(0 April 2017) bonsai-200x300.jpgChildren love miniatures --miniature trucks, trains, dolls, furniture, villages, and more! Dioramas are very popular in museums. Perhaps it helps them make sense of the world. I think they will enjoy the bonsai exhibits at MAH this Saturday and Sunday.

Get inspiration for your flower gardens at the Arboretum's Spring Plant Sale where you will find California natives and unique exotic plants.

While it's not yet time to put in tomatoes, it helps to plan ahead. Love Apple Farm's master tomato class is sold out, nevertheless you can access their tomato wisdom by reading their How to Grow Better Tomatoes article. I have had great success following the "recipe" especially using all the surprising ingredients that make your plants thrive and tomatoes taste delicious.

Have a sunny weekend,  Parmalee

  Parks and Storm Damage

(0 April 2017) Wildflowers_WaddellCreek.jpgDespite the damage, wildflowers abound.  Pick your park and venture forth! Photo: Waddell Creek ->

Recent storms have caused extensive damage to Big Basin Redwoods State Park's infrastructure.

Sunset and Alder Trail Camps are CLOSED until further notice due to storm damage.

Many trails are damaged and impassable. Please check with staff at Park Headquarters to see if your planned route is safe and passable. Trail conditions are always changing, so please be aware that you may come across blocked trails that we don't know about. Please be prepared to turn back. We are working to fix these issues as soon as possible. Due to the extensiveness of the damage, repairs might take some time. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Trail Closures & Conditions:

CLOSED:

  • SKYLINE TO THE SEA TRAIL is closed between Middle Ridge Road and Berry Creek Falls Trail
  • SUNSET TRAIL is closed between Middle Ridge Road and Berry Creek Falls Trail
  • The entire TIMMS CREEK TRAIL is closed.
  • The entire BERRY CREEK FALLS TRAIL is CLOSED.

It is possible to hike to Berry Creek Falls from Rancho Del Oso across from Waddell Beach off Highway 1 in Davenport via the Skyline to Sea Trail OR from Big Basin Park Headquarters on the Howard King Trail as out and back hikes. You cannot get beyond Berry Creek Falls on the Berry Creek Falls Trail or Skyline to Sea Trail.

Other trails are OPEN but please keep in mind the following:

  • Recent storms have caused damage to all trails.
  • Washouts, landslides, and downed trees can make sections impassable and make travel on trails slow, difficult and dangerous.
  • Give yourself extra time. Use extreme caution when crossing damaged trail sections or creeks. If in doubt, turn around and go back!
  • Rescue for injured hikers will be delayed and might take many hours. Be prepared to remain overnight.

Volunteer with the Trail Crew
Saturday, April 8 at 9 am
Since 1969 the Big Basin Volunteer Trail Crew has helped make it possible for others to safely enjoy the beauty of our park. The Trail Crew meets the second Saturday of each month, rain or shine. A typical workday lasts until mid-afternoon. Please bring your own work gloves, lunch and water. Join us for a unique perspective of Big Basin, a lively and productive experience with others who share a love of these redwood forests, and the satisfaction of participating in a vital part of the park's ability to educate and inspire the public! Meet at Park Headquarters.

  How to Grow Better Tomatoes

By: Cynthia Sandberg, Love Apple Farms

(0 April 2017) Tomatoesyum.jpg"Tomatoes are the number one edible plant people grow in their yards. Unfortunately, many people think you just plop a plant in the ground and with water it will grow. If you're really lucky, and the planets and stars are in alignment, then this may be true. That unusual occurrence doesn't duplicate itself, because tomatoes will deplete the soil of nutrients pretty quickly. I wouldn't risk just winging it if this is your first year growing, as you can do a lot to ensure you get a fabulous and healthy tomato garden. If you weren't born with a green thumb, however, don't despair. With just a bit of knowledge and perseverance, you can have loads of wonderful tomatoes..." Read Cynthia's Top 10 To Do's >>>>>

How To Extract A Splinter

"A splinter embedded in the hand is often very painful to extract.

"A good way to accomplish this is to fill a wide-mouthed bottle with hot water nearly to the brim, and press affected part of hand tightly against mouth of bottle.

"The suction will pull down the flesh, and steam will soon draw out the splinter."
