(Graphics) Campfire2.jpgI confess to favoring the start of school after Labor Day.  There is something so wonderful about seeing the summer through to the end of August, having the last family picnic or campout at the beach/lake/park.  This sets the stage for really wanting to go back to school to see friends, meet new classmates, get into a good routine and scope out the new teacher(s).

Does it seem to you that homeschooling is frequently in the news?  Why, it has reached mainstream status.  Here's an article on the local homeschooling scene.  Homeschoolers do many activities together, often sharing expertise, skills and doing group field trips.  Suki and Amy each offer their perspectives on homeschooling.

It's good to have choices: homeschool, public school, private school or a combination of your own design. Visit our Education, Schools & Tutors directory.  Looking for enrichment classes?  Visit our Classes directory.  Preschools still welcome your inquiry.

Do you have a child who resists writing?  Perhaps having a penpal, the "old fashioned" kind, as Pam suggests, could be the ticket to writing more easily! Check out the Penpal Kids Club or Amazing Kids.

(Photos General) LittlBear.jpgI'm moving and there's nothing like a move to make one realize that "stuff" multiplies in drawers, closets, boxes, the garage. There's furniture I put up with but don't want to move, food on the shelves I shall never eat. I just cannot bear to get rid of the little wooden bear whose demure but slightly impish expression reminds me of my daughter when she was a toddler we called  "Little Bear".   Yard sale #1 is on Saturday and I think I'll christen it "Embarrassing Yard Sale". Please, if you know me, don't come. Just kidding! My nephew offered to help me. I am grateful for his muscle and energy, and I expect part of his reward will be relieving me of some of the stuff, etc. This is probably a good time for yard sales with the return of the students.  Oh Oh! The keep section is growing!

Have a great weekend, Parmalee

To Tdap (Whooping Cough) Vaccine or Not: Your Choice

Where you can Get the Vaccine

Santa Cruz County- No shot, No school! New California law requires students entering grades 7 through 12 to provide proof of Tdap immunization in order to enter school in the Fall of 2011. Those who are unable to get the shot before school starts, may have a 30-day grace period. In an effort to help families and schools comply with the new California law, Salud Para La Gente and the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency are teaming up to provide FREE Tdap (whooping cough) vaccination clinics for Santa Cruz County students entering 7th-12th grades in Fall 2011.

Students may attend any of the clinics below:

Date Time Location
August 3
9:00am - 12:00pm
PVUSD District Office Towers - Board Room
August 4 9:00am - 12:00pm Watsonville High School
August 10 4:00pm - 7:00pm PVUSD District Office Towers - Board Room
August 11 4:00pm - 7:00pm Watsonville High School
August 18 7:30am - 11:00am Aptos High School
August 18 4:00pm - 7:00pm Live Oak Family Resource Cente

Students may also see their medical provider for the immunization between now and the end of summer. Most major pharmacies also offer this immunization. The proof of the immunization must be provided to school staff prior to the first day of school.  All students MUST come with a parent/guardian or a signed parental consent form. For more infiOYou ormation, please contact the Corinne Hyland at chyland@health.co.santa-cruz.ca.us or call 454-7558.

What to Do if You Want to Opt Out of this Vaccine

California State Exemption Page

Both Medical and Personal Beliefs Exemption (PBE) are available. Schools have been given a new form, CDPH 8261 to be used for the Tdap booster.

From July 1, 2011 thru June 31, 2012, students entering grades 7-12 must either receive the Tdap vaccine, or submit a medical exemption or a Personal Beliefs exemption. The Personal Beliefs exemption (PBE) should be filed on CDPH 8261.

All California schools should have copies of CDPH 8261.  At this time CDPH 8261 is not posted online and CDPH wants parents to receive this form from your school district. If your school does not have the CDPH 8261 forms, then your county health department should be able to help.  Contact number for County of Santa Cruz Health: 831-454-4343.

Viva: Finance Nuts and Bolts, Start a Gift Fund

(Graphics) LemonGirl.jpg

Sometimes I talk generally about saving money and prioritizing spending. But I know it can be helpful to also talk very specifically about strategies that can be used to get us there.

One of the most effective strategies I've used for staying out of debt (thereby saving money) is planning ahead for expected expenses. One category of expected expenses is gifts. Gifts for the holidays, birthday gifts for family, baby/wedding shower gifts, and birthday gifts for all of the birthday parties that my young daughter is invited to. I keep a spreadsheet that tracks the money I deposit into our savings account, so that I can allocate deposits to various funds. When the first paycheck of each month arrives. . . ...  continued>>>>

  Amy: Milestones, Not Millstones

(Photos General) AmyWirth_SantaCruzParent.jpgIt seems like my life as a parent has mini-seasons that have nothing to do with the weather. May was about travel and June was about processing and starting our summer. July has been all about milestones.

Has any modern parent not come to dread that word? Somewhere between the second and third trimesters with Bean I realized I better not purchase What To Expect in the First Year or I would go nuts. It didn't matter though because at every well child visit from about six months on, I sat in the waiting room of my pediatrician's office and filled out a milestone questionnaire, sometimes blithely checking off the expected Yes or No, and sometimes filling out qualifying mom-notes in the margins. I wasn't sure if our first pediatrician even read the forms. . . continued>>>>

Suki: Taking Your gifted Learner Out of School

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpg

I gave a workshop at the recent Homeschool Association of California Conference in Sacramento, and a few people suggested that I post it here for those who couldn't attend. If you are the parent of a gifted learner and you're thinking about taking him/her out of school, perhaps this will help you make an informed choice.

Parents generally assume that the year their children turn six years old, they will send them off to kindergarten. The children will use scissors and paste, learn the alphabet, and maybe even learn to read. They"ll sit quietly while the teacher reads stories to them, and use manipulatives to familiarize themselves with basic mathematical concepts such as number recognition and counting. It will be fun, and parents will proudly display their children"s artwork on the refrigerator at home. When the parents go in for their first parent-teacher conference, they will meet the wonderful lady (it"s usually a lady, isn"t it?), maybe for the first time, whom they have entrusted with their children"s introduction to the world outside of their home, and they will be told how sweet their children are and how well they have learned to play with others. They will have no worries.

It's a nice fantasy, isn't it?   ... continued>>>

  Pam: Pen Pals

(Photos General) PamCarrico.jpgThis morning, when I opened my mailbox, I was reminded of one of the great things we have lost to technology, letter writing. I got a beautiful drawing and letter from one of my 3 year old Farm Campers. (Mommy transcribed for her)

It's full of love and excitement, telling me about the frog we found here and relocated to her pond at home. There is something so special about holding a piece of paper, reading these words. It's just not the same as words written by computer or text.

When I was a girl, we lived in San Diego, while my grandma lived in San Jose. We had an ongoing correspondence from the time I started Kindergarten. She sent me pretty stationary to use, and I would excitedly wait for the mail every day. On birthdays and every little holiday, my letter would come with a package. It wasn't ever anything extravagant, but I lived for the outfits she sewed for me, using fabric scraps from other projects. When I came to visit in the Summer, my Mom would become my pen pal until I got back home... continued>>>
