  MOD: How to Bee Magnetic!

Jen Mahal, Santa Cruz Children's Museum of Discovery (MOD)

(ABC_Feb 2015) MOD_BeeProject.jpgIt's Spring, a season of flowers and bees. What better time to make a busy bee of your very own! Magnets make the bee in this crafty science toy, inspired by Jon Richard's book The Science Factory, move around its flower. We used mostly recycled materials to create our buzzy bee.Flower

Bees are an essential part of our environment, helping to spread pollen from flower to flower, making the growth of fruits and vegetables possible. You can learn more about bees and even pretend to be one at the Santa Children's Museum of Discovery.

This craft will require the help of an adult and may be very challenging for children under the age of 5. Magnets are not meant for children under the age of 3, as they can be a choking hazard.

  Christine: Let ADHD Boys Wiggle

(ABC_Feb 2015) Christine_ADHD.jpgADHD is one of the most commonly discussed behavioral disorders. Parents especially fear the diagnosis in their children. Treatment is controversial. The numbers of people diagnosed is even controversial as recent studies have shown that girls seem to have the disorder at the same rate as boys but their symptoms are somewhat different. New research seems to show that boys with ADHD can learn as well as so-called "normal" boys - they just learn differently.

A recently published study done by University of Central Florida looked at 52 boys ages 8-12. No girls. (Don't get me started about the dearth of female subjects in research projects.) Twenty-nine of the boys were diagnosed with ADHD and the remainder were not. The kids were shown numbers and letters and then asked to put them in order.

When boys with ADHD were allowed to wiggle or move they performed as well as normal boys who didn't wiggle. When normal boys moved around they performed as poorly as ADHD boys who weren't allowed to wiggle. So boys with ADHD needed the movement as part of engaging their mental higher functions - like memory.

We (of course) don't know if this also works with girls who have ADHD.

If this study is proven to be reliable by other researchers - it poses a problem...Continued>>>>>>
