  Good Teachers

(Icons/Graphics) Teacherinfluence.jpgI did a mental catalogue of teachers I remember and thought of the varying qualities that caused them to remain in my memory bank. A 4th grade teacher was "strict" -she "made" me master long division. A 5th grade teacher taught sentence diagramming with such clarity that I found it fascinating and fun. A high school teacher of modern European history challenged us and held us to meet reading, analysis and writing standards I had not heretofore encountered. A biology teacher inspired enthusiasm in a dissection class with succinct words of praise, "You have a good eye for detail."

Think of your children's teachers and their best qualities. Then write a simple "Thank you for being so ____ or doing _____ with the children..." etc. Quality praise can make someone's day, re-inspire dedication and sometimes influence a person for life.

Looking for a little parenting support and tuneup? Lydia Snider, local parenting coach, offers a free one hour workshop on "...how to turn the economic downturn into an opportunity to connect with your family in a whole new way. Start having no-cost priceless moments with your family now." It's free at the Educational Resource Center in downtown Santa Cruz, next Wednesday, May 5, 6:30-7:30.

Enjoy the weekend. Find some dancers! Take a hike in our parks or a walk to the tidepools along our beaches.

  Lisa Giulani, Teacher

Lisa is a dynamic, friendly and talented teacher of infants, toddlers and preschoolers at her Family ChildCare Center. Her talents are beyond description, but I'll try: resourceful, mentor, playful, funny, warm, clear, driven, skilled, communicator, responsive, inventive, vibrant, practical, imaginative, and finally, EDUCATOR! Lisa has been my son's teacher for almost three years and I could not have selected a better guide for him, into what's become his love of learning and his love of school. Lisa is a true treasure.

Practical Ideas for Teacher Apreciation Week

(Icons/Graphics) TeacherAppreciationWeek.jpg"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." ~Henry Brooks Adams

Spread some joy.  It will come back! Here are some very simple day-by-day ideas to help make your teachers really feel appreciated.

Monday: Bring a note or card for your teacher thanking them for all their hard work and dedication. This can be from the parent but it's nice to include something from the kids as well.

Tuesday: Bring in a flower.

Wednesday: Bring in something for the classroom: crayons, stickers, colored copy paper, pencils, glue sticks, post-it notes, highlighters, tissue, anti-bacterial wipes, hand gel etc.

Thursday: Sports day - donate a ball, jump rope, hula hoop etc.

Friday: Bring in one of your teachers "favorites". Choose something that relates to their favorite snack or a gift card to their favorite store or hobby. Don't know what their "favorites" are? Don't be shy! Just ask them.

Make this a special week for your teachers and have fun!
