  Happy New Year!

(2016 Dec) HappyNewYearFlowers.jpgHappy New Year! May your new year expand into beautiful new horizons as you continue the journey of raising future citizens. It's an awesome responsibility with struggles and rewards.  Carry on dear parents!

It seems I make the same resolution every year. How about you? I wish I could tell you how I made a resolution come true in its entirety, however I have to report that I'm still a work in progress. So I conclude: make one resolution, work on it and do your best!

(0 January 2018) skatewoman.jpgPlease, you must go ice skating at the Boardwalk or Capitola. You may see a few cold-climate transplants skating with ease and amazement at the mild temperatures. Join them!

BC, Before Children, we celebrated New Year's Eve as adults.  Skip that!  Now it's a family New Year's Eve. Bring out all the games, order pizza, get into pj's, take in a good movie with popcorn, kid-bubbly and get enough sleep for a fun First Day Hike, a great way to set the tone for 2018! If you're having a party with children, we've included a few kid-friendly activities.

Please recommend our newsletter to new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always the many fun events! Check the online calendar.

Enjoy the event filled weekend with family!  Parmalee

Kids' Night Out! The First Act for the Young and Young-at-Heart

First Night is Monterey's most exciting, imaginative and uplifting cultural event. FNM is an affordable, alcohol-free family celebration of the arts on New Year's Eve from the 3 pm Opening Ceremony to the Countdown to Midnight; our theme for FNM 2018 celebrates "25 Years of Magic". The many performances range from Classical to Hip-Hop, Jazz to Reggae, dance and artwork.

New Year's Eve with the Family

(0 January 2018) NYE2CountdownBags.jpgWays to celebrate New Year's Eve with your kids

Countdown Bags  Try out these nifty countdown bags. Each hour, on the hour, your littlies get to open up one of the bags that can contain a treat of your choice, from sweets and small toys to glow sticks and sparklers.

Midnight Fizzy Treat  While many children may not be able to stay awake until midnight, give the few that push through a chance to toast to the New Year! You can either do milk and their favourite biscuit or something fizzy and a chocolate.

New Year's Tree  Take your Christmas tree to a whole New (Year) level. While the adults are having a chat, keep the littlies out of mischief by having them redecorate the Christmas tree with surprise-filled balloons, streamers and a few crackers.

(0 January 2018) NYE4BalloonPop.jpgBalloon Pop  Set up a special corner in your home for your little ones to pop a balloon each hour until midnight. The balloon countdown clock is an absolute must!

Sparklers  Always a winner among adults and children are sparklers. Make sure to have a large supply as these are going to disappear pretty quickly.

Memory Jar  Create a memory jar of favorite events, places, visits, foods, classes, friends, achievements

(0 January 2018) NYE1sparklers.jpgGuess How Many Jar  Fill a clear glass or plastic jar with a known quantity (yes, you have to count them!) of candy, marbles, pennies, tiny toy cars or .... Decorate the jar, provide slips of paper for names and "guesses" and a small basket for entries. At the end of the party award the jar of goodies to the child with the closest guess.

  Snap the Whip!

(0 January 2018) SkateDuckPondCT.jpgOff we went clothed in baggy snow pants over long underwear, coats, wool mittens, scarves and hats. We all, kids and adult skaters, knew the best locations: Hesseky Meadows, a three mile long swampy area where ice fishermen had chopped holes through the ice; Running Brook with its long canals meandering through hay fields and woods; and Cold Mountain Pond which had benches for switching from galoshes to skates, a firepit and wood supplied by a friendly farmer.

As soon as it had been freezing 24/7 for several days we showed up, sandwiches in pockets, to lace up and skate for hours. Girls had figure skates and hockey sticks and boys had hockey skates and sticks. There was always clean snow in case we were thirsty. Usually some kind adults had shoveled the pond. We were on our own for the wilder sites. It was a (0 January 2018) skatesnapthewhip.jpgrace to see who could lace up first. Then off we went to find the sweet spots, smooth-as-glass-never-disturbed ice, sometimes having to proceed cautiously over the snow-crusted or wind-blown bumpy areas.

The most fun of all was playing "Snap the Whip." Forming a line, holding hands, we skated in circles, the strongest holding his place in the center, until we were going so fast that the outside person let go and was propelled forward at an astonishing rate of speed.

Skating at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz and iskate in Capitola is a tamer experience, and one not to be missed for California kids! Where else can you skate in a tank top and shorts by the sea!
