(Graphics) NoJunk.jpgHave I told you that I have not watched tv for 20+ years --probably a hundred times.  I had stopped because I wanted time for other interests.

A few weeks ago, out of curiosity, I watched a few contemporary sitcoms, the kind that hook you so you'll watch the next show. I was in culture shock; I realized that I had missed 20 years of racy (race to the bottom) pop culture.  Recognizing garbage, I quickly ended that experiment.  Give me an excellent  book or movie to foster imagination, inspire creativity and stimulate thinking.  That's a positive for adults and children!

Suki hits one of my hot buttons this week --Quality Literature for Kids.  Pam answers questions on eggs.  Love those natural, pastel colored eggs!  Viva shares a thrifty recipe for candied walnuts.

(Photos General) Animal_HarborSeal_SantaCruzParent.jpgThis week's museum offers an outdoor adventure.  I am in awe of the interconnectedness between man and animal.  I was once joined in wave riding by a curious harbor seal.  Daily I experience the scolding of the stellar jays.  Evenings bring on bold raccoons, shy possums and busy skunks.  Katie cornered a toddler skunk last night.  After I got her inside I took a flashlight out and shined it on the little guy.  He stomped his feet, raised his tail, then turned his back to me, but he couldn't activate his spray.  That is the second time ever that I thought a skunk was cute.

The chef at Casablanca Inn & Bistro works magic with veggies so if you're headed to the Boardwalk for Friday night concerts, Cirque Polynesia or 1907/Pepsi nights, give yourself a gourmet treat.  I had mine with pan seared Branzino sea bass.  Yum!

Have a great weekend, Parmalee

  Museums: Elkhorn Slough

(Photos General) ElkhornSlough_OtterMotherandPup.jpgWhile Elkhorn Slough doesn't quite fit the traditional museum category, it certainly offers an interactive experience in nature's own museum.

Too many times have I driven by on my way from here to there and said, "Next time I'll visit the slough."  Finally I gave myself a morning there, and it was worth it!  I went early.  It was quiet except for bird calls, splashes, chugarooms, the rustling of grasses and a slight sighing breeze.  Perfect!

"Elkhorn Slough is a meandering waterway located on the Monterey Bay near the town of Moss Landing. Most people visit the area to go birding, hiking, kayaking, shopping, or fishing.

The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve provides your best opportunity for hiking in the watershed. This family-friendly Reserve has 5 miles of trails, a visitor center with great exhibits, helpful staff, nature store, and guided tours. Open Wednesday - Sunday, 9:00am - 5pm.

(Photos General) ElkhornSlough-DecoratedSeal_SantaCruzParent.jpgKayak and Boating Access
The Moss Landing Harbor provides all your needs for accessing the bay with your larger craft. For kayaks and small boats there are two ways to access the Slough area: the Harbor boat ramp and the Kirby Park boat ramp. We maintain detailed information about kayaking in the Slough, but you can also contact the kayak shops and tour companies in the area.

Birding Opportunities
Within the watershed there are many birding hotspots to checkout. We have put together some resources for birders to help plan your visit.

A joy and challenge to photograph, the Elkhorn Slough is a great place for photographers of all skill levels. Check out our photo contest winners, enter your favorite slough photo, download wallpapers for your computer or phone, and be inspired to get out there.

Moss Landing
Besides otters, the town of Moss Landing is home to many antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. It is also the home base of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and MBARI, Monterey Bay Aquarium's research facility. Fisherman have called this harbor their home for centuries and you can charter a boat, take a tour of the Slough, go whale watching or just purchase some of the freshest fish in the area here."

Suki Blogs: On the Way to 'Z': Writing for Reading Kids

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpg

I've been reading a lot of kids' books these days-more than usual. Lately, I read kids' books to my eight year old, and science books to my twelve year old. But for the last few weeks, I've been reading books assigned for a workshop on writing for children that I'm taking this weekend.

In our family, reading is big. In the time when other families watch TV, we read. My husband and I love reading our old favorites with our kids. We love reading aloud and still do even though both of them are readers on their own. We listen to books on tape in the car. We take stacks of books out of the library each week.

So I have been interested in the books they chose to have us discuss for the workshop. Obviously, they chose the books as good examples of books in each of the categories that children's book publishers separate books into. The problem I have is, my kids simply don't fit into those categories, and neither do many of the kids we know. When I read many books that are supposed to appeal to kids their age, I am simply perplexed.

A while back, I wrote about the problem of finding books for young gifted readers on the Write4Kids blog. With one exception, the books I read for the workshop highlight the problems we have in finding great literature for our kids.    continued>>>>

Daily Citron with Viva: Candied Walnut Recipe

(Graphics) LemonGirl.jpgIndulging in food is one of life's great pleasures. But, indulgences can be expensive, and are often the first thing to get booted out of our budget when we need to save money. Latte at work? Nixed, to save $70/month. Pizza delivery every Friday night? Nixed, to save $100/month. Make enough of these budget cuts and I start to feel deprived.

That's why I seize upon indulgences that happen to be inexpensive- they allow me to experience something decadent, without hurting my wallet too much. I guess I would call them frugal indulgences. One of them is candied walnuts- they are truly decadent, and it costs about half as much to make them at home than to buy them at the store.  Here's how to make candied walnuts: ...   continued >>>>

Pam Blogs: A Word About Eggs

(Photos General) PeacefulValleyFarm_Eggs.jpg(Photos General) PamCarrico.jpgLately I have had some really interesting questions about chickens and eggs. Some from kids, who might be expected to not know the facts, but even from adults. It just goes to show, again, how far away from our food sources we have become. so, a few answers for those who may not know...

1. What color is the egg inside this green shell? How about this brown one?

2. How are your eggs different from the ones at the store?

3. Can hens have babies without a rooster?

4. Why do you keep a rooster?

5. Can I take home one of the eggs and hatch it?  ANSWERS!>>>>
