Martin Luther King, Education and Parenting

(Holidays) MLK_IHaveADream.jpgI'm writing this on Monday, Martin Luther King Day.  I just read a tribute to Dr. King that expanded my knowledge about him, especially about his education and the subjects he chose to study.  "We celebrate Dr. King's birth because he was among the greatest men America ever produced, his words among the most powerful and evocative ever written. They changed the trajectory of American history for the better, and only a handful of others can make the same claim."

I met him once.  My husband and I were walking along 5th Avenue in New York city, and there he was, by himself, no bodyguards, in front of a hotel waiting for a ride to where he was speaking that night.  I shook his hand and said "Thank you for all you do."  We asked him for his autograph and he cheerfully gave it.  He asked us what we do.  I told him that I taught children in an inner city school and with a twinkle he said "Thank you for all you do." The image of him standing on that broad sidewalk is as fresh in my mind today as that day many years ago.

I'm just catching up to a swirling controversy on parenting styles generated by the book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua.  Its official introduction calls it, "An awe-inspiring, often hilarious, and unerringly honest story of one mother's exercise in extreme parenting, revealing the rewards-and the costs-of raising her children the Chinese way."  Read Amy's own defense of her parenting here, and a rebuttal here

Will you please come by the Independent School Fair and say "Hi" to me.  I'll be at the registration table.

Sincerely, Parmalee

  Suki's Blog: Feminist Inspirations

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgI have off and on been working on an article about the irony of being a feminist homeschooler. It's a little bit like being a gay marine, but so far, no one has tried to stop me from telling my troops, eh, kids what my feelings are. I'm guessing they've figured it out.

One of the ways I love to teach is through stories, whether they are stories of my own or stories we listen to. And it's not always a question of listening to stories that I "agree" with - my kids and I have had some fascinating discussions about books that I or they didn't like.

However, I love it when a novel comes along that does it all: It teaches, it inspires, it creates a new world that we've never seen before  >>>>>>>

  Decluttering Your Brain

by Allison Cate

(Icons/Graphics) Clutter.jpgI, like so many others, began the New Year decluttering my house. I feel more at peace and energized when my home is in order. While sorting through clutter it dawned on me - I needed to declutter my brain. Wouldn't it be great if you could simply rid yourself of old worries or "to-dos" by giving them away like old clothes?

I was convinced that it could be done. After all, I've purged lots of stuff that I learned in college. Additionally, with each childbirth I'm pretty sure I purged more.

Using a piece of paper with three columns, I wrote down reoccurring thoughts I have in the first column. I focused only on those that I CAN CHANGE, even if it's only my attitude toward something or someone. Thought by thought I ranked each one's importance in my life in the second column using a scale from 1-5, 5 being least important. My scale measured value in my life. The last column was for reasoning, honest reasons why I gave the rank.

I was surprised by what I found. I use entirely too much brain space on things that barely rank 2 on my scale. Personal expectations and my sense of accomplishment create too much mental clutter. For example, I'm usually thinking about household chores during dinner rather than being present and interacting with my husband and kids. It is hard for me to change my expectations for a clean house, however, I have hope that by ranking brain clutter, I am now aware of it's low value in my life.

I'm working on my brain decluttering and I challenge you to do the same. Letting go of brain clutter is much harder than letting go of outgrown clothes but it's the ultimate purge and can bring back a peaceful and energetic you. Do it for you and your family.

  The Reasons We Clutter

by Julie Shulem

For many, hording clutter is a way of life. While this is not typically the initial desire, things just end up becoming this way.

Here are four main reasons people generally have cluttered environments. You may identify with one or several of these areas so I have included some ways to help combat the issue.

1. Fear of never being able to get something again

2. Inability to make a decision of whether it is still needed

3. Not asking, What will I actually DO with this at the time you are considering making a purchase

4. Not having enough space for everything to have a home? and keeping it anyway
