  Magical Nighttime

(AAA_Feb 2015) Book_BrightNightStarryCity.jpg

Remember that mixture of curiosity and mystery about nighttime, the feeling that we were missing out on what the grownups were doing!?  It's real, that fascination with the night.

At the end of the day we tuck the children in and revel in some personal adult time.

Yet on a few occasions we make the beautiful, mysterious, romantic night special for them. We take them to a star gazing session at one of our state parks; help them identify constellations and join them in imagining who/what's out there; go for a nighttime "kitty walk" (beware skunk kitties!); toss a pebble in the air near a tree to entice the bats to fly forth; let them stay outside as the fireflies signal with lights; get into the tent with them for their first backyard sleepout, complete with flashlight and books, go to the beach for an evening campfire and so on.  As darkness descends, a relaxation and softness arrives, a special quiet, reflective, magical time to share with our children.

(AAA_Feb 2015) Book_WaitTilltheMoonIsFull.jpg"There was once a little raccoon who wanted to go out in the night -- to know an owl, to see if the moon is a rabbit, and to find out how dark is the dark. But his mother said, "Wait. Wait till the moon is full." So the little raccoon waited and wondered, while the moon got bigger and bigger and bigger. Until at last, on a very special evening, the moon was full..."

Wait Til the Moon is Full by Margaret Wise Brown, was my youngest's favorite book.  He wanted it read to him over and over.  I tried hiding it and offering another choice.  No go!  One night I turned it into an operetta.  Oh my, now I was really in for it!  Steve explains why children want the same story over and over.  Go ahead, sing that favorite story; ham it up and have fun!

Have a wonderful Father's Day all you wonderful Dads.  We found a list of 100 great ways to be a dad.  The good news "You do not have to be perfect"!  More good news:  "You are already doing some of the "100".  Pat yourself on the back and enjoy your day.

Steve: That Same Story Again and Again

(AAA_Feb 2015) SteveSpitalny.jpgAs I have mentioned before, I love books. I want children to grow up loving books too. If you want your children to become members of the world of readers, they need to see you reading, both to them and reading for your own pleasure and learning. Young children learn by imitating.

Books are an essential part of life and starting in early childhood there needs to be plenty of experience of books and reading. This can nurture a love of books that can last throughout life. Every bedtime deserves a story to help send the child off to dreamland. Everyday is the right day for a story.

You may have noticed your three- or four-year-old saying, immediately upon completion of a story, "Tell it again." Or when you sit down together for a storybook, she asks for the same one as yesterday. And again.....

"How boring," you think to yourself. "Not that one again."

You have a developed intellect. Your intellect always wants more and different experiences. The young child has an undeveloped intellect and therefore cannot get bored. Instinctively she is asking for something supportive of her developing neurology which is repetition. Repetition supports developing neural pathways and the myelination process. So put aside your boredom and learn to enjoy the same story again. And again... Read the rest>>>>>>
