(Photos General) Summer_ChildinWaterFountain.jpgToday is Summer Solstice and the temperature will likely be a perfect 75 or so.  Considered the official start of summer, it is the longest day of the year here in the Northern hemisphere.  Love it!

Whether you have a dog, want to have a dog or like dogs and cannot have a dog, you can enjoy a day with dogs and their owners at the annual C-Dog Festival.

Looking for an easy and impressive dinner?  I just tried Fresh Prep Kitchens' ginger salmon.  It's so good I'm going to order it again!

It happens at all stages, from babies through teens (and on into adulthood) --declarations of independence! The desire to grow up and become independent is natural for the majority of us, as it was for our country 236 years ago. Today we are privileged to live in a society that values individual freedoms and while we may disagree on issues, we can voice and write our opinions.

On July 4th we celebrate our country's birthday.  Hillsdale College has a suggestion for adding meaning to our July 4th celebrations.

(Special Event Images / Graphics) DeclarationofIndependenceengravedcopy.jpg"Here's a simple idea: set aside a little time and read the Declaration of Independence out loud. What if all Americans, nationwide, took a few minutes to do this on the 4th of July? This year, join with Hillsdale College and do exactly that - read the Declaration! In fact, we would like to make this the largest-ever nationwide public reading of the Declaration in American history!

On the 4th of July, you probably gather with your family and friends to celebrate at parties, backyard barbecues, and fireworks displays. Too often we do this without remembering the significance of this uniquely American holiday, our nation's birthday.

On July 4th, 1776 our Founding Fathers did something extraordinary. They didn't just risk their political careers. They didn't just risk their businesses and livelihoods. They literally risked their lives not only for their freedom, but for that of their families and their posterity."

Let's remember and share with our children the precious gift of liberty our Founders gave us.  Download a copy of the Declaration of Independence.  Read aloud short sections and ask the children, who themselves are stretching to achieve independence, what this means to them.  I wish I could hear their ideas!

Enjoy the creativity, Parmalee

Viva: Cash-Only Challenge: Part I: The Accidental Players

(Photos General) VivaGravatar.jpg

My husband and I are finding ourselves accidental players in an unofficial game called the Three Month Cash-Only Challenge. This challenge was devised by money-saving expert Crystal Paine in her upbeat personal finance book, The Money Saving Mom's Budget. She challenged readers to do away with credit AND debit cards for 3 months, paying for all purchases with actual, physical CASH. Paine maintains that a cash-only lifestyle is second-to-none in requiring people to make the hard budgeting and spending decisions that are necessary to balance their budgets, and ultimately, to start saving their money for things that are truly important to them instead of frittering it away on miscellaneous purchases. (Incidentally, she does allow a few exceptions where debit cards can be used- when the purchase is online, or to pay a recurring bill like the electric bill, garbage bill, etc.)

But as much as my husband and I are committed to improving our financial situation, we were uninterested in participating in the challenge ourselves- we use credit cards to pay for virtually everything, but we always pay off our balances in full every month.

"We don't have a credit card problem- we paid off our credit card debt," I said to my husband.

"And if we stopped using credit cards, we wouldn't get credit card rewards anymore, " my husband pointed out. (And that is the trump card right there- I am addicted to credit card rewards- we earn $25-$50/month in free gift cards, and most of the time it is my only way to get a shopping fix. What would I do without my shopping fix??)

"If we pay off our credit card purchases in full every month, then it's really no different than using cash, right?"

And so, we concluded that the Cash-Only Challenge was unnecessary for responsible people like us.

Then, why do we find ourselves unwilling participants in the challenge right now? Well... because we want to... Read more about why>>>>>

(Photos General) Animal_Platypus.jpgPresenting --The Platypus

Just saying "platypus" makes you smile, doesn't it. You look at this animal, and the smile gets wider. You read about it and your smile turns into a grin. This is just such a weird creature. I saw some in the Australian wilderness, and they are very shy and quiet. They rarely breed in captivity. As a result, there are lots of gaps in our knowledge...  Smile and read more>>>

Twilight Creatures

(Photos General) Animal_Rabbit.jpgThere are creatures that shun full sunlight - and no, they are not vampires. For they also shun full darkness. They are neither nocturnal (night) nor diurnal (day) - they are crepuscular. You will see these creature at twilight and dawn. You may also see these creatures reveling on full moon nights, or creeping around on very cloudy days. Some creatures are active during either dawn or dusk . Some are active at both times.

You may ask - what kind of creature lives in half-light? How about those skunks? And porcupines, too...Read more>>>>

  Suki:: Nine Pet Parenting Peeves

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpg

I have been cleaning out the files on my computer and found this piece that I wrote when my daughter was in preschool.... she's nine now. So it's old news, but what's amazing is how fresh it is. I still agree with all of it! I think I stopped writing because I'd called the piece "10 Pet Parenting Peeves" and just couldn't find a 10th. So I publish it here in its original form.1. Your child is in constant danger from strangers

A well-meaning friend of ours once expressed shock that we allowed our son to play alone in the front yard. "Aren't you afraid of someone coming by and snatching him?" he asked. "Well...no!" we answered. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, about .01% of abductions "stereotypical" kidnappings, i.e. stranger abductions. That leaves us with the sad fact that if you want to take care of your children, you should be most suspicious of the people around you. Most children are kidnapped because of... Read more >>>>
