(ABC_Feb 2015) Earth-Day-SC_Children.jpgEarth Day this weekend, Summit for the Planet April 25th, Earth Week at Seymour Center April 21-26 and every day!  It's earth day every day in the Santa Cruz County lifestyle where tending to the welfare of our planet is conscientiously practiced and celebrated.

At SC Earth Day there's an activity to intrigue everyone: Live Music ALL DAY, Electric Vehicle Showcase, Recycled Fashion show, Arts and Crafts Booths, Kid Zone with Tons of Activities, Tumbling Gymnastics for Kids, Rock Climbing Wall, Compost Workshops, Solar Powered Event, Valet Bike Parking Provided by People Power, Green Vendor and Environmental Information Booths.

The talk on Simplicity Parenting sponsored by Waldorf School is a "must go" for parents and educators. This promises to be a sellout so if the concept of simplifying family life appeals to you and you would like inspiration on "how", call today for tickets, 425-0519.

Christine cites a study in which " two engineering students have found a way to extinguish fire with sound".  Amazing! Think what this could do for our fire fighting, especially during times of drought!

Simplicity Parenting

Imagine your life... with a sense of ease as you begin to limit distractions and say no to too much, too fast, too soon.

Today's busier, faster, supersized society is waging an undeclared war . . . on childhood.

As the pace of life accelerates to hyperspeed - with too much stuff, too many choices, and too little time - children feel the pressure. They can become anxious, have trouble with friends and school, or even be diagnosed with behavioral problems.  Now, in defense of the extraordinary power of less, internationally renowned family consultant Kim John Payne helps parents reclaim for their children the space and freedom that all kids need, allowing their children's attention to focus and their individuality to flourish.

Based on over twenty years' experience successfully counseling busy families, Simplicity Parenting teaches parents how to worry and hover less-and how to enjoy more. For those who want to slow their children's lives down but don't know where to start, Simplicity Parenting offers both inspiration and a blueprint for change.

Give Simplicity a try!

Simplicity Parenting© by Kim John Payne offers a simple, orderly, and effective pathway to simplify four realms at home, which reduces stress on children and their parents, and allows room for connection, creativity, and relaxation.

These four realms for simplifying are:

Environment: De-cluttering too much stuff at home.

Rhythm: Increasing predictability by introducing rhythmic moments for connection and calm.

Scheduling: Soothing violent schedules brings moments for Being into all the Doing.

Unplugging: Reducing the influence of adult concerns, media and consumerism on children and families to increase resilience, social and emotional intelligence.

Parents who take steps along this pathway to simplify their homes and their schedules, to introduce more predictable rhythms and to filter out concerns which children are not yet able to cope with, find that their children:

  • Are calmer and happier
  • Do better socially and emotionally
  • Are more focused at school
  • Find it easier to comply with family rules
  • Become less picky eaters

These parents also find that they themselves:

  • To have a clearer picture of what they value as parents
  • Are more united with each other in their parenting
  • Have more time and energy for connection, relaxation, and fun

Engineering Program at Soquel High

If you have a junior, sophomore or even freshman ... check it out.

Please mark your calendars and spread the word to all your students and families about an Engineering Night presentation for students and families.

High school and college students curious about studying engineering are invited to attend this free presentation that is open to all students and families, not just those from SHS. Spanish translation will be provided.

The evening begins with a formal presentation by admissions representatives from two university engineering programs. They both have experience with a wide range of engineering institutions, both public and private. Duncan Murdoch, Admissions Director for the Western Region for Olin College of Engineering in Massachusetts, and Marc McGee, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Services at the California State University's Maritime Academy, will discuss differences among university programs as well as the ways students should evaluate engineering programs and prepare for admission and success in the field.

The main presentation will be followed by a panel discussion including local working engineers and representatives from other post-secondary engineering programs such as Cabrillo and UCSC.  Presentation speakers will be available to answer questions after the formal program.

Steve: "Play Ball" Baseball Season Is Upon Us

(ABC_Feb 2015) SteveSpitalny.jpgI was walking past a playing field the other day and there was a 4-year-old boy and his dad, each with baseball gloves, standing near home plate. The dad was explaining how to put on the glove, which hand to put it on and how to get the fingers in the right spots.

Then he explained the process of throwing and catching. "Watch the ball. Then grab it with your glove." He tossed the ball right to the boy, it hit the glove and fell to the ground. "Come on. Grab it when it gets there." The boy stood there. Dad said, "Pick up the ball and throw it to me." The boy gleefully picked up the ball and threw it - the ball seemed to fly randomly out of his hand, not in the direction of his dad.

Next Dad explained the rules of baseball. He explained about the bases, which direction to run if you get a hit, where to stand and bat, etc...about 5 minutes of baseball rules while the boy stood still with the ball in his hand.  Continue to find out Steve's opinion on this scene>>>>>

Stephen Spitalny is a writer, speaker and early childhood consultant. He was a kindergarten teacher at the Santa Cruz Waldorf School for 24 years. His book "Connecting with Young Children: Educating the Will" was published in 2012. Steve now offers workshops, coaching and mentoring in the U.S. and around the world.   Christine: Sound Waves Extinguish Fire

(ABC_Feb 2015) Fire.jpgSound waves are vibrations of air particles. So sound needs something physical in order to be transmitted. It can move through solid materials as well as water. It can't be transmitted across a vacuum since there are no particles to transmit the information.

Past research has shown that fire will respond to sound. Now two engineering students have found a way to extinguish fire with sound.

They built a... Read more>>>>>>

Nine Essential Parenting Tips from a Mom of Five

Martina Frensenius, SeattlesChild

1. Write your own story: It is so easy to get tangled in other people's parenting stories of what could be, or should be, but your story will be your own miracle of little bodies, minds and spirits.

2. Children are great 'employees': In a large family, it is imperative to let go of control of household tasks and put up with a few weeks of 'training'. Before you know it, you'll have kids that can dress themselves, cook, pack lunches and organize their own days.

3. Get a floor robot vacuum: The best game in the world is "Ok kids, let's pick up everything off the floor so we can push the button on the vacuum and sit on the couch and giggle while it cleans". Worth. Every. Penny.

4. Build your community now: Embrace the well-meaning people that ask if they can help. Yes, they can. Invite other people over and let the kids prepare for the playdate by cleaning and preparing snacks, while you and other parents sit and drink coffee.

5. Lower the bar on expectations: Just put the bar on the floor and jump over it. In my world, this means letting dishes pile up and losing shoes in order to get to the playground in time to run laps before school. No one in my house has ever worn matching socks, nor do I. Buy all white socks for everyone so no one will notice -that's great advice from an in-law. Life is colorful and doesn't always match. That is ok.

6. Get out of the house: Welcome the outside environment, the smiles and sometimes annoying comments of strangers. A walk around the block, a stroll through Target (carts there buckle up to 3 kids and let the bigger kid/s push) or a long peaceful drive for car naps.

7. Prioritize childcare and self-care time: Book it in advance and use it. Ask for cash for childcare funds. Get a second mortgage if you need to, factor it in to every holiday gift request. The kids do not need toys more than you and/or a significant other need a few hours out together every week to reconnect. Instead of paying for xyz toy or event, tell the kids they are having a special playdate/soccer lesson/art day etc. with a babysitter.

8. Get superhero t-shirts: Buy them for yourself and wear them in public. And a cape, too, if you are the outgoing type. It takes the edge off the "You must be Supermom" comments. Why, yes, I am. You are, too.

9. Welcome the chaos: And feel the love.
