  Kids Like Shakespeare

(0 A July 2019) KidsLikeShakespeare.jpgWe were watching Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," perhaps a little over the children's heads, ages 7, 8 1/2 and10, yet they seemed enchanted. Suddenly the clouds opened up and poured on us. Most everyone got up and hurried out. Who was left watching the sword fight scene? The kids in the audience! The actors carried on until one turned to the children, "Sorry kids, thanks for coming, gotta go!" Don't underestimate Shakespeare's appeal to children. Take them to experience some mighty fine drama this summer with Santa Cruz Shakespeare.

The libraries are brimming with special events. Check them out!

Please share our newsletter with new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events!

Have a wonderful weekend with family and friends!  Parmalee

The Comedy of Errors By William Shakespeare ~  Jul 23-Sep 1Tickets

One of Shakespeare's earliest works, this youthful and exuberant play pairs two sets of identical twins, matching physical comedy with mistaken identity for maximum hilarity.

Egeon and his wife are separated in a shipwreck at sea, each carrying one of their identical twin daughters and one of their daughters' two servants (also identical twins). Egeon, his daughter Antiphola, and her servant Domia end up in Syracuse. Thirty-three years later, however, they unwittingly converge with their long lost family members at Ephesus,a port town at war with Syracuse. Egeon is captured and led to jail...

(0 A July 2019) WintersTale.jpgThe Winter's Tale By William Shakespeare ~ Aug 2-Sep 1 ~ Tickets

Two kings, two kingdoms, and terrible jealousy set the stage for tragedy. But what happens next? Weaving fairy-tale elements into one of his late romances, Shakespeare explores the magic of healing and redemption.

Leontes, King of Sicilia, is hosting his childhood best friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia, for a visit of several months. Leontes is married to Hermione; they have a young son, Mamillius, and Hermione is pregnant with their second child.

And not Shakespeare, but not to be missed...

(0 A July 2019) PridePrejudiceAction.jpgPride and Prejudice

By Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Jane Austen ~ Jul 9-Aug 31 ~ Tickets

Jane Austen's most famous story is retold by eight actors playing multiple roles. Fast-paced, off-beat, and irreverent, Kate Hamill's adaptation will wriggle its way into your heart.  With four unmarried daughters and with the family property entailed to a male heir, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet live in a rural society with few eligible bachelors. But a Mr. Bingley has just rented a nearby estate . . .

A Very Nice Local Teen/Train Story

(0 A July 2019) FernCreekOpenHouseAug2019.jpgHe was nine years old, patiently waiting his turn at the train table controls at the annual interactive Trains Show located in the MAH Lobby. Men from the Over-the-Hill Gang had set up the trains and were manning the running of them in shifts. He stayed and stayed, while his mom, as if she knew she could not pull him away, sat in a nearby chair with her bag of things to do. He came back the next day and the next and engaged one of the men, Eric, in so many questions that he was invited to come in the control center with the men to help run the trains. Thus began a friendship, mentor and mentee, that led to 10 years of developing the famous train yard at 419 Ocean View Avenue, Santa Cruz. Trevor went off to college, but always returned to work on the model train project and recently began working at Roaring Camp.

(0 A July 2019) FernCreek_MenAndYoungMen.jpgYesterday I read about their annual open house. You should go! The yard is magical. You know how kids enjoy miniatures. The entire yard --front, back and sides-- is a miniature series of towns and businesses connected by train tracks and working trains.

There's more to the story that I didn't know. Here it is, in Trevor's own words.

"Persistence and hard work make dreams a reality, and that is exactly what happened today!

(0 A July 2019) TrevorFiremanJuly242019.jpgSince I was a little kid, I have always wanted to be a steam locomotive fireman at Roaring Camp Railroads. I started learning how to fire when I was 10 years old. The crew would hide me from management in order to teach me how to fire while I was not old enough to be on crew. I was booted off the engine more times than I want to admit, but I kept coming back, as much as they may have wanted to get rid of me sometimes.

I worked my way up to conductor last summer after working in the shop and on the track. Today, my dream of over 10 years finally came true.

At long last, and finally with the blessing of the management, I was turned loose today as a locomotive fireman! I have been learning off and on for years, and today marked my first solo trip.

(0 A July 2019) Trevor1.jpgI still have A LOT to learn, as you are never done learning when it comes to steam, but I could not be happier to finally be out on the engine! I have a lot of people to thank who have gotten me to this point, the wonderful crew who has trained me in the art of firing, the management of Roaring Camp who has trusted me in firing over one of the most challenging railroads to operate a steam locomotive on, and of course all of the people who have supported me along the way who have nothing to do with the railroad itself. It has been a long road to get here but I am finally happy to be one of the many who carries on the tradition of steam railroading at Roaring Camp."

Like trains? Follow Trevor at Fern Creek and Western Garden Railroad and for sure go to the Open House August 9am-3pm.
