(Products/Books) BenHecht_AroundtheWorld.jpgI NEVER thought I would endorse a high tech reading program for any age, much less the little ones, but this new offering was developed with knowledge of and sensitivity to how children learn to read.  Scroll down to read more about Ben Hecht's latest creative adventure.

Welcome new readers!  We sometimes receive requests to "sign me up, and my friend too."  So we do.  You don't even have to be a parent or grandparent or professional serving families to appreciate the choices of events we gather for you.  Thank you for sharing; it helps us bring more information and choices to you.  Right now we are populating two new sections in the Activities category: one for Races: cycling, running, swimming, triathlons-- and one for Festivals

You can be the cleanest family in town and still become afflicted with head lice. You can be well off or not. Lice know no socioeconomic boundaries. Usually children bring them into a home, in fact often as not the parent is called by the school nurse to pick up their child because lice have been found on the head. Also usually more than one family member is afflicted by the little parasites. They've been around for milennia and are not likely to go away.  But enough from me, let's hear from an expert  --Nitless Noggins to the rescue with informaton and the Louse Buster!

Quality Children's Literature Meets High Tech

(Products/Books) BenHecht_Lillup.jpgMany of us in Santa Cruz opened our emails to discover that Ben Hecht's newest creative venture, VivaBook, is producing interactive stories for children on the iPad. Ben has assembled an impressive team of authors (Ben), artists, techies and a local Santa Cruz mom/actress with a great voice, Ruth Copeland.

In case some of you missed connecting with Ben while he was in Santa Cruz, he spent a few of years teaching first and second grades, then about nine years teaching art to children in his Seven Directions Art Institute. Children came to love and include Ben's pets in their art --Liam (aka Lilup) the shaggy, friendly, white dog; Nickelby Swift, the mischievous Savannah cat; and Gryphon, the talking African Grey parrot who sang the Star Wars song and delighted in light saber battles.

(Products/Books) BenHecht_Nickelby.jpgBen has always loved story telling and savors those with a journey and message. His early kindergarten and first grade students, most now 18 years old, recall coming into the classroom from recess to find Ben wearing a patchwork velvet jacket sitting before a little fake fireplace ready to read stories. Now, years later, Ben is back to storytelling, and his first two stories center around the imaginary adventures of his cat Nickelby Swift and dog Liam.

Ben and associates have been spending up to 18 hour days developing quality stories with a high tech flair. Not "Saturday morning gimmicky knockoffs", these are stories of a journey, a message, beautifully illustrated and interactive in a way that engages the child in reading and entering into the journey. They are highly kinetic --engaging sight, sound and touch-- and foster imagination and literacy.

The first two VivaBook apps, Nickelby Swift, Kitten Catastrophe and Around the World with Lilup can be downloaded and used on Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.  You can see an excerpt right here!  And you can purchase one on itunes.

Best of all, you can still snuggle with the children and the books, er... delivery gadgets!

  Suki's Blog: Lists of Books

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgAlthough it's not always the case that gifted children read early, or that children who read early remain gifted learners, it is a common lament amongst parents of the gifted that they can't keep up with their voracious reader's appetite.

The other problem with choosing books for young advanced readers is that most often, their emotional capabilities are closer to their chronological age. Books at their reading level often contain age-inappropriate content or high levels of violence.

So how should parents of early readers satisfy their children's demand for more and more literature? When choosing novels, you can follow some general guidelines:

1. Books from other eras: Children's books written before 1960 are more likely not to have inappropriate content. The Wizard of Oz series started in 1900 with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and extended past L. Frank Baum's original 14 books to 40 books by different authors. Many young readers find that they can be absorbed into the world of Oz for months, and the scariest it gets is the Wicked Witch of the West. [Click here to see a full list of Oz books.]

2. Read-out-loud books: Books that were written with the intent of being read aloud to younger children often are written at a level that will excite the gifted reader. The prose in Winnie the Pooh is fun and engaging, and is written at a high enough level that a gifted young reader will enjoy the age-appropriate story as well as offering rich language. Alice in Wonderland is fantastic for a child interested in wordplay.

3. Trusted authors: Certain authors are more likely to write books appropriate to young readers. Beverly Cleary's animal books are usually a safe bet. Dick King-Smith's books are short and thus will be absorbed quickly by a voracious reader, but they're fun and age-appropriate. Roald Dahl's adult characters are often mean, but young kids usually love these books. [See Book list for young gifted readers for specific recommendations.]

4. Safe science fiction/fantasy: Children who love science fiction but want to avoid more violent content are in a particularly awkward situation. The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane have strong, pre-adolescent role models. The Dragonling series by Jackie French Koller is a great fantasy book with action and adventure, but nothing too scary for a young reader.

  Facts of Lice

(Special Event Page Graphics) LiceGrowthChart.jpgby Marcy McQuillan, Nitless Noggins

What are head lice?  The head louse, or Pediculus humanus capitis, is a parasitic insect that can be found on the head and, more rarely, the eyebrows and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the scalp to maintain their body temperature.

What are the symptoms of head lice?

* An itchy scalp
* A tickling feeling of something moving on the scalp or through the hair
* Red bite marks on the scalp caused by excessive scratching or a red rash on the back of neck

Detection and Diagnosis of Lice  Head lice and eggs are found almost exclusively on human head hair and the scalp, frequently around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. Head lice and eggs are sometimes also found on the eyelashes or eyebrows, but this is uncommon. Misdiagnosis of head lice is common.

The best diagnosis is by finding a live nymph or adult louse on the scalp or hair of a person. Adult and nymphal lice are very small, move quickly, and avoid light, so they may be difficult to find. Using a fine toothed louse comb helps in correctly diagnosing head lice.

How They Spread  These critters move from head to head, hat to head, pillow to head, comb to head...If it's been on someone's lice ridden noggin, it could very well be a source of infestation.

Why shampoos don't work  Rid and other lice shampoos only kill adult lice and adolescent newts. These shampoos work by attacking the bug's central nervous system. Because baby lice or "nymphs" have not yet developed a central nervous system, they cannot be killed. In addition, lice shampoos do not kill lice eggs or "nits". So while you may kill the adult bugs, their eggs will remain, only to hatch a few days later starting the cycle all over again. This is why lice are so hard to eliminate! In addition, lice shampoos contain toxic chemicals which can enter your system through the skin on your scalp. Many adult lice have become resistant to these chemicals. So in many cases, the shampoos are completely useless.

 The Banff Mountain Festival

(Event Calendar Logos) banff.jpgFriday, February 25th & Saturday, February 26th at The Rio

The Banff Mountain Festival World Tour brings Banff to audiences around the globe. Immediately after the Festival ends in November, a selection of the best films go on tour across Canada, the United States, and internationally from Scotland to South Africa to China, Japan, New Zealand, Antarctica, and points in between. Each year, the films travel to 30 countries reaching more than 210,000 people at over 550 screenings.

Host organizations in each tour location choose a program that reflects the interests of their local audiences from a selection of films on exploration and adventure, culture and environment, and mountain sports.

The proceeds of many tour screenings benefit a local outdoor program, community cause, or a non-profit such as youth adventure and outdoor pursuit programs, search and rescue operations, climbing clubs, adaptive sport programs, conservation groups, and trail maintenance organizations.
