For one week, the vibrant and diverse Santa Cruz dance scene breaks through the boundaries of its studios into the streets pf downtown Santa Cruz. Go downtown this week and you may find yourself surrounded by dancers!
Thursday, April 29, 5:15-9:15pm: Dancing in the Streets, Three Stages, Three Hours, Hundreds of Dancers. 9 Aerial dancers launch off the roof of Lulu Carpenter's downtown, followed by more than 100 dancers from over 20 companies performing in three stages for three hours concluding in a giant fire-dance finale on Pacific Avenue. Three stages offer 15-minute performances by African, Brazilian and Polynesian dancers; tango, salsa and hip-hop; ballet, belly and modern companies and everything in between.
Saturday, May 1, 12:30-5:00pm: Out of the Studio into the Streets, The Teachers Come to you. Take Class on the Street Downtown. Classes in East Coast Swing, Mambo, Brazilian, Tahitian, African and Salsa Rueda, 200 block of Church St. In 13 locations throughout the county, more than 70 classes in ballet, pilates, Zumba, samba, hip-hop, salsa, tango, bellydance, jazz dance and other forms are offered free to first-time participants.
April 30-May 2: Dance in Unlikely Places, Dance when and where you least expect It. Keep an eye out.
Sunday, May 2, 3:30pm: Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre in the Atrium at the MAH 12:00pm Breakdancers at Old School Shoes Downtown Santa Cruz
May 1-May 7 Open Classes, Classes across the county open up free of charge for the week. Check schedule HERE.
May 7, 5:30-9:00pm: Off the Walls, National Dance Week Santa Cruz and First Friday Arts Tour Join Forces. In conjunction with the First Friday Artwalk, dancers will take the art "off the walls" in 10 of the participating galleries, making that monthly tradition even more memorable as bellydancers undulate around the Tannery Art Center and tango takes a backward dip at Artisans Gallery. Flex, a breathtaking modern company, will be at the Mill Gallery.
