(Graphics) QualityEducation.jpgAre you VERY interested in the quality of education? If so, our friends of the Central Coast Independent Schools of California frequently post interesting, provocative, opinion and fact-based articles and local education items and articles on their FACEBOOK page. LIKE their page and you can receive alerts about educational ideas, opinions and events.

September brings new beginnings: schools, teachers, friends and ENRICHMENT classes --art, theater, music, dance, soccer, football, swimming. Go to our Events Calendar, use the search feature and select Classes.

I "know" many famous authors very well, as do you! After all we have been reading all our lives. They make writing seem easy, right? More often than not, writing requires hours of diligent work writing and re-writing. Along the way we've known classmates who turn in papers well written and on time when we can barely think of what to say in a book report. There are children who struggle to write two sentences. What's the solution? Could it be teachers who know how to write and teach writing? Are they common or rare? Suki has a very thoughtful opinion piece on writing and Adrienne Momi has a writing challenge for students ages 8-11.

(Graphics) Itwasadarkandstormynight.jpgHow about designating one night as Family Writing Night at dinner? Bring a favorite sentence from a favorite book. Everyone gets to make his own sentence in the same pattern. Rotate turns introducing a sentence. Require physical writing. Share! Keep a journal over the years as you advance from picture books to classics and contemporaries.

Imagine writing a sentence in the style of Mark Twain in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter."  My offering is "You don't know me unless you have read the mystery series by Dorothy Gilman."  By the way, it took Mark Twain eight years, off and on, to write his masterpiece.

How wonderfully these two sentences from The Tale of Peter Rabbit set the stage for adventure, "One day, Mrs. Rabbit goes to the bakery, leaving Peter and his sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail to play and gather berries in the forest. Disobeying his mother's orders, Peter sneaks into Mr. McGregor's garden and eats as many vegetables as he can before Mr. McGregor spots him and chases him around.

Have a great weekend and please write a few sentences on our Facebook page, Parmalee

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpgThis is a transcript of a talk that I gave at the recent HSC Conference in Sacramento. Thanks to my great audience, I have edited the content so hopefully now it's even more helpful. This talk was written with homeschoolers in mind. If your children are in school or will be in school, you'll find that schools have a very different approach to writing. Somewhere along the way, they forgot to observe children who eventually became good writers and analyze what helped them get there. You're not going to be able to change the way your child's teachers do things, but perhaps if you have a child who has been deemed unsatisfactory in the writing department, you can follow some of my suggestions at home. You might also even consider making suggestions to the teacher, if you think s/he is receptive.

I graduated from University of Michigan with a Master's in Creative Writing. Somehow, this made me eligible to teach expository writing at the college level. I remember when I got my first job, my elation and then my dismay: How do you teach expository writing? Nobody had ever taught me much of anything. I read the textbook before walking in the first day. And I got one valuable piece of advice: Another teacher told me that the best way to get to know my students was to have them write their first essay on the topic, "How my family eats dinner." continued >>>>
