs just 25 cents to ride.

The Santa Cruz Trolley Consortium is a project of the Downtown Association and The Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce, The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Barry Swensen Builders.
