  Earth Day Is Every Day!

(0 A 0 April 2019) EarthDayLogo2019.jpgEarth Day Santa Cruz is every day for those of us who walk the beaches and woods, bringing out both our own and others' trash, create gardens for our precious bees, try to reduce our plastic use, etc., but Saturday we set aside the entire day to learn more and do more about the earth!

Santa Cruz Earth Day, a fun celebration of the environment and the San Lorenzo River for all age groups, is presented by the City of Santa Cruz, the County of Santa Cruz, Ecology Action and the Coastal Watershed Council. The festival will be held at San Lorenzo Park Benchlands behind the County Government Center. In case of rain, the event will be held in the County Government Center parking lot.

Earth Day  will feature over 90 educational and green retail booths, many kids' activities, an electric vehicle showcase, live music, delicious food, a beer garden and much more.

(0 A 0 April 2019) CountryBunny.jpgThe Kids' Zone will feature an arts and crafts activity area, face painting and tumbling/gymnastics. A free rock climbing wall is open to all ages. Students from four local schools will display their Environmental Classroom Challenge projects with winners announced onstage at noon.

Happy Easter to all! Be sure to read this inspiring classic to your children! It's a story of adventure, bravery, following dreams, good character and how to bring up children.

Please share our newsletter with new friends so they won't miss a few tidbits of wisdom from our author contributors, and as always our many fun events!

Have a great weekend on this earth with family and friends!  Parmalee

  Easter Egg "Recipes"

(0 A 0 April 2019) onionskineastereggs.jpgOnion Skin Easter Eggs

Dye Easter eggs in onion skins, and yes the dye is golden yellow (for brown onions), but not in a uniform color when the skins are wrapped around the egg and put in a gauze cloth tied with string and then boiled in water with a little vinegar or salt added (it allows the dye to hold). What you get is a gorgeous veiny gold with a bit of green (sometimes) - just too exquisite for words. This is a technique my Russian mother taught me as a child. I do this every year and give the eggs away on Easter Sunday.

(0 A 0 April 2019) shaving-cream-easter-eggs-.jpgShaving Cream Easter Eggs

  • Start with 6-12 hard-boiled eggs. Dry completely.Spray shaving cream (the foam sort, not the gel) into a muffin tin.
  • Place several drops of food coloring into each cup. Swirl with a toothpick.
  • Gently set eggs in the cups, swirling several times, until completely coated.
  • Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove eggs and rinse with cold water.
  • Enjoy your decorative crafts!

  Almost time for Summer Reading!

(0 A 0 April 2019) Library_XummerReading.jpg2019 - A Universe of Stories

SCPL staff has many exciting programs planned for all ages. There will be special events with very special performers at all our branches, prizes, and lots of reading.

We are definitely emphasizing literacy and accessibility this summer. We will ask all participants to count the number of books they read from June 1 - mid August.

Readers will receive books as prizes (no more Book Bucks), be eligible for drawings for prizes donated by Santa Cruz County Merchants who support literacy, and they will be able to keep track of their reading online with our new program called Beanstack.

Sign-ups go live on June 1. Bookmark Kids Page.

(0 A 0 April 2019) Moonjar.jpg

This durable retro-tin Moonjar Moneybox features three moneyboxes marked save, spend, and share.

This division is an excellent way to teach children about the benefits of saving money for a special purpose versus spending it immediately.

It also provides an easy way to make charitable giving a part of your child's life.

Along with the three-part moneybox, the set comes with a family guide and a passbook to track transactions. Highly recommended for ages 3 and up.

There are other products like the Moonjar. Check here!
