Museums Bring the World to Us

(0 Dec 2016) Spooner_tiger.jpgWe can't all travel the world.  The ages of our children or costs of travel or even safety may prevent us from visiting  other cultures in person.  That's where world class museums, movies, books and the internet, even sharing with neighbors from different heritages come into play.

We highlight some unique museum exhibits to visit this month.  "The Kids Should See This!" made me laugh and "The Future of the Past" is awesome. Who doesn't want to know more about Wish Upon a Star: The Art of Pinocchio at The Family Walt Disney Museum.

(2 Widgets) Holliday_Christmas.jpgMany of our local holiday art and gift sales offer crafts and art from a variety of cultures.  A few are below in Places to Go but for sure go to the online calendar for all events and sales.  Enjoy!

Please share our newsletter with new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events! We are still activating posts on our calendar so be sure to check the online calendar for more events over the weekend.

Have a festive weekend with family and friends!  Parmalee

(0 Dec 2016) Spooner_Goldilocks.jpgCurious Contraptions by automata artist Paul Spooner

Via the new Curious Contraptions exhibition at San Francisco's Exploratorium, meet artist and mechanic Paul Spooner. Within a community of British makers, Spooner created over 40 whimsical kinetic sculptures for The Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, an over 30 year old automata collection at the center of the (0 Dec 2016) Spooner_swimmer.jpgExploratorium's exhibit. Cams, cranks, and other bits of engineering drive the creations' stories into action.

Each sculpture performs an absurd miniature drama that often reflects its maker's dark and very British sense of humor. Exposed inner workings encourage visitors to investigate the low-tech mechanisms used to make these automata move. Additional exhibits offer a closer look at the most common simple mechanisms.

The Exploratorium's Curious Contraptions exhibition will run from November 17, 2016-January 29, 2017.

  The Future of the Past

(0 Dec 2016) mummy2.jpgThe Future of the Past, Mummies and Medicine

Legion of Honor through Aug 26, 2018

Ancient Egypt meets modern medicine in this exhibition that makes use of state-of-the-art scientific techniques to explore two of the Fine Arts Museums' mummies. An interdisciplinary team of scientists, Egyptologists, physicians, and museum curators and conservators has learned more about how these embalmed individuals lived, died, and were prepared for eternity.

Rebecca Fahrig and Kerstin Müller of Stanford University Medical School's department of radiology have conducted high-resolution, three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scans of the mummies, revealing long-held secrets. The resulting data have been studied by Jonathan Elias of the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium, who offered much of the interpretation seen in the exhibition.

One of the mummies investigated is that of Irethorrou, a priest from an important family living in Akhmim in middle Egypt about 2,600 years ago. The Future of the Past includes information that has been gleaned about Irethorrou's lifestyle, the society in which he lived, his religion, and the funerary beliefs of his time. The second mummy, perhaps 500 years older, is that of a woman traditionally known as "Hatason." Neither her mummy nor her coffin has fared as well as those of Irethorrou, and they present a stark contrast to Irethorrou's perfectly preserved body.

Visitors can examine both mummies by means of an interactive virtual dissection table supplied by Anatomage, a San Jose medical solutions company. Hauntingly beautiful amulets and tomb furnishings are also displayed.

Tickets: Entry to this exhibition is included with general admission to the museum. Adults $15, seniors 65+ $10, students with current ID $6, members and youth 17 and under free. Prices subject to change without notice.

(0 Dec 2016) Retna-hieroglyphic-calligraphic.jpgRETNA AT THE LEGION

Los Angeles-based artist RETNA has created a design for the walls of this exhibition that combines modern graffiti art with influences from Egyptian hieroglyphs. RETNA (b. Marquis Duriel Lewis, 1979) uses a distinctive language of calligraphic forms to create a deeply personal poetry, drawing from a variety of typographies, including Arabic, Egyptian, Hebrew, Old English, and Native American.

(0 Dec 2016) Rama.jpgCurrently on view at the Asian Art Museum, "The Rama Epic: Hero, Heroine, Ally, Foe" continues through Jan. 15, 2017.

In addition to The Rama Epic and the collection galleries, don't miss Tomb Treasures: New Discoveries from China's Han Dynasty (Feb 17-May 28, 2017)

(0 Dec 2016) u7l3qw_Pinocchio.jpgVisitors can step behind the scenes of one of the most influential animated films in history at The Walt Disney Family Museum

Wish Upon a Star: The Art of Pinocchio, is on view through Jan. 9, 2017. Step behind-the-scenes to explore the artistic process of how one of the most influential animated films in history was produced: Walt Disney's 1940 feature-length masterpiece Pinocchio.

Featuring more than 300 objects, this original exhibition takes a closer look at the settings, color, mood, style and more of this classic, which has dazzled audiences for more than 75 years.

Thanks for the heads up from San Francisco Travel.
