(Holidays) BeachChristmas_Snowman.jpgOnly a week until Christmas! The children are out of school, college students are coming home.  We hope you are ready to enjoy holiday fun!  If you are a transplant from a wintry, snowy climate you undoubtedly are creating new traditions with your family.  Caroling  around the village Christmas tree, sliding down steep "Fanny Hill", going out to try out your new ice skates on Christmas morning all yield to mild climate celebrations.

State parks and long beaches offer good hiking/walking/treasure hunting. The toy trains at MAH await you.  This is a good time of year to visit a museum.  If you want to get some exercize, there's ice skating at Circle of Palms in San Jose and roller skating in Santa Cruz or horseback riding at the beach. We place sparkling lights on Christmas trees, houses, boats, cactus plants and grazing deer on our lawns. A night drive around town is an adventure in light!

(Holidays) ChristmasBeachTreasures.jpgThe incoming storm is bound to cough up some beach treasures.  I'm thinking "sea glass" and driftwood for the garden and gift-making projects!

For those of you who are not affiliated with a church but would like to enjoy a Christmas Eve service, view our list below. Many have special candlelight services with singing.

(Holidays) ChristmasElves.jpgEnjoy this time with family and friends creating memories for a lifetime.  We shall be reading Santa Mouse,  chuckling over Marmaduke's misadventures and looking for that tiny present wrapped in white paper with a gold bow left on a bow of the Christmas tree by Santa Mouse.

The elves are working behind the scenes to bring you a new, hip, very interactive, local parent resource website for January.

Merry Christmas! Parmalee

  Take Visitors to the Slough

(Special Event Page Graphics) ElkhornSloughBirders_MM.jpgRecently Mount Madonna School's AP Environmental Science class had the chance to contribute to an ongoing field study of migratory shore birds at Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing. Four times each year, biologists are sent to different parts of the slough to count the number of migratory birds and permanent shore birds out for their early evening forage. The slough reserve staff asks seasoned field biologists and experienced birders to go out with field scopes and journals and get an accurate count of how many birds are there.

(Site Photos) ElkhornSlough_SnowyPlover.jpgThe study is very important in determining the health of the different bird populations who call the slough home, explains Lisa Catterall, MMS high school science teacher. "Some of the birds are on their way from Canada to Mexico, and the slough is a critical stopping-off point on the journey. Without data to support what numbers are healthy, scientists would not be able to determine whether a given type of bird is threatened or in trouble from environmental pressures."

(Site Photos) BirdsEgret1.jpgElkhorn Slough is a critical wetland resource for the land surrounding Watsonville. It helps filter runoff pollutants before they reach the sea, and it supports a wealth of diverse animal life. The tides that run up the slough and the mixing of salt and fresh-water in the estuary environment create homes for unique animals and birds.

(Site Photos) elkhornSlough_Woodpecker.jpgIn preparation for the trip, students spend several sessions studying specific birds in-depth; this allows them to be useful assistants to the scientists at the slough. This year, students had the opportunity to work with A.Todd Newberry, Professor of Biology at UCSC and an avid birder.

"We had a good time out there," says James Clifton, a Mount Madonna School senior. "We saw a lot more birds than I expected and were really able to contribute to the count."

  Suki: The Eight Year Old Singing Seamstress

(Site Photos) SukiRedHead_138.jpg

I see by the date of my last post that I've been gone a while. To give you a bit of perspective, this is what hits me come late November:

* Thanksgiving
* Daughter's birthday
* Husband's birthday
* Chanukah at our house
* Christmas at my parents' house

See? You don't have it so bad after all with just two holidays! It would probably be OK except for the way that Chanukah bounces all over the place. Darn lunar calendar. Just when I get a fix on Chanukah that spans Christmas, I get Chanukah in November. Oy.

But daughter's birthday leads me to my rant of the day, or rather, sage advice of the day. Too tired to rant.

(Icons/Graphics) SingingSeamstress.jpgDaughter loves sewing. She always enjoyed making little things by hand, then friend Heddi got ahold of her and she joined Heddi's sewing club. Now, she is simply mad about sewing.

The other day, I had to tell daughter that I was sorry to inform her, but she couldn't only do sewing in homeschool. She looked at me with that newly minted eight-year-old dismissive stare. And..... continued>>>

 Things That Roll: Toy Trains 2011

(Special Event Page Graphics) TrainExhibit1.jpgMAH and The Over the Hill Gang present
What is Christmas without toy trains and this is an interactive display!
Every day (Dec 18-Jan 2) Free Admission

Join us for a rotating cavalcade of operating toy trains from the 1920s to the 21st century. Watch a massive standard gauge steam engine from the 1920s start up-headlight flashing, drive wheels spinning, smoke flowing from the smoke stack and of course a mighty whistle. On another track, see a remote controlled modern production of an O gauge diesel with all the latest electronic features.

Hear the roar as the diesel starts up, the blast of the mighty horn, the squeal of the brakes at the train slows for a curve and the chatter between the engineer and the control tower. Toy trains have come a long way over the last century, but new or old, the emphasis is on fun!

(Site Photos) TrainBlondeCurlsBoy.jpgToy Trains features the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad with its famous Chicago-California streamliner "The Super Chief" in miniature. Children and the young at heart have the opportunity to operate the trains, sound the whistles and much more! Visitors will view vintage advertisements extolling the advantages of luxurious Pullman train travel of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Examples of many interactive accessories some and colorful catalogues produced over the years will also be displayed in the exhibition. Members of the Over the Hill Gang will be on hand to help young engineers' master controls and to answer questions. Don't miss this nostalgic exhibition.

The Museum closes early on December 24 and December 31

The Museum is closed on December 25 and January 1, 429-1964, www.santacruzmah.org
