(Site Photos) ToyTrain_Christmas.jpgOne of the best ways to ease tweens and teens through the "rebellious" years is by volunteering.  The members of the "Over the Hill Gang" welcome volunteers during the Toy Train Show at MAH between December 18-30. Call Eric today, 423.8072.  A two hour stint helps the museum and its visitors!

We are excited to bring you a chance to win tickets to the World of Many Colors Concert next Monday, December 13.  See how to win below! This is a great opportunity to hear new songs AND for teens to see if they might like to audition to join this lively musical group led by local musician, Stephen Bigger.

If your child likes math, or does not like math, you should read Suki's blogs on math.  By the way, we can tell from the back-end click-throughs that a LOT of you regularly read Suki's blogs.  That's great.  Suki would appreciate receiving your comments, reactions, positive, negative, your own experiences, suggestions, even a "Hi".  Writers love feedback from their readers.

Enjoy the season, Parmalee

(Icons/Graphics) Volunteersign.jpgI was taught at a young age by my mom the importance of giving back to others and that it is not about how much money or time you have, but rather that you are doing it from your heart. We have been volunteering as a family since our girls were young, either through organized events  or by creating something as simple as a pajama drive or hosting a lemonade stand. Several years ago we went down to Mexico to assist in building houses and I don't think that is an experience any of us will ever forget. I have found that when we give, it reminds us of how much we have. This year we joined the National Charity League which has given our daughters an opportunity to volunteer with other girls their age and learn more about some of our local non profits.

Last week, one of my daughters really surprised me with her initiative. She and I had been arguing --his new age and pre-teen stage has been much more challenging on our mother-daughter relationship. After one of our arguments she went upstairs to fume. About 15 minutes later, she asked me to come up and read an email she had written to our entire extended family. It went something like this...

"I've been having arguments with my mom this week and thought how lucky I am to have someone I can talk things out with even when we are frustrated with each other. While I was upset tonight, I thought about C.A.L.M. and families who are not able to work out their problems. C.A.L.M. is an association that helps kids who are abused and their parents. I've learned about it through my mom and I have volunteered there. I thought those families have more problems than I do and it would be great if we could raise money to help them solve those problems. I'm putting $50 of my babysitting money that I have earned and was hoping you could all spare a few dollars towards it. My goal is $500."

What has been amazing is seeing how quickly her grandparents and aunts and uncles have responded and on her own, she is making an impact.  One of the greatest lessons we can teach our children is the value of sharing our time and resources with others. We don't want our children to see giving as an obligation, so it is important to find things that your children connect with so they continue later on as adults.

ADOPT A FAMILY

(Event Calendar Logos) AdoptAFamily.jpgTo adopt a family, call 427-5075 in Santa Cruz or 722-2364 in Watsonville.  As our days grow shorter, many of us shift our thoughts to sharing the joy of the holiday season.  Unfortunately, an unprecedented number of local families are struggling with poverty, disabilities, abandonment, or severe economic strain and the holidays can be a very worrisome time.  These families struggle to meet their basic needs and may go without enough food and warm clothing, let alone toys or other holiday gifts.  We invite you to join us in making the holidays brighter for a family in need.

Businesses, individuals, and families can adopt a family of any size. Adopters are asked to provide family packages which include food gift certificates, clothing for the family, a gift for each child, and household items like blankets, towels, or sheets.

TAKE A STAR

Do you only have time to get one gift? Simply pick up a star from our participating local businesses, purchase the gift, and return it to the business by December 10, 2010. Stars will be available at area businesses starting Nov. 15th.

DONATE GIFT CERTIFICATES

Gift certificates from any grocery store, shoe store, bookstore or department store let our families choose exactly what they need for the holidays. This season due to current economic strains we have a large number of teens to be adopted and teens in particular, appreciate movie passes, certificates from music stores or clothing store certificates. Certicates can be dropped off at the Santa Cruz or Watsonville Office.

SIGN UP AS ELVES

Volunteer at one of our holiday warehouses by calling our Centers in Watsonville at 722-2364 and Santa Cruz 427-5075

  Suki: More Math Stories

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpgI wrote a blog a while back about math stories, then turned it into an article, which ran in the California Homeschooler magazine. I've put a new version on Examiner.com, so you can check it out there.

I've gotten a lot of great comments on this article. (Aside: Post comments on my blog, please! It's so lonely in here. People are always e-mailing me or sending comments via Facebook, but I'd love you-all to talk to each other on my blog...) It's great to know that others are interested in this subject.

Correspondent Dodi sent me this list, which I thought I should pass on:

Just read your article in the HSC magazine. I, too, looked for math taught through stories for my daughter (now in 7th grade) and kept a list of favs. I thought I'd share them with you. They don't all fit your exact criteria, but I thought they were all delightful and worth recommending. continued>>>>>

  Gifts for the Little Ones

I googled "best toys 2010" or something like that.  The results were appalling and discouraging, so it was very pleasant to find toys to entice and delight at our own local stores.

Christy Paul, owner of Lolly Tree Toys, always knew she would be working with children.  She began a teaching career with the Teach America program at a challenging inner city school, now teaches Math at the high school level in Scotts Valley and carefully selects for Lolly Trees toys that foster creativity.

Lolly Tree Toys recommends!

(Products/Books) Toy_EducoShapeSorter.jpg Classic 6-sided wood shape sorter with matching colored shapes: circle, square, trapezoid, triangle, star and halfcircle. Shapes are filled with beads and once put in the sorter can be removed by stretching the orange-elastic across the opening at the shape top or bottom. Educo Ages 1+
(Products/Books) Toys_ArtDesign_SmartLab.jpg  These "design studios" by Smart Lab foster creativity for children interested in designing cars, fashion, or motorcycles.  The books that come with them are inspiring and well written with excellent graphics. Ages 7+
(Products/Books) Toys_Automoblox_Manhatten.jpg   These Automoblox are difficult to keep in stock because they are very popular.  Stylish and well made, all the car parts are interchangeable and they roll very well. Manhatten Toys  Ages 3+
(Products/Books) Toys_BonzCuriousToys.jpg  Curious Toys makes Dragon Bonz, Exo Bonz, and other wonderfully challenging wacky toys to inspire children to make unusual creatures and tell you about them.  Ages 4-5
(Products/Books) Toys_Dollhouse_Plan.jpg  It's hard to beat a classic Plan dollhouse, including a garden, dog house and furnishings.  Children's play imitates adults.  Think what you can learn about your child as you play "house" with them.  Gender neutral.  Ages 5+

After moving to Santa Cruz and managing a large apartment complex which got bought out in the real estate squeeze, Dyane Villalobos looked at all her options and decided to follow her heart by opening an eclectic store that sells gently used, local unique hand-made clothing, unusual collectibles and "green" toys.

Childish Santa Cruz recommends!

A few years ago Monica Karst left the corporate world to open Baby Shoppe Santa Cruz.  It reflects Monica's cheerful energy with a dazzling array of useful and fun gifts.  If there's a baby in your life, this shop will enchant you with unique and locally made items for babies.

Baby Shoppe Santa Cruz Suggests!

(Products/Books) Toys_IndestructiblesBooksforBabies.jpg Indestructibles introduces a revolutionary new baby book invented by a mother of triplets who wanted to share books with her babies, hassle-free. They are water-proof, tear-resistant, and baby-durable, making them the perfect books for babies who "read" with their little hands and mouths.
(Products/Books) Toys_teethifier.jpg  Everyone has seen fingers stuck deep in a child's mouth trying desperately to relieve the pain of incoming rear molars, but so far no teether has conquered the problem. Until now. The Teethifier, the advanced back teeth teether, combines a standard pacifier shield with a specially engineered teether end to comfortably reach and massage sore gums.
