Rainy days are opportunities for adventure! You never can tell what you'll find when you go for a walk --bright red mushrooms at the local park, the first daffodils, slugs, little creatures hiding under toadstools, a dog in a raincoat, a friend also sporting good splashing boots, some squishy mud, raindrops on leaves.
Sure, the rainy weather makes us want to "nest" inside with board and card games, books, movies, cooking together but no outdoor activity can lead to cabin fever for kids, pets and adults! Can the kids play hockey or basketball in the garage? Go for a rain walk? Go roller skating, swimming? Look for seaglass and storm treasures on the beach? Walk a couple of blocks to the library?
We were downtown in the rain, about to enter Artisans to see Marie Gabrielle's paintings. We overheard a mom having a little talk with her 4 year old, "This store has beautiful and delicate art that could break if we touched it. What do you plan to do with your hands so they won't accidentally touch something?" They only stayed a little while, but her little boy was totally in control the entire visit, with his hands behind his back and quite proud of himself. Go ahead, take children to art galleries and museums, give them parameters, and stay just long enough.
Speaking of getting out and about, we found an interesting article (see columns) correlating the sequence of time of lunch, time of recess and amount of teaching time in schools. If you think this makes sense, share it with your friends, teachers and school administrators.
