  Bah Humbug!

(0 A December 2018) BahHumbug.jpgI feel sorry for the "Bah Humbugers" drumming up cockamanie ways to spoil the joy of holiday traditions.

Feel free to watch your favorite movie classics; listen to any song you like; read any book that intrigues you; place a few candy canes on your Christmas tree; wear a red Santa hat; sing Christmas carols; wear red or green clothing; give a present; wish people Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza or Happy Holidays; and in conversations, use colorful expressions derived (0 A December 2018) ParadeKidsInRed.jpgfrom real life situations -"Don't count your chickens before they're hatched; Take the bull by the horns; One swallow doesn't make a summer; Bring home the bacon," etc.

Celebrate or not Mr. and Mrs Humbug, just don't "rain on our parades."

(0 A December 2018) BahHumbug_Dickens.jpg"A Merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!" cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge's nephew, who came upon him so quickly that this was the first intimation he had of his approach. / "Bah!" said Scrooge, "Humbug!" / [...] "Christmas a humbug, uncle!" said Scrooge's nephew. "You don't mean that, I am sure." / "I do," said Scrooge. "Merry Christmas! what right have you to be merry? what reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough." / "Come, then," returned the nephew gaily. "What right have you to be dismal? what reason have you to be morose? You're rich enough." / Scrooge having no better answer ready on the spur of the moment, said, "Bah!" again; and followed it up with "Humbug."

Have a joyous weekend with the family, Parmalee

  Cookies and Milk or...

(0 A December 2018) Christmas_CokiesAndMilk.jpg"Over the years, different countries have developed their own versions of the cookies-and-milk tradition. British and Australian children leave out sherry and mince pies, while Swedish kids leave rice porridge. Santa can expect a pint of Guinness along with his cookies when delivering toys in Ireland. French children leave out a glass of wine for Père Noël and fill their shoes with hay, carrots and other treats for his donkey, Gui (French for "mistletoe").

In Germany, children skip the snacks altogether and leave handwritten letters for the Christkind, a symbolic representation of the Christmas spirit who is responsible for bringing presents on Christmas. Though many German kids mail their letters before the holiday-there are six official addresses for letters addressed to the Christkind-others leave them out on Christmas Eve, decorated with sparkly glue or sugar crystals. On Christmas morning, the letters have been collected, and gifts left in their place."

Exquisite Harmonies from Eastern Europe and Beyond

(0 A December 2018) Kitka_evening-star_cover_lite.jpgThe women in Kitka are fearless sonic explorers, and you can hear their intrepid spirit in every haunting song.

Over nearly four decades the eight-women Oakland ensemble has developed a vast, breathtaking repertoire of traditional songs from the Balkans, Caucasus and Slavic lands, as well as new material composed for the group drawing on those traditional vocal practices.

Traveling to rural communities in Armenia and Bulgaria, Ukraine and Georgia, Serbia and Turkey, they've gathered songs and communed with elders who are often the last links to centuries-old traditions.

The ravishing textures of the women's voices, unearthly cadences, angular rhythms and unfamiliar languages make Kitka's performances an enthralling experience.
