(Photos General) BabywithWatermelon.jpgWhat could be more awesome than the gift of children --a baby's first smile, first laugh, rowdy play between dads and kids, the toddler asking "Please, can I get into the book?", the contrite son telling you he broke the neighbor's window with a great baseball hit, the maturing teen who "returns from turning away", the delight in adult children's adventures and paths you never imagined, and even the heartbreaks with children that sometimes visit us.  Enjoy Suki's article on the gift of children.

Viva's Goal Setting article is inspiring and adaptable to all ages.  By breaking goals into categories, she makes goal setting both palatable and easy.  Try her approach!

United Way Santa Cruz  touches many facets of our community. Every year United Way celebrates family (BUILT IN) (Homepage Icons) momkidsstreet.giffriendly workplaces.  You may be working at a place that respects and flexes with family needs.  If so, you can nominate your workplace for an award.  Currently United Way and Palace Arts are sponsoring Stuff the Bus, a drive to help our county's neediest students start the school with good supplies.  You can purchase individual items to donate or buy a complete set of supplies in a backpack at Palace.

Imagine your family in our rotating homepage image instead of our graphics families!  Just like this image, only real people at the beach, on a hike, having a picnic, reading stories, doing chores, having a turkey dinner, making a sandcastle, riding bikes...Please send us your photo and permission to use it.  We shall create the graphics.  Names will not be mentioned on the website but you will be able to tell your friends!   Family Friendly Workplace Awards

(Photos General) FamilyFriendly_mombaby.jpgBalancing work and family is one of the most significant parenting challenges. The term "family-friendly workplace" has meant many things over the past few years and the types of benefits that companies are now instituting have evolved. There is a wide range of company benefits, that when packaged together, can really make a difference in a working parents life. This year, once again local employers are being recognized for their efforts to create family friendly workplaces.

Here are the winners of the 2012 Santa Cruz County Family Friendly Workplace Awards

Family Friendly Workplace Award with a Breast Feeding Emphasis

  • Central California Alliance for Health
  • Driscoll's
  • Reiter Berry Farms and Affiliates

Winners - Family Friendly Workplace Award

  • Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos
  • The Volunteer Center
  • YWCA of Watsonville

Examples of Family Friendly Workplace policies are:

  • Schedule Flexibility: flextime, part-time, job sharing, compressed workweeks - these are all ways to ease the schedule conflicts that parents face.
  • Telecommuting: whether it's an everyday arrangement, available on an as-needed basis, or somewhere in between, many employers see telecommuting as a way to provide another form of flexibility to workers.
  • Child-care Programs: companies are setting up on-site or off-site daycare, after-school and summer programs, as well as sick and emergency child care programs that allow parents to have one less thing to worry about in their day.
  • Maternity/Paternity Leave Policy: the standard 6 weeks is being stretched out to accommodate parents who want to be home with their infants, and companies are extending the benefit to dads too.
  • Wellness Programs: it's no mystery that a happy, healthy employee is much more productive than a stressed-out, sick one.

(Logos Business) UnitedWay.jpgThese practices can benefit employers by better retention of employees, greater focus at work for employees, and fewer work absences.

Specific Breastfeeding Friendly Policies are also in place by many local employers. This year the Family Friendly Workplace Awards are again honoring employers that have breastfeeding specific policies, both formal and informal. Increasing by 25% over the last seven years, Women are an essential and growing part of our workforce in terms of their numbers and productivity.

The Family Friendly Workplace Awards is launched in May of each year. Nominations are collected in June and winners announced in July. For more information contact: Kymberly Lacrosse

  Suki:The Gift of Children

(Photos General) SukiRedHead_138.jpgChildren are a gift. They're the most special kind of gift. They're not the gift certificate type of gift, where you get to go shopping for something you want. They're not a birthday gift, where you get it because the giver thinks you're special. They're not the sort of gift well-meaning mothers-in-law give when they notice that your tablecloths are all really shabby.

Children are the sort of gift we can't ask for. Children are gifts that come to us in good times and bad. They come to us whole or damaged. They come to us perfect or deformed. They come to us with the complexity of their biological parents' genes twisted together. They come to us with the epigenetic memory of our forefathers etched into the fibers of their being. They come to us full of promise and full of mystery. They come to us as wholly imperfect beings. They come to us with brains hungry for learning.

Children are never what we expect them to be. Perhaps they have his nose and your hair, or her way of talking but your way of hugging. But the rest is going to be a mystery. How did she develop that passion? How did he develop that fear? Where did that stubborn will come from? I am perfectly sure I never screamed like that as a child. I can't believe I was ever this smart... Continue>>>

Viva: Goal Setting Part IV: 10 Goal Setting Categories Explained

(Photos General) VivaGravatar.jpgIn Goal Setting Part II I mentioned that if you'd like to set goals for yourself, but haven't found any that you feel inspired to achieve, you can try using goal setting "categories" to generate new ideas.  By using categories, you'll discover goals that reflect the diversity of your ambitions- you'll be reminded that there are many areas in your life where you feel inspired to grow.  And don't forget, goals don't have to be grand, like, "I want to run a marathon."  They can be humble, like, "I want to plant three different varieties of tomato in my garden."  Whether or not your goals are impressive to someone else has no bearing here- you'll know you picked the right goals for yourself if you feel excited to achieve them.

The 10 goal setting categories I set out in Part II deserve a little more explanation so that you can get a clear idea of the different areas you could brainstorm about.  Of course, you may not be interested in some of the categories, and in that case just skip those- there's no point in setting a goal that you don't feel inspired to reach.  Similarly, you may feel inspired to achieve something that doesn't fit into one of the areas listed....   Science Fun with Christine: Is Nuclear Power Good for Us?

(Graphics) CoalPlantArt.jpgAn interesting article was recently published that tried to calculate the deaths attributable to the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. These are separate from the earthquake and tsunami-caused deaths. They came up with 130 extra deaths worldwide, and an extra 180 cancer cases. Due to large uncertainties in the models, the range of estimates is huge.

Because this article was going to be controversial, a response was published alongside the article. The response was interesting. The responder didn't dispute the numbers, but looked at what could have happened if the plants hadn't been built. He assumed these nuclear plants were replaced with coal or gas. He looked at the effects of pollution from these plants on surrounding people, and found that both of these types of plants caused more early deaths than nuclear, even with the accident...Read more >>>>
