  Happy Birthday America!

(AAA_Feb 2015) 4thJuly_PaintingbyMauriceHansen.jpgWhat makes a great Independence Day weekend? A hike in the woods, swimming for hours, watching a parade, eating hamburgers and hot dogs, playing with friends, decorating cupcakes, not using cell phones, reading a book in the hammock, catching fish, celebrating a birthday & watching fireworks!

Imagine! Movies that hold the interest of both kids and parents! Suki found one.

Two thumbs up

I have to admit that I'm generally loathe to go to popular children's movies. I am deeply grateful when another parent offers to take my child. And now that my youngest is old enough to go on her own, it takes a lot to get me to spend my dollars and my precious two hours on something that will, at best, bore me, and at worst, offend me.

But this is one film I can heartily recommend to parents like me who are done with stupid kid films. I left the theater feeling like I'd actually received more than I paid for, an unusual result of watching a hit summer movie. Read Suki's take on "Inside Out">>>>>

  Christine: Keeping Your Kids Hydrated

I am always bugging my 8-year-old son to drink more water. He always assured me that he is drinking enough, but I am never looking when he drinks. Now a researcher from the University of Arkansas has verified the urine color scale works for children. This scale has been successfully used (AAA_Feb 2015) Christine_UrineChart.jpgby adults for many years. Since my son is an artist I can't wait to get him to see the chart.

The chart matches urine color with dehydration levels. Although this chart has been used for adults, scientists hadn't tested it with children. Now we know that the same chart works with children.

Basically, what comes out as urine is a mixture of water and urine. Urine is dark and water is clear. A lighter color urine means more water is in the system. The urine chart has been developed over the years to show the proper color for good hydration.

Show this to your kids. The researchers tested this with 210 kids and found they could accurately self-assess their own hydration level. Maybe I can stop bugging my own child.

Chistine is a local mom and scientist who makes science easy to understand.  You can find her blog here.

Looking for an adult read for the weekend?  I'll be reading Independence Lost: Lives on the Edge of the American Revolution.

"Over the last decade, award-winning historian Kathleen DuVal has revitalized the study of early America's marginalized voices. Now, in Independence Lost, she recounts an untold story as rich and significant as that of the Founding Fathers: the history of the Revolutionary Era as experienced by slaves, American Indians, women, and British loyalists living on Florida's Gulf Coast."
