Are your children running to school?

(Site Photos) PrivateSchoolJoy.jpgIt's that time of year when we weigh and evaluate our options about schools for the next school year.  Whether you are looking at preschools, neighborhood schools, charter schools, homeschooling or private schools, bricks and mortar or the internet, there are many choices.  What is the best school for my child --because when it comes down to it, it's our responsibility to become informed about our options and to choose what's best for each of our children --and it may be different schools for different personalities and needs.

You may be quite pleased with your situation today.  On the other hand, there's a school fair coming up with representatives from 35 private schools and educational services all in one room.  What a great opportunity to learn about options, to compare and learn.

Some of us remember life without computers but today we cannot live without them. When they slow down, and they all do, a professional tuneup is a good alternative to a new computer.  When they crash, it's an urgent situation.  That happened to us and fortunately Santa Cruz Digital Solutions makes house calls.  We highly recommend them.

We're in for some sunny days!  See you outside in the parks and on the beaches.  I just wish the ants would get the message!    Parmalee

Suki's Blog: International Year of Forests!

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgMaybe I'm just in a mood tonight, but I just bumped into something that really rubs me like velcro on Berber carpet: I saw a note somewhere that this is International Year of Forests, as designated by the UN. I love forests. I live in one. Cool, I thought. I clicked on the link, and got to the very nice UN site about this designated year. Cute logos on it. I notice a little note at the bottom: "Logo guidelines and waiver form." Hm. Click on that link and get a PDF:

All entities interested in using the International Year of Forests logo for information purposes must apply to the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat. When requesting approval, the entities should provide:

␣ A short statement of identity (nature of organization and its objectives);
␣ An explanation of how and where the logo will be used; and
␣ A Waiver of Liability (please see page 5) must be signed by the entity requesting to use the logo

What? Perhaps I'm just channeling my inner Libertarian here, but is this really necessary? Do I, Suki Wessling of Santa Cruz County, California, need to sign a waiver for the UN in order to display a logo? One that I think is pretty? One that promotes love of forests? One that is, fer gawd's sake, disseminated by a body whose motto is "It's Your World"?

Heck, it's my world, so here's the darn logo: >>>>>>>

Kids Workshop: From Farm-to-Fork, January 15

(Site Photos) LoveAppleFarm_KidwithChicken.jpgKids today face myriad challenges when it comes to what they eat. Between multi-billion dollar marketing campaigns, lagging school lunch programs and full family schedules, it can be an uphill battle to get our children to learn more about where their food comes from.

The best way to influence the decisions our children make about food is to help them answer key questions such as: what is real food? Where does it come from? Who grows vegetables and raises animals for us to eat? How is it made? What's in our food? All of these questions and more, are addressed and unraveled in our brand new Farm-to-Fork workshop for kids and families.

Farming: we begin with an overview of our farm and garden, touring the grounds to see exactly how Love Apple functions as a full time farm. From where the chickens live to where the seeds are sown, we will cover a lot of different topics in this section. As we tour the garden, we will taste the different crops that we have growing in the garden, harvesting along the way for our lunch later. We'll also take a peek at our bee hives, and use honey in one of our recipes later in the kitchen.

Chickens: these animals play an important role in our farm, offering fresh, healthy eggs and also acting as pest control and composters. We will talk about the importance of farm animals, and how many animals serve more than one purpose. The kids will gather eggs and feed the chickens before we head over to the goats.

(Site Photos) LoveAppleFarm_KidswithGoat.jpg
Goats: like our chickens, goats serve more than one purpose on the farm. They help keep our brush down as well as providing us with fresh milk every day. The kids will meet our dairy goats, and then participate in milking them, harvesting fresh milk for cheese-making.

Cooking: cooking from the garden is second nature to us at the farm, but many kids don't realize just how the food on their plates got there. In the cooking portion of this workshop, we will put together a salad with what we've harvested from the garden, make cheese from our goat's milk and a simple dish with our fresh farm eggs and vegetables. The kids are encouraged to participate: they will wash fresh soil off our newly-picked veggies, trim and ready them for cooking, and see how simple and healthy dishes straight from the garden can be prepared in minutes. The kids will pull ribbons of fresh mozzerella and decorate medallions of chevre with farm flowers to take home, enjoying the experience of farm-to-fork eating!
