  Happy ValentinesDay toYou!

(0 A February 2019) Valentine_Quilled.jpgIndeed! Happy Valentine's Day! This celebration of friendship and love is one of our most popular days. Enjoy!!

Be safe! Get outside, get wet, feel the rain on your face, stomp in some puddles, then come inside and have hamburger soup!

Message from State Police if you must drive:

"STEER CLEAR of Flooded Roads
SCPD rule of thumb, don't drive into water that's too deep to see the painted markings on the road.
• Did you know...just 6 inches of standing water (sometimes less) can be enough to cause engine stalling.
• In approximately 1 foot of water, a typical car can begin to float and, as traction is lost, so is the steering control."

Allowances, family chores, extra chores, money, saving, tithing, spending --they're all part of the choices we make in our families. We offer a few approaches to help you figure out what aligns with your values.

Please share our newsletter with new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events!

Have a great weekend with family and friends!  Parmalee

Why I Never Gave My Child An Allowance

(0 A February 2019) TeacherTom.jpgby Teacher Tom

I don't claim to be a parenting expert, although my wife and I have managed to raise a child into adulthood who is self-motivated, who collaborates happily with others, who works hard, and who knows how to be a good friend.

Someone recently asked me about my own parenting. Among her questions was, "When did you start giving Josephine an allowance?" My answer was, "Never." Or rather, we may have tried giving her an allowance for a week or two, but generally speaking, when she needed money we gave it to her.

That flies in the face of the conventional idea that an allowance gives a child the opportunity to practice budgeting and saving and whatnot, skills she's going to need in adulthood. Read more>>>

  An Alternative to Allowance: Commission

by Dave Ramsey

Kids are like little sponges. They absorb everything around them-especially the things their parents are intentional about teaching them.

But here's the thing: Many parents today are so centered on what their kids want that they lose perspective on what their kids really need. And what kids need more than stuff-what will benefit them most over the course of their lives-is to understand the value of hard work.

(0 A February 2019) AllowanceRamsey.jpgTeaching a child to work is not for our benefit as their parents. We teach kids to work because it gives them dignity in a job well-done and the tools and character to win as adults. They might complain now, but someday, they'll thank you.

And here's the best part: Hard work is an antidote to entitlement-and key to learning the value of a dollar. Read more>>>

11 Benefits of Giving An Allowance

by Vicki Hoefle

There's little argument at this point that handling money as a child will prepare you for handling money as a young adult and eventually, as an adult. Great. But what exactly- as in literally- do the benefits of giving (0 A February 2019) Allowance_11Benefits.jpgallowance look like? Why is it such a valuable commitment?

Well, imagine for a moment, that you have been giving your children money each week from the time they were four years old and each week they were encouraged to make decisions about the money. Imagine if you handed over the gift buying power, the junk food buying power, the cheap "crap" purchasing power, and so forth. Imagine if you allowed your child to experience the frustration when she didn't have enough money to go out with friends, buy the perfect jeans or pay for her car payments. If you can imagine these lessons during childhood, you can imagine her respect for money heading into the real world. Read more>>>

  About Allowance --from a Parent

Gayle Rodgers Comment

Great comments about having an allowance. I think it is good when kids can earn money, too. I owned a manufacturing business when my kids were growing up so my son started working for me at 9 and my daughter was 7. They always had money. When they wanted to buy something I would ask them if they were willing to pay for half of it. I was surprised how often they said no. That's how I knew if they really wanted it. When my son wanted Michael Jordan shoes, I gave him what I would pay for regular shoes and he made up the difference. At the zoo they were the only kids not begging for treats because they had their money. Lynne L. Finch is the author of an excellent book - The No-Cash Allowance: A Practical Guide to Teaching Your Children How to Manage Money. She has people keep track of money on paper or the computer because we don't use CASH that much in our society.

"When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere, she wants to run to somewhere - to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and, preferably, elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing her younger brother Jamie has money and thus can help her with a serious cash-flow problem, she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at auction for a bargain price of $225. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master, Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Is it? Or isn't it?

Claudia is determined to find out. Her quest leads her to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue, and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself."
