Christine offers some fun science topics.  Try introducing them to the dinner conversation.  Which is the highest mountain and why?  What are rogue waves? Good conversation makes for pleasant memories.

(Photos General) ContraDancing2.jpgHave you ever been Contra Dancing?  Beginners are very welcome and get lots of coaching by "pros".  This is a great activity for families with teens and tweens and guaranteed to turn a grump into a cheerful person.  Here's a link to the Dancing section of our calendar.

Now is a great time to get outdoors and explore our varied parks.   Park rangers and docents love to share their knowledge with you as they take you on interesting hikes or walks.  There's an activity level for your family!   Keep checking our calendar for new entries and remember, you can select "Park Activities" to isolate those events.

Have you visited the Museum of Natural History recently?  This is the last weekend to visit the exhibit of over 60 works in oil, pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, and digital media.  It includes a special Illustration Station where visitors can try their own hand at illustrating Museum specimens with a variety of media. They are offering two art, science and adventure camps for children and fascinating Super Saturdays this summer.

We have one set of four tickets left for the Linda Arnold Concert at the Simcha Carnival! Enter to win these tickets to the June 3rd Linda Arnold Concert! Send us a brief email about your favorite section on SantaCruzParent.com or tell us about a business you found in our newsletters! info@santacruzparent.com

Will you be taking the family on some local hikes?  We found a wonderful site, scoutlists.com, that helps you prepare for outdoor adventures.  By clicking on climate, activity or season conditions you will arrive at a complete list of what to bring for safety, comfort and a good time. Viva has found some cute, free, printable cards for children to give to teachers.  Help your child mention one favorite lesson or memory! If your children have experienced an especially inspiring teacher, tell them why.

At the end of the school year everyone is experiencing some "burnout", children, teachers and parents.  It's a good time to be extra supportive.

  Suki: Cover Up!

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpg

OK, it's official. Although the equinox is not happening for some time yet, it's summer in California. We even had a lovely, sunny day on Memorial Day! Knowing that the rest of California would be on our beach, dropping their garbage, smoking their cigarettes, and running into each other with their boogie boards, we chose to go down in the woods. It was lovely, warm, and free of distractions.

A beautiful Memorial Day in the creek. We were largely in the shade, and some of us had more success in keeping our pants on than others...

Our play was largely in the shade, but this was probably a day that lots of kids got their first sunburn of the season. Many of us who are parents now remember a time when it was considered somewhat "fun" to get your "first sunburn." You showed off how red you were, exclaimed about how it was peeling, and watched hopefully for a tan underneath. If you're as pale as I am, that tan never materialized, but you hoped nonetheless.

We know better now, or we should...... Read more...

Science Fun with Christine: Rogue Waves and Highest Mountains

(Photos General) RogueWaves.jpgRogue waves are one of those things that are much more interesting to read about than to experience. Ships have disappeared when they met these weird phenomena.

What defines a rogue wave? These are also called "extreme storm waves," although they may occur without a storm. They are greater than twice the size of surrounding waves, and may come from an unexpected direction - different than other surrounding waves. These waves are much steeper than the average wave. This picture shows such a wave coming at a ship. The ship is at least 30 feet high. The wave is towering above.

Rogue waves have been known to mariners since ...read more>>>

(Photos General) Denali.jpgHow can the highest mountain not be Everest? Didn't lots of people get out tape measures and carefully mark out inches, etc?

If you look at a list of the highest or tallest mountains, there are lots of mountains that claim that title. It all depends on how you define "highest." Those tricky words again...

Here are some definitions and the associated peaks...read more>>>
