(Graphics) CampingCartoon.jpgIt's the middle of the summer and for some of you it's time to re-visit the Summer Camp Guide and/or our Camp Calendar.

If you are traveling anywhere this summer, whether to the local beach, a day trip, a long road trip or a flight across the country, Viva has thought of everything you need and more with her checklists for travelers.  Checklists can engage your children in the preparations and save both misery and money on the trip.

Do you have a budding entrepreneur in your family?  Are your children's toy chests overflowing with outgrown treasures?  The Discovery Learning Center is having a fundraising yard sale this Saturday and invites anyone, any age to participate by selling or buying! Cost:$2 donation requested for kids wanting to sell their own creations; $5 minimum donation requested for regular sellers; Free to buyers.

By the way, it's worth a visit to the Discovery Learning Center to see the variety of free and modest-cost classes they offer.

It's one of those busy weekends with numerous overlapping activities.  We couldn't fit them all into this newsletter so be sure to visit the Friday, Saturday or Sunday listings on the Events Calendar.  Remember, you can isolate by category or date or both!  For example look at all the park activities!

Archeologists are a special kind of detective.  Not only do they unearth old artifacts and piece together stories of who lived when, where they came from and how old the cultures were, they fight about who's right.  Christine gives us an insight into who came to the Americas, when they came and how modern science is helping to verify or debunk theories.

Have a great summer weekend and enjoy digging into the past should the opportunity arise, Parmalee

Suki: When Mom Needs Help, the Kids Rise to the Occasion!

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpgI once wrote a piece called "Living One-Handed"about feeling like everything is twice as difficult when you have a baby to haul around. My kids are big now and I couldn't haul them around even if I wanted to. In fact, my 13-year-old has just passed me in height-his shoe size passed mine over a year ago.

So I knew I really didn't have an excuse anymore, and I finally set up the inevitable: surgery for my long time carpal tunnel syndrome.

It's great to have someone to blame for the misfortune in our lives: I can blame my kids for this one! Each time I was pregnant, I blew up like a balloon and my hands started to buzz. The first time, I was alarmed but found out that this is common and usually disappears along with the extra pounds. The second time, it didn't go away (and neither, come to think of it, did some of the pounds!).

I kept saying that when things got less complicated I would get the problem fixed, but somehow...Continue>>>

Viva: Packing List Part IV: Road Trip

(Photos General) VivaGravatar.jpg

A road trip packing checklist ensures that you'll be well prepared for your next road trip.  I've created a free, downloadable checklist in Microsoft Word that is customizable so that you can modify it to fit your needs.  This checklist focuses exclusively on the items that are specific to a road trip- for packing checklists for clothes and other general travel items see the General Packing Checklist and the Toiletries Packing Checklist.  For kid-specific items, see the Kids Packing Checklist.

Items that are unique to a road trip packing checklist include:

  • Sporting Gear (you probably do at least one of the following on a road trip: swimming, fishing, hiking, golf, tennis, camping... and they all require extra gear beyond your regular clothes)
  • Snack Foods and Drinks that can be eaten during the ride (so that you're not tempted to spend money on snacks at gas stations)
  • Breakfast Food and Drinks for after you reach your destination (I'll explain the benefits of this below)... Read more!>>>

Science Fun with Christine: Humanity and America - the Fight!

(Photos General) ArtifactsfromClovisNM.jpgOnce upon a time, in the 1930s, some archeologists discovered artifacts and animal remains in a cave near Clovis, New Mexico. They also found some distinct spear points, now named Clovis points. These all indicated an early human population here in North America around 13,000 years ago. The prevailing theory was that a single group of people came from Siberia, across the Bering Strait to Alaska (there was a land bridge) and then populated the rest of the Americas. Clovis remains were found in many other locations. The points were eventually replaced by other tools, and the Clovis culture disappeared.

Archeologists kept digging in other places. The tools for dating materials improved. And something interesting happened. New sites appeared that seemed to either pre-date Clovis or exist at the same time - and these cultures were distinctly NOT CLOVIS!! ....  Read more>>>
