  Rodeo Days

(0 A July 2018) Cowgirl.jpgAre you going to the California Rodeo in Salinas? It's a western tradition and a great fundraiser for local charities.

Especially fun are the opening parades in Old Town Salinas, first the Kiddie Parade Saturday, July 14, 6:30pm followed by the Colmo del Rodeo Parade at 8pm.

It's a great time to go berry picking with the kids! If you visit the Arboretum you might see Quail families going about their bug searches!

Enjoy the weekend with the family! Parmalee

  Message from the Arboretum

(0 A July 2018) QuailCrossing.jpgWatch out, it's quail season!

Check out this sign our friendly neighbors in Aptos put up to alert cars passing by. Please be careful and alert for our feathered friends!

The egg-laying season for California quail, our beloved state (0 A July 2018) QuailandChicks.jpgbird, ended in late May, early June. Therefore, hatching will ensue from now through August. Catching a glimpse of the freshly hatched chicks is quite a treat, but be mindful to give them plenty of room and admire from afar!

Did you know that female quail have been known to engage in the practice of "egg dumping"? This means that they lay their eggs (up to 28 in a brood!) in nests already occupied by other birds.

  Tick Bite Prevention!

You probably don't want guinea fowl or possums in your yards even though they are voracious tick consumers.  Yet you do not want to attract ticks!

(0 A July 2018) chrysanthemum.jpg"To repel ticks, try spraying your clothes with a pesticide that mimics mums (chemical version of chrysanthemums). When ticks come into contact with clothing sprayed with permethrin, research shows, they quickly become incapacitated and are unable to bite. There's new evidence to support a decades-old strategy for preventing the tick bites that lead to all sorts of nasty diseases, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The remedy involves spraying your clothing with permethrin - a pesticide that's chemically similar to extracts of the flowering chrysanthemum plant." Read more of this NPR article>>>

For treatment of shoes, clothing, nets, gear and tents (Not to be applied to skin)  ~  Lasts up to 2 weeks through several washes  ~  Repels and kills mosquitoes, ticks and mites  ~  Odorless when dry  ~ Spray at any angle
