  Colored Pencil Art

(0 July 2017) YvettefrogLilia10.jpgOne attribute of colored pencils as an art medium is their easy portability.  Even better, they are not messy!

I hope you enjoy the colored pencil advice we've gathered for your children and you!

If you think you're not artistic enough to sketch a flower or seashell, leaf or bird, there are myriad sources of free coloring sheets and books available. Color with the children.  Discuss colors. Relax into creativity. Take art classes.  Have fun!

Wherever you go, bring the colored pencils! In fact, a great place to go with your pencils and sketch book is Seymour Marine Center where you can draw sharks (and other amazing sea critters) during Shark Week starting Saturday the 22nd.

(2 Buttons) Button_Weekend.jpgPlease recommend our newsletter to new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events! We cannot fit them all into this newsletter.  Check the online calendar.

Have a great summer weekend with the family!  Parmalee

Drawing by Lilia, age 10, who enjoys classes at The Art Factory, Aptos.

(0 July 2017) ColorCollections_Architecture.jpgOver 100 Museums Invite You to "Color Their Collections" with Free Adult Coloring Books

By Sara Barnes on July 14, 2017

"The adult coloring craze isn't just a passing fad. Our love of filling in black-and-white line drawings goes back as far as the 18th century; it's only recently, however, that the adult coloring book trend was reinvigorated and seen as a way to unwind from our busy, connected lives. Bridging the gap between history and contemporary culture is the Color Our Collections campaign, in which libraries and museums from around the world invite you to reimagine their acquisitions in vibrant hues.

(0 July 2017) ColorCollections_Botannical.jpgOrganized by The New York Academy of Medicine Library, there are over 100 institutions that have compiled free adult coloring books as well as free coloring book pages for download. Each reflects the materials that they hold in their collections. The range of participating organizations and their available subject matter is impressive; from rare books to scientific diagrams to ornate Art Nouveau, there is truly something for everyone-and hours upon hours of relaxing entertainment.

Over 100 institutions participate in the creative campaign."

Best Colored Pencil Sets for Kids!

By Cheryl Trowbridge on April 9, 2014

(0 July 2017) Prang1.jpgWhen it comes to buying art supplies, how much does your budget influence your buying decisions? Do you sometimes choose your cheapest option just because, well, it's the cheapest? There's such a range of quality when it comes to student grade colored pencils and the difference in price doesn't always make up for the difference in quality. The next time you buy colored pencils, you could be better off spending a little more. Here's why...>>>

8 Best Colored Pencil Sets for Coloring Book Enthusiasts and Professional Artists

By Sara Barnes on July 14, 2017

(0 July 2017) colored-pencils-holbein-8.jpgColored pencils are often associated with childhood, but with the adult coloring book craze, it's clear that grown-ups like to use them, too. These tools, however, can do much more than color inside lines. Artists regularly use colored pencils in their drawings because they offer a range of possibilities-especially in their hues. While many professional sets include a bevy of beautiful colors, you can layer them to create even more dimension in your work.

Determining the best colored pencils can be a challenge. Ultimately it comes down to your personal preference, but to get you started on the right track, we've identified some of the best pencils to try. These brands are available to purchase online, so it's easy to test out a few different pencils without breaking the bank. It's important to find your favorites; by taking the time to hone your tools, you'll make producing your art more enjoyable.  Read more for an excellent discussion of which colored pencil set is best for you>>>>

(0 July 2017) YvetteHummingIris16.jpgColored pencils are a wonderful medium for artists of all ages and abilities, especially for those who love to work on a small scale.

They provide great control, vivid colors and in some cases, are water-soluble and can turn into a wash of color with the stroke of a wet brush.

(0 July 2017) YvetteKiera12Poppies.jpgStudents may find they've done a lovely pencil drawing, then try to paint it and become very frustrated. Colored pencils avoid that frustration all together because you know exactly where that color (point) is going to land. Adding a little water via a good brush to achieve the effect of water colors is a good intermediate step in learning water color techniques.

(0 July 2017) YvettecatJillian11.jpgColored pencils are also great for artists on the go. They're easy to transport, mess free, and fit budgets of all sizes. From sketch books to coloring books, colored pencils are a staple in the art kit of kids and visual artists everywhere! From handmade birthday cards to architectural renderings, colored pencils are for everyone! Visit our wonderful local art supply stores today to start or build your colored pencil collection.

(0 July 2017) YvetteContois2.jpgYvette Contois is a local mom, art teacher and artist. You can find her and other artists at The Art Factory Studio in Aptos sharing their skills and encouraging budding young artists who love creating favorite images and don't want to leave when time is up.  There are a few spaces left in week long theme classes.

(0 July 2017) ElainesTree.jpgMy friend and artist, Elaine, does a live demonstration of how to draw a tree using 140 lb water color paper and a special colored pencil called Sketch & Wash Pencil (General).

She adds color with Neocolor Aquarelle Water Soluble Wax Pastels (moss green and Indian red).

To blend, she uses a Creative Mark Mimik Kolinsky Professional Artist Synthetic Sable Brush. Elaine favors it because it holds water and springs back into shape.

Watch her demo here.
